Frontal Chromatography Of Proteins: The Effect On Column Performance Of The Restricted Diffusion Of Molecules In Porous Chromatographic Adsorbents, Athanasios I. Liapis, H. Sadikoglu, Orrin K. Crosser

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A theoretical formulation is presented that can be used to describe the dynamic behavior of frontal chromatography of proteins in columns packed with adsorbent particles in which restricted pore diffusion of the adsorbate molecules occurs. The results of this work clearly indicate that the time for breakthrough and the effective utilization of the adsorptive capacity of the chromatographic particles increase as (a) the size of the adsorbate and/or ligand (active site) molecule decreases, (b) the pore connectivity, n(T), of the porous network of the adsorbent particles increases, and (c) the column length, L, increases. School of Medical and Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Upon sulfonation, carcinogenic hydroxyarylamines such as N-hydroxy-2-acetylaminofluorene (N-OH-2AAF) can be further activated to form ultimate carcinogens in vivo. Previous studies have shown that a SULT1C1 sulfotransferase is primarily responsible for the sulfonation of N-OH-2AAF in rat liver. In the present study, two novel human sulfotransferases shown to be members of the SULT1C sulfotransferase subfamily based on sequence analysis have been cloned, expressed, and characterized. Comparisons of the deduced amino acid sequence encoded by the human SULT1C sulfotransferase cDNA 1 reveal 63.7, 61.6, and 85.1% identity to the amino acid sequences of rat SULT1C1 sulfotransferase, mouse SULT1C1 sulfotransferase, and rabbit SULT1C …

Effect Of Temperature On Retention Of Enantiomers Of Β-Methyl Amino Acids On A Teicoplanin Chiral Stationary Phase, Antal Péter, Gabriella Török, Daniel W. Armstrong, Géza Tóth, Dirk Tourwé Dec 1998

Effect Of Temperature On Retention Of Enantiomers Of Β-Methyl Amino Acids On A Teicoplanin Chiral Stationary Phase, Antal Péter, Gabriella Török, Daniel W. Armstrong, Géza Tóth, Dirk Tourwé

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

The isocratic retention of enantiomers of β-methyl amino acids (β-methyltyrosine, β-methylphenylalanine, β-methyltryptophan and β-methyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline-3-carboxylic acid) was studied on a teicoplanin-containing chiral stationary phase at different temperatures and at different mobile phase compositions, using the reversed-phase mode. With variation of both mobile phase composition and temperature, almost baseline separations could be achieved for all four enantiomers of sterically hindered amino acids. The retention factors and selectivity factors for the enantiomers of all investigated compounds decreased with increasing temperature. The natural logarithms of the retention factors (ln k) of the investigated compounds depended linearly on the inverse of temperature (1/T). van 't …

Publications and Research

Background
The number of reports of influenza-vaccine-associated Guillain-Barré syndrome to the national Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System increased from 37 in 1992-1993 to 74 in 1993-1994, arousing concern about a possible increase in vaccine-associated risk.

Methods
Patients given a diagnosis of the Guillain-Barré syndrome in the 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 influenza-vaccination seasons were identified in the hospital-discharge data bases of four states. Vaccination histories were obtained by telephone interviews during 1995-1996 and were confirmed by the vaccine providers. Disease with an onset within six weeks after vaccination was defined as vaccine-associated. Vaccine coverage in the population was measured through a random-digit-dialing …

Tracking Control Of Uncertain Systems, Chaouki T. Abdallah, V. Koltchinski, S. Efromovich, G.L. Heileman

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Deals with the problem of designing output tracking controllers for uncertain systems. The systems we consider may be non-minimum phase but are restricted to be linear. The problem is motivated by control applications where a desired output trajectory is specified, and the corresponding input to the system is to be found.
