Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of trigger point injection (TPI) and combined treatment on an active myofascial trigger point (MrP).Design: A controlled clinical trial Setting: Our study was performed in a rehabilitation outpatient clinic. Participants: One hundred and sixty-two patients with active MrPs in the upper trapezius were investigated over a two year period, from 1995 to 1996. Forty-six healthy adults were included as the control group. Control study: The healthy subjects were assigned into three different groups which included healthy subjects without treatment (control group), patients without treatment (patient group) and patients accepting …

Clinical Trial Of A Low-Temperature Plastic Anterior Ankle Foot Orthosis For Children With Habitual Toe Walking, May-Kuen Wong, Chin-Man Wang, Fuk-Tan Tang, Choon-Khim Chong Sep 1998

Clinical Trial Of A Low-Temperature Plastic Anterior Ankle Foot Orthosis For Children With Habitual Toe Walking, May-Kuen Wong, Chin-Man Wang, Fuk-Tan Tang, Choon-Khim Chong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Six children with idiopathic (habitual) toe walking were fitted with a new type of plastic anterior ankle foot orthosis made from a low-temperature thermoplast. The age of the children ranged from 2 to 6 years and none had an associated neuromuscular disorder. The splint could be taken off and put on at will. The child wore it for a duration of 5 to 8 hours daily for a period of 3 to 8 weeks. At the end of treatment, all children had improved their range of dorsiflexion by at least 20 degrees. No recurrence was found at one to two …

Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia-Clinical Analysis And Experience Of Rehabilitation:A Casereport, Pong-Yuen Wong, Yun-Chyi Wang, Pin-Tang Ko, Yi-Lung Sun, Fuk-Tan Tang, May-Kuen Wong Sep 1998

Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia-Clinical Analysis And Experience Of Rehabilitation:A Casereport, Pong-Yuen Wong, Yun-Chyi Wang, Pin-Tang Ko, Yi-Lung Sun, Fuk-Tan Tang, May-Kuen Wong

Rehabilitation Practice and Science

Hereditary spastic paraplegia (HSP) is a rare degenerative disorder of the central nervous system. The mode of inheritance may be autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive, or X-linked. Clinical features include a normal perinatal and birth history, slow progressive spasticity of the bilateral lower limbs, hyperreflexia, increased extensor plantar responses, and positive knee and ankle clonus resulting in walking difficulty and an abnormal gait. Rehabilitation training for hereditary spastic paraplegia has seldom been discussed. We present a case of HSP who received physical and occupational therapies.A 12-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital on July 23, 1995 due to insidious onset …

Magma Traps And Driving Pressure: Consequences For Pluton Shape And Emplacement In An Extensional Regime, John Patrick Hogan, Jonathan D. Price, M. Charles Gilbert Sep 1998

Magma Traps And Driving Pressure: Consequences For Pluton Shape And Emplacement In An Extensional Regime, John Patrick Hogan, Jonathan D. Price, M. Charles Gilbert

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The level of emplacement and final form of felsic and mafic igneous rocks of the Wichita Mountains Igneous Province, southwestern Oklahoma, U.S.A. Are discussed in light of magma driving pressure, lithostatic load, and crustal magma traps. Deposition of voluminous A-type rhyolites upon an eroded gabbroic substrate formed a subhorizontal strength anisotropy that acted as a crustal magma trap for subsequent rising felsic and mafic magma. Intruded along this crustal magma trap are the A-type sheet granites (length/thickness 100:1) of the Wichita Granite Group, of which the Mount Scott Granite sheet is typical, and smaller plutons of biotite bearing Roosevelt Gabbro. …

Making A Difference In The Evolving Electronic Scholarly Publishing Economy, Johann Van Reenen

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

No library or information service can stand aloof from the current developments (legal, technological, and organizational) in scholarly publishing. I will be describing my personal actions to influence beneficial change, as well as those of the various groups I am involved with. This may be useful to chapter members and, I hope, stimulate more ideas for effecting changes in the electronic publishing environment before it, too, is usurped by for-profit publishers.

Low-Field Hopping Among Randomly-Distributed Sites With Uncorrelated Energetic Disorder, Paul Ernest Parris Sep 1998

Low-Field Hopping Among Randomly-Distributed Sites With Uncorrelated Energetic Disorder, Paul Ernest Parris

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The low-field mobility μ of a small concentration of charge carriers hopping among a random distribution of transport sites is studied, as a function of the mean interparticle spacing ρ and the temperature T, for model systems having different site-energy distribution functions. For a uniform density of states our calculations show that the mobility obeys empirical scaling laws similar to those found in the theory of variable-range hopping. For a binary distribution of site energies we observe a crossover as a function of site density between trap-limited conduction and trap-mediated conduction. For a Gaussian density of states our results confirm …

Development Of An Indigenous Screening Instrument In Pakistan: The Aga Khan University Anxiety And Depression Scale, B S. Ali, H Reza, M M. Khan, I Jehan Sep 1998

Development Of An Indigenous Screening Instrument In Pakistan: The Aga Khan University Anxiety And Depression Scale, B S. Ali, H Reza, M M. Khan, I Jehan

Community Health Sciences

The use of translations of instruments for detecting anxiety and depression continues to be debated. An indigenous screening instrument has been developed in Urdu for anxiety-depression syndromes at the Aga Khan University. It has been developed from the complaints of 150 anxious and depressed patients presenting to a non-speciality clinic and has been validated in 53 patients in a psychiatry clinic. The questionnaire has 25 items, 13 psychlogical and 12 somatic. At a score of 20 it has a sensitivity of 66%, a specificity of 79%, a positive predictive value of 83 and a negative predictive value of 60. In …

Protein Fragmentation Due To Slow Highly Charged Ion Impact, Christiane Ruehlicke, Dieter Schneider, Markus Schneider, Robert D. Dubois, Rod Balhorn Sep 1998

Protein Fragmentation Due To Slow Highly Charged Ion Impact, Christiane Ruehlicke, Dieter Schneider, Markus Schneider, Robert D. Dubois, Rod Balhorn

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We present first results of experiments on the fragmentation of biomolecules using highly charged heavy ions. Fragmentation and modification of oligopeptides, such as dimerization and attachment of ionic salt components, have been observed by means of mass spectrometry. Plasmid DNA molecules were imaged with an atomic force microscope after ion irradiation and profound molecular damage was found.

Productivity Growth And Public Sector Employment, Kong Weng Ho, Hian Teck Hoon Sep 1998

Productivity Growth And Public Sector Employment, Kong Weng Ho, Hian Teck Hoon

Research Collection School Of Economics

Our model endogenizes the share of public sector employment in a neoclassical growth model. Under the assumptions that public sector production is labor intensive and the elasticity of substitution between capital and labor is less than one, the public share of employment is shown to decline with a rise in capital per effective worker. Our theory predicts that periods of high productivity growth are associated with a rising trend of the public share of employment. This prediction conforms well with U.S. experience from 1950-1995.
