Isaiah In The Book Of Mormon, Donald W. Parry, John W. Welch

Maxwell Institute Publications

The essays in this book, written by some of the finest LDS scholars, take a variety of approaches to help readers make the most of the Isaiah passages in the Book of Mormon. These scholars use the prophets of the Book of Mormon as knowledgeable guides, examining how and why those ancient writers used and interpreted Isaiah in order to clarify for modern readers what the Isaiah sections in the Book of Mormon are all about.

Building The Imagined Community: Dominican Exempla And Theological Knowledge, Andrea L. Winkler Jan 1998

Building The Imagined Community: Dominican Exempla And Theological Knowledge, Andrea L. Winkler

Quidditas

During the thirteenth century, preachers considered sermons to be among the most important methods of communicating written material to the unlettered. Within a sermon, the use of exempla—short stories used to illustrate a moral point—was a primary means of disseminating theological information, and throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the number of exempla compilations intended as preaching aids increased markedly. Exempla collectors such as Caesarius of Heisterbach and Stephen of Bourbon shared and re-used stories to disseminate theological knowledge. Despite the communal nature of exempla, individual stories were more than unidirectional theological transmissions or stock tales repeated with …

John Skelton's "Agenst Garnesche": Poetic Territorialism, At The Court Of Henry Viii, Victor I. Scherb Jan 1998

John Skelton's "Agenst Garnesche": Poetic Territorialism, At The Court Of Henry Viii, Victor I. Scherb

Quidditas

John Skelton's 1514 flyting "Agenst Garnesche" has been subject to little critical scrutiny. This neglect can perhaps be attributed to the fact that Christopher Garnesche's contribution is missing, but it is also characteristic of the relative neglect accorded to the flyting as a genre, a neglect that has also colored the interpretation of many of Skelton's more abusive poems. One critic, for example, has dismissed the poem as being "nothing but personal abuse of a particularly virulent type . . . adorned with a singular collection of epithets and incomprehensible allusions, which serve only to befog and irritate the reader." …

Objects Of Desire: Reading The Material World Metaphysically In Marguerite De Navarre's Heptaméron, Catharine Randall

Quidditas

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,

where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,

where moth and rust do not destroy,

and where thieves do not break in and steal.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

(Matthew 6:19-21)

FOCUS on Boise State

Gone is the simple one-room schoolhouse where the teacher cut the wood, built the fire and taught the students- all of whom likely came from similar backgrounds. Today's classrooms are filled with children from varied cultures and with different learning abilities. Schools are guiding students in skills once reserved strictly for parents. This issue of FOCUS illuminates the challenges facing educators and the progress they are making to meet these increasing demands. Chuck Scheer cover photo.

Indexed Stems And Russian Word Formation: A Network Morphology Account Of Russian Personal Nouns, Andrew R. Hippisley Jan 1998

Indexed Stems And Russian Word Formation: A Network Morphology Account Of Russian Personal Nouns, Andrew R. Hippisley

Linguistics Faculty Publications

Recent lexeme-based models have proposed that a lexeme carries an inventory of stems on which morphological rules operate. The various stems in the inventory are associated with different morphological rules, of both inflection and derivation. Furthermore, one stem may be selected by more than one rule. For this reason stems in the inventory are labeled with indexes, rather than being directly associated with a particular morphological function. It is claimed that an indexed-stem approach captures generalizations in the morphological system that would otherwise be missed. We argue that such an approach provides for greater generalization in the Russian morphological system. …

It is generally accepted that the present-day Slovak standard language was codified in its basic form in the mid 19th century by the Slovak scholar Ľudovít Štúr. A similar, but unsuccessful, attempt to create a standard Slovak language was made by Anton Bernolák in the late 18th century. There is not general agreement, however, on the degree or type of standardization, or better, normalization, exhibited by Slovak texts in the pre-codification period (15th-18th centuries). The present study outlines a new methodological framework for the investigation of the issue of standard language development in early pre-codification Slovak texts, providing selected phonological …

Summary Adjudication In United States Civil Procedure, Mary J. Davis Jan 1998

Summary Adjudication In United States Civil Procedure, Mary J. Davis

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

This article uses one of the high profile mass tort cases of recent decades, the complex silicone gel-filled breast implant products liability litigation, to evaluate summary adjudication measures. Recognizing that not all claims filed are complex tort claims (just the most interesting ones), where commercial claims present the opportunity for use of summary proceedings, those will be discussed as well, particularly regarding mechanisms by which security for a creditor-plaintiffs claim can be obtained prior to a favorable verdict.

While preparing this Report, it became clear that the author has a particular view of what constitutes a "summary adjudication" procedure, but …

Architectural Power Estimation Based On Behavior Level Profiling, Srinivas Katkoori, Ranga Vemuri Jan 1998

Architectural Power Estimation Based On Behavior Level Profiling, Srinivas Katkoori, Ranga Vemuri

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

High level synthesis is the process of generating register transfer (RT) level designs from behavioral specifications. High level synthesis systems have traditionally taken into account such constraints as area, clock period and throughput time. Many high level synthesis systems [1] permit generation of many alternative RT level designs meeting these constraints in a relatively short time. If it is possible to accurately estimate the power consumption of RT level designs, then a low power design from among these alternatives can be selected. In this paper, we present an accurate power estimation technique for register transfer level designs generated by high level …
