A Rhetorical Comparison Of Spurgeon, Newman, And Macdonald, Robert Ellison Jan 1998

A Rhetorical Comparison Of Spurgeon, Newman, And Macdonald, Robert Ellison

English Faculty Research

This is the first book to employ the methods of orality-literacy scholarship in the study of nineteenth-century preaching. The debate over whether sermons should be read from the manuscript or delivered extempore is analyzed, and the Victorian practices of attending preaching services on Sunday and reading and writing about sermons throughout the week is discussed. The second part of the book analyses the rhetoric of Charles Haddon Spurgeon, John Henry Newman, and George MacDonald, and ends with a comparison of these three preachers' sermons on the death and resurrection of Lazarus.

The Victorian Pulpit: Spoken And Written Sermons In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Robert Ellison Jan 1998

The Victorian Pulpit: Spoken And Written Sermons In Nineteenth-Century Britain, Robert Ellison

English Faculty Research

The Victorian Pulpit is the first book to study the nineteenth-century British sermon from the perspective of orality-literacy theory (the branch of literary and rhetorical inquiry concerned with the differences between spoken and written language). Building on the groundbreaking work of Milman Parry in the 1920s Albert B. Lord and Eric A. Havelock in the 1960s and 1970s, and especially Walter J. Ong in the 1970s and 1980s, orality-literacy studies had become an active, wide-ranging discipline by the 1990s, the time the book was conceived and written.

The first part of this study of the sermon as "oral literature" focuses …

All-Optical Mode Mixer Spatial Switch Based On Cascading In Lithium Niobate, Yongsoon Baek, Roland Schiek, George Stegeman, Gaetano Assanto, W. Sohler Jan 1998

All-Optical Mode Mixer Spatial Switch Based On Cascading In Lithium Niobate, Yongsoon Baek, Roland Schiek, George Stegeman, Gaetano Assanto, W. Sohler

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

An all-optically induced spatial shift in the interference between the two lowest-order modes of a lithium niobate channel waveguide was demonstrated based on the power-dependent nonlinear phase shift induced via quadratic cascading.

Nature Of The Continuum Limit In The 2d Rp2 Gauge Model, S. M. Catterall, M. Hasenbusch, R. R. Horgan, R. Renken

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

The RP2 gauge model which allows interpolation between the RP2 and O(3) spin models is studied in 2D. We use Monte Carlo renormalization techniques for blocking the mean spin-spin interaction [A] and the mean gauge field plaquette [P]. The presence of the O(3) renormalized trajectory is verified and is consistent with the known three-loop beta function. The first-order "vorticity" transition observed by Solomon et al. is confirmed, and the location of the terminating critical point is established. New scaling flows in ([A],[P]) are observed associated with a large exponent kappa in the range 4-5. The scaling flows are found to …

Linear And Nonlinear Optical Properties Of Knbo3 Ridge Waveguides, Tomas Pliska, Daniel Fluck, Peter Günter, Lutz Beckers, Christoph Buchal Jan 1998

Linear And Nonlinear Optical Properties Of Knbo3 Ridge Waveguides, Tomas Pliska, Daniel Fluck, Peter Günter, Lutz Beckers, Christoph Buchal

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

Ridged channel waveguides in KNbO3 were produced using He+ ion implantation, photolithographic masking, and subsequent Ar+ ion sputtering. We investigated the linear and nonlinear optical characteristics of the waveguides. The effective mode indices are derived from the refractive index profiles using the effective index method. The losses are investigated as a function of wavelength and of the geometrical parameters channel width and ridge height. A minimum loss of 2 dB cm(-1) is measured at a wavelength of 0.633 mu m. We investigated the power handling capabilities at visible and near-infrared wavelengths. Second-harmonic generation in these waveguides is studied both theoretically …

Observability Of Counterpropagating Modes At Fractional Quantum Hall Edges, U. Zülicke, A. H. Macdonald, M. D. Johnson Jan 1998

Observability Of Counterpropagating Modes At Fractional Quantum Hall Edges, U. Zülicke, A. H. Macdonald, M. D. Johnson

Faculty Bibliography 1990s

When the bulk filling factor is nu=1-1/m with m odd, at. least one counterpropagating chiral collective mode occurs simultaneously with magnetoplasmons at the edge of Fractional quantum Hall samples. Initial experimental searches for an additional mode were unsuccessful. In this paper, we address conditions under which its observation should be expected in experiments where the electronic system is excited and probed by capacitive coupling. We derive realistic expressions for the velocity of the slow counterpropagating mode, starting from a microscopic calculation which is simplified by a Landau-Silin-like separation between long-range Hartree and residual interactions. The microscopic calculation determines the stiffness …

Agency Beyond Subjectivity : The Unredeemed Project Of May Fourth Fiction, Deirdre Sabina Knight Jan 1998

Agency Beyond Subjectivity : The Unredeemed Project Of May Fourth Fiction, Deirdre Sabina Knight

Journal of Modern Literature in Chinese 現代中文文學學報

This paper is part of a larger project in which I make a case for the central importance of the problem of free will to considerations of Chinese modernity. I begin by distinguishing between two key aspects of modernity and the Enlightenment: (1) subjectivity, or the realm of consciousness including the capacity for critical reason, and (2) agency, or acting on the world outside consciousness in a way that makes a difference. I then suggest that neglecting the development of rational agency cripples the force of the commitment to human freedom that drives the project of modernity. In calling attention …

Social And Regional Observations Of Contemporary China : An Exploration Of The Human Element As It Relates To Modernization., Patricia A. Weeks

USF St. Petersburg campus Honors Program Theses (Undergraduate)

China has been working for nearly a century to bring about the modernization of what has been considered the world's oldest continuous major world civilization. The initial call for reform came from the late Emperor Guangxu in the late 1890s after he realized that China seriously lagged behind the world on most fronts. Europe and America had undergone the pains of modernization through the industrial revolution, a phenomenon that China chose to ignore, and were now reaping the benefits. Japan, a nation more closely related to China, had prospered by imitating the West and taking advantage of its technology and …
