The demining group were ready to start work at 08:40 but bad weather prevented work until 11:30 when the teams deployed. The two victims left the rest area but "no witness was able to provide a clear indication of the[ir] intentions". It was thought likely that they had gone to carry out a reconnaissance of the area where new grids would be made for the dog runs. They appear to have walked directly to the accident site, stepped deliberately over the edge of lane markings and initiated the mine. Neither victim was wearing protective clothing.

Comparative Demography Of The High-Altitude Lizard, Sceloporus Grammicus (Phrynosomatidae), On The Iztaccihuatl Volcano, Puebla, México, Julio A. Lemos-Espinal, Royce E. Ballinger, Geoffrey R. Smith Oct 1998

Comparative Demography Of The High-Altitude Lizard, Sceloporus Grammicus (Phrynosomatidae), On The Iztaccihuatl Volcano, Puebla, México, Julio A. Lemos-Espinal, Royce E. Ballinger, Geoffrey R. Smith

Great Basin Naturalist

Population density, reproduction, and survivorship were compared between 2 populations of Sceloporus grammicus occurring at different altitudes (3700 m and 4400 m) on the eastern slopes of Iztaccihuatl Volcano, Puebla, México. Lizards in both populations matured at the same age (14–15 mon) and size (39–42 mm SLV). Population density was slightly greater at high altitude (131–163 per ha) than at low altitude (52–83 per ha). Survivorship and Ro were higher at the low-altitude area, but in general there were no significant demographic variations between altitudes that have been reported in lizard population at higher latitudes. Studies of lower-elevation populations …

Apostatic Selection By Blue Jays Produces Balanced Polymorphism In Virtual Prey, Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil Oct 1998

Apostatic Selection By Blue Jays Produces Balanced Polymorphism In Virtual Prey, Alan B. Bond, Alan Kamil

Papers in Behavior in Biological Sciences

Apostatic selection, in which predators overlook rare prey types while consuming an excess of abundant ones, has been assumed to contribute to the maintenance of prey polymorphisms. Such an effect requires predators to respond to changes in the relative abundance of prey, switching to alternatives when a focal prey type becomes less common. Apostatic selection has often been investigated using fixed relative proportions of prey, but its effects on predator–prey dynamics have been difficult to demonstrate. Here we report results from a new technique that incorporates computer-generated displays into an established experimental system, that of blue jays (Cyanocitta cristata …
