Optimal Discrete-Time Control For Non-Linear Cascade Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, W. M. Haddad, J. L. Fausz, V. Chellaboina
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper we develop an optimality-based framework for designing controllers for discrete-time nonlinear cascade systems. Specifically, using a nonlinear-nonquadratic optimal control framework we develop a family of globally stabilizing backstepping-type controllers parameterized by the cost functional that is minimized. Furthermore, it is shown that the control Lyapunov function guaranteeing closed-loop stability is a solution to the steady-state Bellman equation for the controlled system and thus guarantees both optimality and stability.
An Exploration Of The Roles, Responsibilities, And Challenges Of Six Graduate Teaching Assistants In The Visual Arts, Karen Drummond Devers
An Exploration Of The Roles, Responsibilities, And Challenges Of Six Graduate Teaching Assistants In The Visual Arts, Karen Drummond Devers
Theses and Dissertations
In this qualitative study, six participants shared their experiences as graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) in the Visual Arts department of an upper- midwest university. Interviews, observations, and field notes during one semester, provided insights into how the participants described and understood their roles and < )sponsibilities as teachers. The university in this study offered no formal training and limited support to the graduate teaching assistants. As a result, participants had to depend on their own ingenuity and judgement to determine what and how to teach. The GTAs had full responsibility for crafting their course syllabi, creating and grading assignments, and resolving difficulties which arose in their classrooms. If they wanted feedback or suggestions, it was up to them to seek out responsive faculty members as mentors. The issues of student absenteeism and non-compliant behaviors were particularly difficult for the participants to resolve. The lack of preparation and support which was offered the GTAs contributed to their sense of isolation and precluded the formation of a teaching and learning community within the department.

Enantiomeric Separation Of Unusual Secondary Aromatic Amino Acids, A. Péter, G. Török, G. Tóth, W. Van Den Nest, G. Laus, D. Tourwé, Daniel W. Armstrong
Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works
High-performance liquid chromatographic and gas chromatographic methods were developed for the separation of unusual secondary aromatic amino acids. Amino acids containing 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronorharmane-1-carboxylic acid and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-3-carboxy-2-carboline moieties were synthetized in racemic or chiral forms. The high-performance liquid chromatography was carried out either on a teicoplanin-containing chiral stationary phase or on an achiral C18 column. In the latter case the diastereomers of the amino acids formed by precolumn derivatization with the chiral reagents 2,3,3,6-tetra-O-acetyl-β-D-glucopyranosyl isothiocyanate or 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrophenyl-5-L-alanine amide were separated. The gas chromatographic analyses were based on separation on a Chirasil-L-Val column.

Disorder-Induced Topological Defects In A D=2 Elastic Medium At Zero Temperature, Alan Middleton
Disorder-Induced Topological Defects In A D=2 Elastic Medium At Zero Temperature, Alan Middleton
Physics - All Scholarship
The density and correlations of topological defects are investigated numerically in a model of a d=2 elastic medium subject to a periodic quenched random potential. The computed density of defects decreases approximately exponentially with the defect core energy. Comparing the defect-free ground state with the ground state with defects, it is found that the difference is described by string-like excitations, bounded by defect pairs, which have a fractal dimension of 1.250(3). At zero temperature, the disorder-induced defects screen the interaction of introduced vortex pairs.

Milt Lindholm was born June 3, 1911 in Collinsville Connecticut to Helen (Hess) and Rev. Lambert Lindholm. His father, a Swedish Congregational minister, died when Milton was one year old. Lindholm’s mother moved her family to Waltham, Massachusetts, to live with her parents, and work at the Waltham Watch Factory. After graduating from Waltham High School, Lindholm worked for two years, and then went to Bates College in the Class of 1935. At Bates, he was on the football team, playing in a scoreless tie with Yale University. He was also part of the Student Council, Athletic Council, basketball team, …
Influence Of Ash Deposit Chemistry And Structure On Physical And Transport Properties, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091
Influence Of Ash Deposit Chemistry And Structure On Physical And Transport Properties, Larry Lin Baxter 8507091
Faculty Publications
Boiler ash deposits generated during combustion of coal, biomass, black liquor, and energetic materials affect both the net plant efficiency and operating strategy of essentially all boilers. Such deposits decrease convective and radiative heat exchange with boiler heat transfer surfaces. In many cases, even a small amount of ash on a surface decreases local heat transfer rates by factors of three or more. Apart from their impact on heat transfer, ash deposits in boilers represent potential operational problems and boiler maintenance issues, including plugging, tube wastage (erosion and corrosion), and structural damage. This report relates the chemistry and microstructural properties …
