How Nature Shapes Childhood, Will Nixon
How Nature Shapes Childhood, Will Nixon
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
Pyle 's intuitions have been borne out by psychological study. In Place Attachment, a collection of academic essays, Kentucky State University professor of psychology Louise Chawla writes that formal studies of environmental activists have found that "most respondents attributed their commitment to a combination of two sources: many hours spent outdoors in a keenly remembered wild or semi-wild place in childhood or adolescence, and an adult who taught respect for nature." In public interviews, environmental leaders may ascribe their motivations to such weighty matters as saving the planet for future generations, but at bottom they may owe their drive to …

Biodegradation Of Atrazine By Agrobacterium Radiobacter J14a And Use Of This Strain In Bioremediation Of Contaminated Soil, J. K. Struthers, K. Jayachandran, T. B. Moorman
United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
We examined the ability of a soil bacterium, Agrobacterium radiobacter J14a, to degrade the herbicide atrazine under a variety of cultural conditions, and we used this bacterium to increase the biodegradation of atrazine in soils from agricultural chemical distribution sites. J14a cells grown in nitrogen-free medium with citrate and sucrose as carbon sources mineralized 94% of 50 μg of [14C-U-ring]atrazine ml-1 in 72 h with a concurrent increase in the population size from 7.9 x 105 to 5.0 x 107 cells ml-1. Under these conditions cells mineralized the [ethyl-14C]atrazine …

Trends. Functional Versus Ideological Environmentalism: Implications For Physical And Psychological Security, Ibpp Editor
International Bulletin of Political Psychology
The author discusses how ideological environmentalists embrace the notion that nature is pristine and benign. All must be, continue to be, and modified to be as it would be without human intervention. Supporting belief systems are problematic.
