Wide-Area Incident Management System On The Internet, Kaan Ozbay, Pushkin Kachroo Oct 1998

Wide-Area Incident Management System On The Internet, Kaan Ozbay, Pushkin Kachroo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

The incident management process consists of four sequential steps-incident detection, response, clearance and recovery. Each of these components comprises of a number of operations and coordinated decision-making between the agencies involved. The provision of computer based support tools for the personnel involved will help develop appropriate strategies and increase efficiency and expediency. Existing systems are developed on various traditional computing platforms. However, with the advent of World Wide Web and Internet based programming tools such as Java, it is now possible to develop platform independent decision support tools for the incident management agencies. Gender Types, Self-Esteem, And Academic Achievement In Middle School Students, Kimberly D. Noll

Student Work

The relationship among gender typing, self-esteem, and academic achievement was investigated in 314 middle school participants. Participants were administered the Children’s Sex Role Inventory (CSRI) and the Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory-School Form (CSEI). The results of the CSRI and CSEI were compared to each participant's score on the California Achievement Test (CAT). Analysis of variance, chi-square, and Pearson product moment correlation's were utilized to assess relationships among the variables. Service-Learning In Economics: A Detailed Application, Kimmarie Mcgoldrick Oct 1998

Service-Learning In Economics: A Detailed Application, Kimmarie Mcgoldrick

Service Learning, General

Over the past decade, a significant push has been made toward the adoption or development of alternative methods of disseminating economic concepts to students. Much of this work is grounded in the belief that we, as educators, must recognize who our students are as well as how they process information. Siegfried and colleagues ( 1991) have suggested that more needs to be done to teach students to think like economists. They outlined a number of approaches and changes that have the potential for improving undergraduate economic education by providing opportunities for students to practice thinking like economists.

The Shifting Preemption Paradigm: Conceptual And Interpretive Issues, Karen A. Jordan Oct 1998

The Shifting Preemption Paradigm: Conceptual And Interpretive Issues, Karen A. Jordan

Vanderbilt Law Review

Recent decisions have signaled a subtle shift away from the Supreme Court's categorical approach to the issue of federal preemption of state law, and toward a preemption continuum in which the implied preemption theories may inform an express preemption analysis. Yet, the Court as a whole has avoided addressing the issues arising from the integration of the doctrines. In this Article, Professor Jordan explores some of these difficult issues. The conceptual issues concern when and how the implied theories should be used in an analysis involving an express preemption clause. She analyzes the Court's recent use of the implied theories …

Notes On Constitutionalism For A 21st-Century Russian President, Dana Dallas Atchison Oct 1998

Notes On Constitutionalism For A 21st-Century Russian President, Dana Dallas Atchison

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

Are short-term political interests compromising prospects for a constitutional society in Russia? In Part I, this paper first considers the elements that contribute to constitutionalism. These include a constitution, democracy, public participation, the rule of law, an open society, a history of constitutionalism, public support for a constitutional order, importance of the individual, and an independent judiciary. Part II analyzes these themes against provisions in Russia's new Constitution and concludes that many articles have been compromised by Boris Yeltsin's personal political interests.

Part III appraises practical considerations that impact constitutional elements such as the public's expectations and concerns. Part III …

The Effects Of Phonological Awareness Activities On At-Risk First Grade Readers, Kimberly L. Van Belois Oct 1998

The Effects Of Phonological Awareness Activities On At-Risk First Grade Readers, Kimberly L. Van Belois

Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to look at a variety of phonological awareness studies and their impact on students with reading difficulties and to implement a program to develop student's reading abilities and look at its impact on student's knowledge of vowel and consonant recognition, vowel sounds, and sight words. Phonological awareness can be defined as one's sensitivity to, or explicit awareness of, the phonological structure of words in one's language. A number of researchers (eg., Libennan, Shankweiler, & Liberman, 1989) have concluded that adequate awareness of the phonological structure of words helps to make learning to read words …

Lives Of The Little-Known: Women Children And Servants In Augusta County, 1745-1779, Nancy B. Osborne Oct 1998

Lives Of The Little-Known: Women Children And Servants In Augusta County, 1745-1779, Nancy B. Osborne

History Theses & Dissertations

The court and its justices exerted a great deal of control and power over all the people of eighteenth-century Augusta County, Virginia. The justices oversaw the economic life of the county. They also arbitrated in civil matters and punished those convicted of crimes. The court exerted its authority most heavily over the less powerful of Augusta County society, its women, children, and servants. The justices' control of these people was based upon considerations of economic values and the justices' own prestige and power in the community. The women, children, and servants, in turn, used the court system to regain some …

Russian Supply Efforts In America During The First World War, Dale C. Rielage Oct 1998

Russian Supply Efforts In America During The First World War, Dale C. Rielage

History Theses & Dissertations

The Russian government entered the First World War unprepared for the strains that modern warfare would impose on its industrial resources. As a result, Russia turned to foreign suppliers, most significantly the United States, and made extensive purchases largely financed by British loans. These foreign supply efforts involved both the Tsarist government and representatives of the newly emerging civil elements in Russian society.

Central to the experience of Russian purchasing in the United States was the Russian Supply Commission in America. Established in October 1915 as a coordinating body, the Supply Commission was noteworthy in that it included representatives of …
