A New Look At Within-Source Interrater Reliability Of 360-Degree Feedback Ratings, Gary J. Greguras, Chet Robie
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
This study investigated within-source interrater reliability of supervisor, peer, and subordinate feedback ratings made for managerial development. Raters provided 360-degree feedback ratings on a sample of 153 managers. Using generalizability theory, results indicated that little within-source agreement exists; a large portion of the error variance is attributable to the combined rater main effect and Rater X Ratee effect; more raters are needed than currently used to reach acceptable levels of reliability; supervisors are the most reliable with trivial differences between peers and subordinates when the numbers of raters and items are held constant; and peers are the most reliable, followed …

A Company's Organs And Its Officers As Its Agents In Company Contracts / Shanti Thuraisingam, Thuraisingham Shanty
Pre-2000 Student Works
This dissertation proposes to examine the organs of the Company and its officers as its agents in company contracts. It will also examine the law in England and Australia pertaining to the said subject and recommend whether Malaysia should be prompted to adopt the statutory reforms of these countries. It is generally said that the human agency through which the capacity of the company can operate or manage and conduct itself lies either in the shareholders acting together in general meeting or the board of directors, the two principal organs of the company. Both these organs have an organic quality …
An Optimal Procedure For The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Discounted Cash Flows And Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen
An Optimal Procedure For The Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem With Discounted Cash Flows And Generalized Precedence Relations, Bert De Reyck, Willy Herroelen
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
In this paper, we consider the resource-constrained project scheduling problem (RCPSP) with discounted cash flows and generalized precedence relations (RCPSPDC-GPR). The RCPSPDC-GPR extends the RCPSP to (a) arbitrary minimal and maximal time lags between the starting and completion times of activities and (b) the non-regular objective function of maximizing the net present value of the project with positive and/or negative cash flows associated with the activities. To the best of our knowledge, the literature on the RCPSPDC-GPR is completely void. We present a depth-first branch-and-bound algorithm in which the nodes in the search tree represent the original project network extended …

The Conditional Heteroscedasticity Of The Yen-Dollar Exchange Rates, Yiu Kuen Tse
The Conditional Heteroscedasticity Of The Yen-Dollar Exchange Rates, Yiu Kuen Tse
Research Collection School Of Economics
This paper examines the conditional heteroscedasticity of the yen-dollar exchange rate. A model is constructed by extending the asymmetric power autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity model to a process that is fractionally integrated. It is found that, unlike the equity markets, the appreciation and depreciation shocks of the yen against the dollar have similar effects on future volatilities. Although the results reject both the stable and the integrated models, our analysis of the response coefficients of the past shocks and the application of the models to the estimation of the capital requirements for trading the currencies show that there are no substantial …
Confronting First Nations Cultural Genocide: Showcasing Perspective Of Cree Elders For Identity And Leadership Renewal, Phyllis S.A. Cardinal Edd
Confronting First Nations Cultural Genocide: Showcasing Perspective Of Cree Elders For Identity And Leadership Renewal, Phyllis S.A. Cardinal Edd
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to gain insight on the effects of cultural genocide through the lens of selected Cree elders in Alberta, Canada. The study enlisted the elders' perspective on the legacy of cultural genocide, and its residue. This process enabled the elders to offer views about Cree identity, and suggest a leadership perspective for continued cultural renewal. The study applied a Lockean theory to the attack on Natural Law to explain the genocide. The study also explained the way Locke's ideas may have contributed to the earlier federal policies that have subordinated the Cree, and to the …

Storytelling In Project Heart To Heart: A Means To Bridge Generational Gap In Post-1965 Filipino Immigrant Families, Juanita Toledo Santos Nacu Edd
Dissertations
As we share our experiences with others, we also explore its meaning to ourselves and to whomever it is being shared with. This is how stories are told. Most families usually develop a body of stories that is passed on from one generation to the next generation. These stories are used to preserve the family member's identity, history, and values. The stories touch not only our past experiences, but also influences our present and links it to the future. This study explored the Filipino American families' experiences of storytelling as a means of bridging together past, present, and future experiences …
Voices Against Discrimination And Exclusion: Latino School Leaders' Narratives For Change, Jaime J. Romo Edd
Voices Against Discrimination And Exclusion: Latino School Leaders' Narratives For Change, Jaime J. Romo Edd
Dissertations
Many scholars, practitioners, and policy makers know very little about individual Latino administrators' cultural and professional experiences, responses to discrimination, and patterns or institutional conditions which relate to K-12 ethnic minority administrators' success. Moreover, many are also unaware that as ethnic diversity increases, the relative proportion of minority administrators, many of whom could be role models, shrinks. Once we can recognize this as seeds for inequity in society, we might be able to consider the ways in which our educational institution reinforces or counters societal inequities. By specifically exploring Latino administrators' experiences, because of the large Latino California presence, we …

The Determinants Of Voter Turnout In English Local Government Elections, James Daniel Downe
The Determinants Of Voter Turnout In English Local Government Elections, James Daniel Downe
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
The level of local election turnout has important political and democratic implications. It is politically important because the electoral process ensures that local councillors are held directly accountable to the people. The level of voter turnout and how these votes are apportioned will determine the electoral outcome. Voter turnout also plays a significant role in our evaluation of local democracy. When voter participation is high then local democracy is perceived as being healthy, while low turnout is regarded as a sign of the public's lack of interest in the local democratic process. Given this background, therefore, it is surprising to …
Patriarchy And Discordant Discourses In The Contemporary Roman Catholic Church : The Voices Of Priests And Women In Parish Settings, Geraldine Sharp
Patriarchy And Discordant Discourses In The Contemporary Roman Catholic Church : The Voices Of Priests And Women In Parish Settings, Geraldine Sharp
School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses
This thesis explores the sexual theology and contemporary teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and considers their implications for women and priests. It examines the salience and relevance of traditional teaching in the everyday lives of priests and women. It questions the link between a traditionally formed priesthood and the customary beliefs and practices of 'ordinary' English Catholics. Feminist scholarship has produced powerful insights into the ways in which organised religion has subordinated women through patriarchal structures and organisation, although there has been little exploration of the gendered nature of Catholic sexual theology. This thesis suggests that the negative construction …
Market-Based Assets And Shareholder Value: A Framework For Analysis, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey
Market-Based Assets And Shareholder Value: A Framework For Analysis, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
The authors develop a conceptual framework of the marketing-finance interface and discuss its implications for the theory and practice of marketing. The framework proposes that marketing is concerned with the task of developing and managing market-based assets, or assets that arise from the commingling of the firm with entities in its external environment. Examples of market-based assets include customer relationships, channel relationships, and partner relationships. Market-based assets, in turn, increase shareholder value by accelerating and enhancing cash flows, lowering the volatility and vulnerability of cash flows, and increasing the residual value of cash flows. Does Medicare Eligibility Affect Retirement?, Brigitte C. Madrian, Nancy Dean Beaulieu
Does Medicare Eligibility Affect Retirement?, Brigitte C. Madrian, Nancy Dean Beaulieu
Faculty Publications
Concern over the lack of portability associated with employer-provided health insurance has precipitated a recent flurry of research activity on the effects of health insurance on labor market outcomes. Several estimates suggest that the costs associated with changing doctors and losing coverage for preexisting conditions are sufficient to deter individuals from changing jobs. These costs may be particularly important for older individuals contemplating retirement because a departure from the labor force may involve not only a change in doctors or lack of coverage for preexisting conditions but a complete loss of access to employer-provided group health insurance.
Economic Valuation Models For Insurers, David F. Babbel, Craig B. Merrill
Economic Valuation Models For Insurers, David F. Babbel, Craig B. Merrill
Faculty Publications
Recently much attention has been given to the approaches insurers undertake in valuing their liabilities and assets. For example, in 1994 the American Academy of Actuaries created a Fair Valuation of Liabilities Task Force to address the issue [see Doll et al. (1998), Reitano (1997), Babbel (1997, 1998b), Babbel and Merrill (1996), and Merrill (1997)]. In 1997, the Academy established a Valuation Law Task Force and a Valuation Tools Working Group to investigate the various valuation approaches extant and to recommend the models best suited to the task.
Much of the literature on valuation has focused on the strengths and …

The Influence Of Seventeenth-Century Anglo-Saxon Scholarship On Milton's Prose, "The History Of Britain", And "Paradise Lost"., Matthew B. Mccrady
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Was John Milton’s prose and poetry in any way influenced by seventeenth-century Anglo-Saxon scholarship? The answer is "yes." Just as John Milton was in dialogue with radical seventeenth-century political groups such as the Levellers and Diggers—a ground-breaking thesis first proposed by Christopher Hill—so Milton was also in dialogue with those academics and antiquarians researching and, in some ways, reinventing the Anglo-Saxon past. Through a close reading of Milton’s first Defense and other selected prose works, as well as the History of Britain and Paradise Lost, this thesis proposes to reexamine an old issue that has never been satisfactorily explicated. (Re)Envisioned (Pre)History: Feminism, Goddess Politics, And Readership Analysis Of The Clan Of The Cave Bear And The Valley Of The Horses, Glenna M. Andrade
Open Access Dissertations
Jean M. Auel's popular novels, The Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of the Horses, are examined via theories of political thought (history, economics, power), feminist theory (oppression, sex/gender roles), and popular literature's (genre) appeals to various 80s readership communities. Chapter Two draws from historical interests in women's myth to show that 70-80s religious and anthropo-archeological revisionism promote an 80s goddess theory in support of 70- 80s feminism; nonetheless, from a 90s vantage, Dani-goddess theorizing is problematized by universalism, teleology, and gender stereotyping. Chapter Three examines Clan's politics, religion, gender roles and the pitfalls of mythmaking to Clan's …
Asking New And Old Questions As We Remember The Future, Marva J. Dawn
Asking New And Old Questions As We Remember The Future, Marva J. Dawn
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
Let me explain my title, "Asking New and Old Questions as We Remember the Future." Because my training is in biblical ethics, my approach to various worship concerns centers on asking questions (the proper work of ethics) about how our worship practices form us to be God's people. If we are interested at this conference in what our "eschatological tradition" has to say to issues of worship, then we will discover the more new questions we ask, the more they will drive us back to the old ones. Indeed, "there is nothing new under the sun." Always, throughout human …
African-Americans, Latinos, And The Construction Of Race: Toward An Epistemic Coalition, George A. Martinez
African-Americans, Latinos, And The Construction Of Race: Toward An Epistemic Coalition, George A. Martinez
Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters
Latinos will soon become the largest minority group in the United States. African-Americans may therefore be about to give up political clout to Latinos. This prospect has generated tension between African-Americans and Latinos. Given this background, it is important for Critical Race Theory and Latino Critical Theory to consider the matter of the African-American/Latino relationship. With this in mind, the author discusses two important questions posed by the organizers of this panel: (1) How is the relationship between African-Americans and Latinos affected by the construction of race? and (2) Can Critical Race Theory benefit by a consideration of the race …
