The Quiet Revolution In Catholic Schooling In Australia, Kelvin Canavan Sep 1998

The Quiet Revolution In Catholic Schooling In Australia, Kelvin Canavan

Journal of Catholic Education

In the public policy discourse about vouchers, many Catholic school advocates have been aligned with the new conservative critics of public schools. A review of the Dayton, Ohio, area Catholic schools reveals that need-based student subsidies, which are a variation on vouchers, might reverse the declining urban enrollment in Catholic schools and continue their tradition of educating poor and disadvantaged students. This brief overview of changes in Catholic schooling in Australia over the past 30 years identifies four key factors””the smooth transition from religious to lay staff, the reintroduction of government financial assistance, the development of strong Catholic Education offices, …

Shakeoff Measurement Of The L = 3 States Of Barium, Heider N. Ereifej, J. Greg Story Sep 1998

Shakeoff Measurement Of The L = 3 States Of Barium, Heider N. Ereifej, J. Greg Story

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Isolated core excitation was used to produce low-energy continuum electrons in the l = 3 angular momentum state of barium. Data were taken over a region of energy that coincided with the energy of the 6p3/2nf doubly excited states. Analysis of the data using multichannel quantum defect theory allowed the measurement of the widths of the 6p3/2nf states and the energy-dependent phase of the continuum electronic wave functions due to interaction with the doubly excited states. The phase of the continuum electrons is shown to vary continuously with energy, due to the anomalously broad widths of …

Establishing Norms For A Mexican Group Using Ricketts, Steiner And Arnett Analyses, Mauricio Gonzalez Balut Sep 1998

Establishing Norms For A Mexican Group Using Ricketts, Steiner And Arnett Analyses, Mauricio Gonzalez Balut

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Most existing cephalometric analyses are based on norms for the Caucasian population. Therefore, they cannot be properly applied for Mexican or Hispanic patients. Ethnic variations in the normal positions of the maxilla and mandible influence and alter the diagnosis and treatment plan for each of the different type of malocclusions. Previous studies have addressed the difference between the Caucasian norms and the Hispanic norms, this indicates the variety of their skeletal, dental and facial features.

It is the purpose of this study to establish specific cephalometric standards for the native Mexican group, using the Steiner and Ricketts analyses along with …

The Effects Of Exposure To Extremely Low-Amplitude, Low-Frequency Electric Fields On Skeletal Tissue, In Vitro, Robert James Fitzsimmons Sep 1998

The Effects Of Exposure To Extremely Low-Amplitude, Low-Frequency Electric Fields On Skeletal Tissue, In Vitro, Robert James Fitzsimmons

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In vivo experiments have demonstrated (a) that transient electrical potentials are induced in impact-loaded bone, and (b) that bone formation is increased in response to electrical stimulation. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that, in response to mechanical loading, mechanical energy in bone is transduced into biologically relevant electrical energy. In order to study the mechanism through which electric fields may increase bone formation, a model system was developed were bone cells or bone organ cultures were exposed to a capacitively-coupled electric field of low frequency (8-25 Hz) and extremely low amplitude (estimated 10-7 V/cm in the culture medium) for …

Regulation Of Connexin43 By Phosphorylation In Heart Development, John C. Duncan Sep 1998

Regulation Of Connexin43 By Phosphorylation In Heart Development, John C. Duncan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Serine/threonine protein kinases have been shown to reversibly regulate cell-cell communication through gap junctions formed by connexin 43 (Cx43) (Godwin et al.7 1993). The Cx43 protein expression levels are unclear and what role phosphorylation plays in the regulation of signal transduction through these gap junctions during heart formation. Reportedly, mutations which replace potentially phosphorylatable serines within the Cx43 protein are associated with heart malformations (Britz-Cunningham et al.. 1995), highlighting the importance of determining the levels of Cx43 and the activities of PKA and PKC during heart development.

Western analysis performed on hearts from developmentally significant time points revealed principally high …

The Relationship Of The Incisive Canal To Maxillary Median Diastema, Jeffery S. Corbett Sep 1998

The Relationship Of The Incisive Canal To Maxillary Median Diastema, Jeffery S. Corbett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between the incisive canal and maxillary median diastema, and to identify an imaging method capable of documenting the geometry and dimensions of the incisive canal. The sample consisted of 59 dry skulls, 26 of which had a maxillary median diastema ranging in size from 0.1 mm to 2.8 mm (mean 1.0 mm, SD = 0.7 mm). Each skull had all of the permanent maxillary teeth present from first molar to first molar and lacked any apparent non-orthodontic condition that could have caused the diastema. Diastema width and canal diameter were …

Finance Applications Of Game Theory, Franklin Allen, Stephen Morris Sep 1998

Finance Applications Of Game Theory, Franklin Allen, Stephen Morris

Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers

Traditional finance theory based on the assumptions of symmetric information and perfect and competitive markets has provided many important insights. These include the Modigliani and Miller Theorems, the CAPM, the Efficient Markets Hypothesis and continuous time finance. However, many empirical phenomena are difficult to reconcile with this traditional framework. Game theoretic techniques have allowed insights into a number of these. Many puzzles remain. This paper argues that recent advances in game theory concerned with higher order beliefs, informational cascades and heterogeneous prior beliefs have the potential to provide insights into some of these remaining puzzles.

Developing The Corridor Management Plan, Margaret A. Marshall, Kristine M. Williams Sep 1998

Developing The Corridor Management Plan, Margaret A. Marshall, Kristine M. Williams

CUTR Research Reports

Corridor planning is a mechanism used by many states, to strengthen the link between transportation and land use planning. There is a pressing need for local governments and states to coordinate land use planning within and along designated future transportation corridors, to promote orderly growth and maintain the integrity of the corridor for transportation purposes. This paper presents a suggested approach for developing a corri4or management plan, based upon a review of the literature and case examples of best practices in corridor (access) management planning.

Assessing The Impact Of The Shortage Of Aviation Maintenance Technicians On Air Transportation, Blaise P. Waguespack Jr., Aleksandar Savic Jr., James S. Baker Sep 1998

Assessing The Impact Of The Shortage Of Aviation Maintenance Technicians On Air Transportation, Blaise P. Waguespack Jr., Aleksandar Savic Jr., James S. Baker

Journal of Transportation Management

Global aviation activity is poised for a decade of sustained growth. While economic difficulties are a fact of life in the aviation transportation industry, the future demand for aviation transportation services is promising. One factor that may greatly dampen this projected growth may be the lack of qualified aviation maintenance technicians (AMTs) necessary to keep the air transport fleet flying. This investigation examines the future of global aviation activity while presenting factors impacting the corresponding lack of growth in the AMT population that threaten the future of air transportation.
