Finding Common Ground: Multicultural Ya Literature, Chris Crowe Jan 1998

Finding Common Ground: Multicultural Ya Literature, Chris Crowe

Faculty Publications

Unfortunately, I made little headway with my students. From their perspectives, people living on the other side of the world, especially "enemies," were so abstract they hardly seemed real. Because my students knew almost nothing about Soviet or Chinese people, the idea of exterminating all the "Commies" seemed about as horrifying or realistic to them as a Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote cartoon.

Part of their naivete resulted from the fact that they were typical teenagers: egocentric, unfamiliar with many of the ugly realities of the world, and prone to simplistic notions of right and wrong, good and evil.

A Bill Of Rights For The United Kingdom: From London To Strasbourg By The Northwest Passage?, Stephen Sedley Jan 1998

A Bill Of Rights For The United Kingdom: From London To Strasbourg By The Northwest Passage?, Stephen Sedley

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

In anticipation of the United Kingdom's patriation of the European Convention on Human Rights, the author explores the possible impact that a Bill of Rights will have on the U.K. system of justice from a European and U.K. perspective. The author argues that, from a European perspective, the U.K. has an established history of yielding to supra-national law given its membership in the European Union. However, from a U.K. perspective, this will present new challenges, as the constitutionality of domestic legislation is subject to increased judicial scrutiny in ensuring conformance with European Convention obligations. The author argues that the pressures …

"Pro-Life" Absolutes, Feminist Challenges: The Fundamentalist Narrative Of Irish Abortion Law 1986-1992, Ruth Fletcher

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article asks how Irish abortion law developed to the point of stopping a young pregnant rape victim from travelling abroad to have an abortion in 1992 (Attorney General v. X.). The author argues that this case, which ultimately saw the Irish Supreme Court overturn that decision and recognize the young woman's right to abortion, was the last chapter of the fundamentalist narrative of Irish abortion law. The feminist critique of that law needs to consider its particular fundamentalist aspects in order to clarify the obstacles posed to the struggle for Irish women's reproductive freedom. The author argues that a …

The Incidence Of Domestic Violence Among A Group Of Iowa Women In Substance Abuse Treatment, Patricia G. Fitzgerald Jan 1998

The Incidence Of Domestic Violence Among A Group Of Iowa Women In Substance Abuse Treatment, Patricia G. Fitzgerald

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Domestic violence is receiving increasing attention in the media, communities, and classrooms across the country. It is suggested a minimum of from 2 to 3 million women are assaulted by male partners each year in the United States. More than 3 out of every 100 or 1.8 million women were severely assaulted as they were kicked, punched, choked, beaten, threatened with a knife or gun, or had a knife or gun used on them. The contribution of alcohol or drugs to this phenomena is frequently acknowledged but rarely examined in detail. This paper reports the incidence of domestic violence among …

Experimental Testing And Modeling Of Automotive Automatic Belt Tensioners, Jiaxin Zhao, Clark R. Barker, Larry Oliver, William Breig, Joey Edson Jan 1998

Experimental Testing And Modeling Of Automotive Automatic Belt Tensioners, Jiaxin Zhao, Clark R. Barker, Larry Oliver, William Breig, Joey Edson

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Automatic belt tensioners are used in serpentine belt drive systems in many automotive front end accessory drive (FEAD) applications. The dynamic characteristics of the tensioner must be well defined in order to accurately model the entire belt drive system for system simulation studies. In order to determine required tensioner performance parameters, six different configurations of a production unit were tested over a wide range of frequencies at two different amplitudes of the arm travel. Data was recorded to define the total torque generated by the tensioner as a result of the known input motion to which the arm was subjected. …

Each semi-structured interview was transcribed to print and later analyzed for common trends in the data. The results of the study showed …

A Class Of Modified Hopfield Networks For Control Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Jie Shen, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 1998

A Class Of Modified Hopfield Networks For Control Of Linear And Nonlinear Systems, Jie Shen, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a class of modified Hopfield neural networks (MHNN) and their use in solving linear and nonlinear control problems. This class of networks consists of parallel recurrent networks which have variable dimensions that can be changed to fit the problems under consideration. It has a structure to implement an inverse transformation that is essential for embedding optimal control gain sequences. Equilibrium solutions are discussed. Numerical results for a motivating aircraft control problem (linear) are presented. Furthermore, we formulate the state-dependent Riccati equation method (SDRE) for a class of nonlinear dynamical system and show how MHNN provides the solution. …

Playing The Game: Female Graduate Students’ Communication Experiences, Jacqueline Marie Brucher Jan 1998

Playing The Game: Female Graduate Students’ Communication Experiences, Jacqueline Marie Brucher

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

In this thesis I examine the communication experiences of four female graduate students and the language they use to describe those experiences. Specifically, the women's use of metaphor to describe their academic environments is explored. A qualitative analysis of the linguistic choices of these women is achieved by applying Kenneth Burke's cluster analysis. I attempt to break the boundaries of rhetorical criticism by applying cluster analysis to conversation. Not only does this application open up new uses for the methodology, it also introduces additional means of analyzing various types of communication. All four women describe graduate school as "a game." …

An Mdo-Compatible Method For Robust Design Of Vehicles, Systems, And Components, Leslie D. Liaw, Richard I. Devries, Donald L. Cronin Jan 1998

An Mdo-Compatible Method For Robust Design Of Vehicles, Systems, And Components, Leslie D. Liaw, Richard I. Devries, Donald L. Cronin

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A CAE simulation process was developed to quantify the variability of vehicle attributes such as safety, durability, vehicle dynamics, NVH and weight. The process was integrated with the Ford multi-function optimization (MFO) tool — MOVE (Multi-Function Optimization Visualization Environments) in order to facilitate the robust design of vehicles, systems and components. The statistics of vehicle attribute responses are computed given the statistics of the design parameters. The response surface approximation was used to simplify the input and output relationships. A variety of statistical distributions can be selected to match the statistics of the design parameters which are continuous or discrete. …

The Effect Of A Baffle On Acoustic Radiation Directivity, Walter Eversman, Indranil Danda Roy Jan 1998

The Effect Of A Baffle On Acoustic Radiation Directivity, Walter Eversman, Indranil Danda Roy

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An investigation is made of the effect of an artificial baffle introduced in Finite Element modeling of acoustic radiation from turbofan inlets. The purpose of the baffle is to limit the extent of the computational domain in order to maximize the efficiency of the scheme. However, the possibility exists that the baffle, if improperly oriented, will generate spurious reflections which interfere with the true radiated acoustic field. A generic example of a turbofan inlet, including typical geometry and non-uniform potential flow in and around the nacelle, is modeled with a baffle as typically introduced limiting the angular extent of the …

An Integrated Approach To Determining The Sequence Of Machining Operations For Prismatic Parts With Interacting Features, Alan C. Lin, Shou Yee Lin, Das Diganta, Wen F. Lu Jan 1998

An Integrated Approach To Determining The Sequence Of Machining Operations For Prismatic Parts With Interacting Features, Alan C. Lin, Shou Yee Lin, Das Diganta, Wen F. Lu

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposed a framework for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and mechanistic models in the task of generating process plans for prismatic parts. The main issue of process planning addressed in this paper is the determination of the operation sequence for mechanical parts containing interacting features where machining of one feature might adversely affect the surface quality of other features. The informed graph-search strategy in AI is used to achieve the function of operation sequence planning. The search graph is built by considering alternative machining operations in converting a blank stock into the final part configuration. Several heuristic functions …

Evaluating Information Modeling Methods – A Review, Keng Siau, M. Rossi Jan 1998

Evaluating Information Modeling Methods – A Review, Keng Siau, M. Rossi

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Hundreds of modeling methods are in existence today, yet practitioners and researchers are zealously “producing” new modeling methods. The “blooming” of modeling methods is not the problem; the lack of standardized techniques for evaluating them is. To further complicate the matter, most of the modeling methods are introduced based on common sense and intuition. Theoretical foundations and empirical evidence are severely lacking. With the current state of affairs, evaluation of modeling methods has become necessary. Comparing modeling methods provides us with the necessary knowledge and understanding on the strengths and weaknesses of each method. This knowledge can also guide us …

Measurement Of The Axial-Vector Τ Spectral Functions And Determination Of Αs (M2Τ) From Hadronic Τ Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

Measurement Of The Axial-Vector Τ Spectral Functions And Determination Of Αs (M2Τ) From Hadronic Τ Decays, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An analysis based on 124 000 selected ττ pairs recorded by the ALEPH detector at LEP provides the vector (V)(V) and axial-vector (A)(A) spectral functions of hadronic ττ decays together with their total widths. This allows the evaluation of finite energy chiral sum rules that are weighted integrals over the (V−A)(V−A) spectral functions. In addition, a precise measurement of αsαs along with a determination of nonperturbative contributions at the ττ mass scale is performed. The experimentally and theoretically most robust determination of αs(M2τ)αs(Mτ2) is obtained from the (V+A)(V+A) fit that yields αs(M2τ)=0.334±0.022αs(Mτ2)=0.334±0.022 giving αs(M2Z)=0.1202±0.0027αs(MZ2)=0.1202±0.0027 after the extrapolation to the mass …

Search For Supersymmetry With A Dominant R-Parity Violating Llē Coupling In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Of 130 Gev To 172 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas Jan 1998

Search For Supersymmetry With A Dominant R-Parity Violating Llē Coupling In E+E- Collisions At Centre-Of-Mass Energies Of 130 Gev To 172 Gev, R. Barate, M. Thulasidas

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a dominant LLE¯LLE¯ coupling has been performed using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130–172 GeV. The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. This is translated into lower limits on the mass of charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, charginos with masses less than 73 GeV/c2c2 and neutralinos with masses less than 23 GeV/c2c2 are excluded at 95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LLE¯LLE¯ coupling, and for neutralino, slepton …

Aerosol Particle Scavenging By Fog And Haze Droplets, Josef Podzimek Jan 1998

Aerosol Particle Scavenging By Fog And Haze Droplets, Josef Podzimek

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Droplet imprints in thin gelatin layers have been used for the investigation of coarse particles embedded in fog (haze) droplets in comparison to interstitial particles. Droplet samples were taken in less polluted regions of Missouri and Illinois and also in more polluted marine-urban environment in Italy. Considerable differences in particle size distribution and particle location inside the droplets have been found in samples collected on four sampling sites. The deduced relationships can be applied for the description of the aerosol scavenging process in fogs. The pollution of fog (haze) droplets may be related to the droplet mean volume radius and …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have used the energy and angular distributions of the low-energy electron emission cross sections from the preceding paper [Lokesh C. Tribedi et al., Phys. Rev. A 58, 3619 (1998)] to derive the doubly differential final-state longitudinal momentum distributions of the electrons, recoil ions, and projectiles in ion-atom ionization for [Formula Presented] The complementary nature of the electron spectroscopy and the recoil-ion momentum spectroscopy have been investigated using a formulation based on three-body kinematics to explore the ionization dynamics in detail. The influence of the three-body ionization as well as the binary-encounter processes on the recoil-ion (and projectile) longitudinal momentum …

Utopia In Iowa?: Etienne Cabet And The Icarian Concept Of Progress, John Davis Higdon Jan 1998

Utopia In Iowa?: Etienne Cabet And The Icarian Concept Of Progress, John Davis Higdon

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Nineteenth century America was a period of transition. Reform movements paralleled and sometimes replaced politics as idealistic people worked for a cornucopia of social causes. Believing man capable of finding a universally correct lifestyle, numerous activists designed communities to guide the world to peace and prosperity. One of these groups, the Icarians, following the teachings of their founder Etienne Cabet, built several utopian hamlets in the United States and existed for over half a century. Their longevity can be primarily accredited to their espousal of the philosophical doctrine of Progress. An examination of the Icarian's history shows that a quasi-religious …

Short Story Collection: Love’S Will Be Done, Cornelia Hornburg Jan 1998

Short Story Collection: Love’S Will Be Done, Cornelia Hornburg

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Short stories are always a very personal thing. I invested a lot of emotions in my collection Love's Will Be Done and I feel the way the protagonists feel. My emphasis lies in the fact that all four protagonists are female characters. These are four different examples that monitor the struggle to live a happy life. Dreams are shattered, lives are taken and disillusion is the omnipotent feeling.. Four female personalities have to cope with the situation they are facing. As all humans, they are different because they are individuals. Thus, their ways of overcoming the problems are different, individual. …
