Tocqueville's Civic Republicanism: The Balance Between Equality And Liberty In American Democracy, Clifford Brantley Smith Jul 1998

Tocqueville's Civic Republicanism: The Balance Between Equality And Liberty In American Democracy, Clifford Brantley Smith

Dissertations and Theses

At the heart of America's experience with liberal democratic institutions remains the continuous struggle between liberty and equality. The two are opposed, but form the dual foundation upon which American democracy rests. One foundation emphasized the importance of equal political rights and equality of opportunity. This theme considers the prospects of a person are not predetermined at birth, as in an aristocratic country, but instead are left to be filled by the decisions made through life. Yet for people to have the greatest options available as they steer their way through life, there must also exist the second foundation of …

Revolutionary Trickster Communities: Re-Presenting Folk Heroes In Contemporary African American Novels, Susan C. Stinson Jul 1998

Revolutionary Trickster Communities: Re-Presenting Folk Heroes In Contemporary African American Novels, Susan C. Stinson

Theses & Honors Papers

In this thesis, the three novelists, as tricksters, manipulate one’s reading process by overlapping the visible with the invisible world. This thesis explores the tricksters communities and will focus on the novelists as trickster. Sherley Anne Williams, Ernest Gaines, and Gloria Naylor parody the rebel or loner trickster tradition in literature and conceptualize a world in which African Americans, white Americans, and Native Americans work communally to deconstruct the stereotypes associated with race, age, and gender. The authors use parody as a humorous narrative technique. The humor enables the modern reader to look into the past at the wrongs imposed …

The Effects Of Literature Circles On The Reading Attitudes Of Fourth Grade Students, Kellyann Roche Jul 1998

The Effects Of Literature Circles On The Reading Attitudes Of Fourth Grade Students, Kellyann Roche

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that literature circles had on the reading attitudes of fourth grade students. This study used a pretest-posttest control group design to look at the reading attitudes of fourth grade students before and after the implementation of literature circles.
