Field Evaluation Of Efficient Building Technology With Photovoltaic Power Production In New Florida Residential Housing, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker Nov 1998

Field Evaluation Of Efficient Building Technology With Photovoltaic Power Production In New Florida Residential Housing, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

The objective of the project, sponsored by the Florida Energy Office and Sandia National Laboratories, is to test the feasibility of building very efficient residential buildings that when combined with utility-interactive PV power, exert little net demand on the utility during the summer peak demand period.

Two single family homes - one, a super efficient residence with a utility interactive photovoltaic (PV) system, and another, a control home - have been constructed in Lakeland, Florida. The PV residence, or PVRES, was constructed with many measures designed to make it more efficient (Fig.E-1). These include a white tile reflective roof system, …

All Numbers Less Than 100 Are Interesting?, Dave Morice Nov 1998

All Numbers Less Than 100 Are Interesting?, Dave Morice

Word Ways

In the Feb 1977 Word Ways, Dmitri Borgmann wrote "All English words and names--all, without a single exception--are logologically interesting." He didn't define interestingness, and his examples didn't clarify matters. In the May 1980 Word ways, Philip Cohen attempted to codify the term, applying it to a finite set of words (the 50 states) with some success. I decided to apply the concept to a different set: the number names ONE, TWO, ...,NINETY-NINE. Mathematics plays an important part in wordplay. Because both logological and numerical properties can be considered, interestingness takes many strange twists and turns.

Mucho Ado About "Nothing", Thomas L. Bernard Nov 1998

Mucho Ado About "Nothing", Thomas L. Bernard

Word Ways

It is axiomatic that if you have nothing you have "no thing." Delving into this realm of nothingness has revealed numerous creative ways by which speakers of English express this idea of nonentity. As with this previous word, most "nothings" seem to begin with an N: none, nil, null, nary, naught, nix, and the north of England's nowt. Of late, one even finds numerous instances of the Spanish "nada" creeping in.

Two Swiss Of Peoria, Illinois, Marianne Burkhard Nov 1998

Two Swiss Of Peoria, Illinois, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In 1891, when he was 13, Emil Locher found himself transplanted to Peoria, Illinois, and faced with the necessity to help his mother and two siblings survive. His story gives some insight into working possibilities and conditions at the end of the last century. Without much schooling and without any professional training Emil Locher made his way up from a seasonal worker to the successful owner of a produce company without ever forgetting his poor childhood in Switzerland and the difficulties poor people have to face.
