Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Doubly differential cross sections d2σ / dν ‖ dν⊥ have been obtained by mapping the 3-dimensional velocity space of ultralow- and low-energy electrons \ (1.5 meV < = Ee < = 100 eV \) emitted in singly ionizing 3.6 MeV / u Au53+ on helium collisions. A sharp \ ( ΔEFWHMe⊥< = 22 meV \) asymmetric peak centered at = 0 is observed to emerge at ultralow energies from the strongly forward shifted low-energy electron velocity distribution. The shape of this "target cusp," which is very sensitive on the details of the two-center potential, is in excellent accord with theoretical predictions. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Two Steps Forward, Three Steps Back: The Stormy History Of Reading Comprehension Assessment, Loukia K. Sarroub, P. David Pearson Nov 1998

Two Steps Forward, Three Steps Back: The Stormy History Of Reading Comprehension Assessment, Loukia K. Sarroub, P. David Pearson

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

After closely examining the recent history of reading comprehension assessment in the United States, we have concluded that although both the forms of assessment and the key players in the assessment process have changed in significant ways, the functions of assessment have remained relatively constant. In terms of function, we have always used, and continue to use, assessment tools to evaluate programs, to hold particular groups accountable for some specified set of outcomes (though it may seem that that is all we do these days), to inform instruction, either for individuals or whole classes, and finally, to determine who gains …

Challenges To Social Interactions As Perceived By Young High Ability Adults With Learning Disabilities: A Qualitative Research Design, Dana Hathcock

Special Education ETDs

This qualitative study was designed to analyze the perceptions of adults with learning disabilities concerning social competence issues. The questions in the research were posed to participants to elicit examples of the challenges experienced as a child and as an adult; examples of the coping skills utilized; examples of circumstances which helped to alleviate the challenges; perceptions regarding the educational system and people/situations in general as factors in performance; and successful outcomes as well as possible reasons for those outcomes. Five female and five male individuals ranging in age from 25-40, having been identified with learning disabilities, participated in this …

Innovation In The Writing Center: A Diffusion Study, Talisman Kate Benton Saunders Nov 1998

Innovation In The Writing Center: A Diffusion Study, Talisman Kate Benton Saunders

Dissertations and Theses

An innovation is an idea, object, or practice that is perceived by a certain group as being new. To study the process by which an innovation is introduced to a certain target group and the results of the effort to convince the group to adopt the innovation is to study the diffusion of that innovation. This often involves examination of the social events and communication patterns among and between the stakeholders, change agents, and target group(s). The diffusion model is relevant and useful to many disciplines. It has many practical uses and applications for policymakers in that it offers the …

Student Satisfaction With The Process Of Transferring To The University Of North Dakota., Mary E. Dalglish Bergstrom

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine issues related to the level of satisfaction with selected aspects of the transfer process of the students who had transferred to the University of North Dakota (UND). Research questions addressed several issues including the difficulty experienced in transferring to UND in regard to admission, advisement, and/or acceptance of transfer credit; the respondents' perceptions of the accuracy and understandability of information provided by UND; the ways in which students were satisfied or dissatisfied with the transfer admission process; and the respondents' suggestions for improvements to the transfer admission process.Data were gathered using a …
