Re-Defining Tradition: Handweavers To The World, Seema Chandna Jan 1998

Re-Defining Tradition: Handweavers To The World, Seema Chandna

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

It is my ongoing attraction for, and love of, Indian textiles that brought me back to my country of birth after spending several years, studying and working, in New York. This paper deals with my research, experience and observations, over the last year, working closely with the hand-weaving industry in India.

At my design studio, in Bangalore, I have a multi-treadle handloom and have employed a local hand-weaver. We create the designs and make sample swatches at the studio. For production of yardage, based on our swatches, we work with various weaving centers, located in different Southern Indian villages. Depending …

Fiber And Leather Products Of The Juhena Tribe Of Saudi Arabia And How They Are Made, Joy May Hilden Jan 1998

Fiber And Leather Products Of The Juhena Tribe Of Saudi Arabia And How They Are Made, Joy May Hilden

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The Juhena tribe in the northwestern region of Saudi Arabia, the Hijaz, live in coastal towns and villages and in remote, jagged mountains inland, parallel to the Red Sea coast. The coastal area has absorbed diverse cultural influences because of its proximity to Africa and Egypt and its location on an ancient trade route, on which Muslim pilgrims travel to the holy cities of Makkah and Medina. Some members of the tribe, such as the Egyptian-born mayor of Umlaj, have their roots elsewhere and have been adopted by the Juhena.

Coastal inhabitants are settled, semi-nomadic and nomadic, and survive by …

Weaving For Your Life: Creating Textiles In Dolp A, Nepal, Anne M. Johnson Jan 1998

Weaving For Your Life: Creating Textiles In Dolp A, Nepal, Anne M. Johnson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

High in the Himalayan mountains, two weeks walk from the nearest road, weaving is a necessity, not an option, for the women of the Dolpa region of Nepal. A woman weaves all of her life, and must weave for her family to survive the difficult life at this high altitude. Picture three weavers working outside in the late winter snowfall, seated on the ground within a low-walled enclosure. There can be more light and warmth outside, rather than inside, their stone houses. Weaving also provides a place of community, where men, women, and children gather to card fibers, spin, weave, …

Weaving In Taspinar: A Case Study Of Using Samplers In Carpet Weaving, Sumru Belger Krody Jan 1998

Weaving In Taspinar: A Case Study Of Using Samplers In Carpet Weaving, Sumru Belger Krody

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

The functions of samplers in needlework, as records of patterns and educational exercises, are well known. But the uses of samplers in carpet weaving have not been subject to serious study. This paper based on a case study conducted in the region around the town of Taspinar in Central Anatolia, will describe the appearance of carpet samplers, the role they play in carpet weaving, how they serve the weavers, and why they are important to weavers.

The field research conducted in the village of Taspinar was a result of responsibility undertaken in early 1996 of documenting a small group (15) …

Making It The "Old-Fashioned Way", Laura Foster Nicholson Jan 1998

Making It The "Old-Fashioned Way", Laura Foster Nicholson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

It is tempting to consider the process I am about to describe as the result of a point of view which is subjective and maybe even romantic. Although the adjective "old fashioned" as used in the title carries a certain amount of ironic wit, in fact my method of weaving is ancient and timeless. I chose it because it is the only way I can adequately convey the majority of my ideas about the textile world. I also work this way because I love the process itself I have tailored my ideas, and risked hobbling them, in order to continue …

Modeling The Mtf And Noise Characteristics Of Complex Image Formation Systems, Brian Bleeze Jan 1998

Modeling The Mtf And Noise Characteristics Of Complex Image Formation Systems, Brian Bleeze

Theses

The intent of this research was to model sensor degradation effects using an image chain applied to a synthetic radiance image. The model is relatively basic so that many types of sensors can be modeled. The sensor effects were applied in the frequency domain by cascading modulation transfer functions (MTF) and phase transfer functions (PTF) from the different stages of the image chain. The stages consist of the optical transfer function due to the aperture effects of the optical system. Noise due to photon arrival, the signal loss due to the transmission of the optics, the MTF due to the …

Macroeconomic Variables And The Performance Of The Indian Stock Market;, Atsuyuki Naka, Tarun Mukherjee, David Tufte Jan 1998

Macroeconomic Variables And The Performance Of The Indian Stock Market;, Atsuyuki Naka, Tarun Mukherjee, David Tufte

Department of Economics and Finance Working Papers, 1991-2006

In this paper we analyze relationships among selected macroeconomic variables and the Indian stock market. By employing a vector error correction model, we find that three long-term equilibrium relationships exist among these variables. Our results suggest that domestic inflation is the most severe deterrent to Indian stock market performance, and domestic output growth is its predominant driving force. After accounting for macroeconomic factors, the Indian market still appears to be drawn downward by a residual negative trend. We attribute this to economic mismanagement, since the size of the downward pull mitigates after 1990, coinciding with the beginning of Indian economic …

Substrate Oxidation And Energy Expenditure In Athletes And Nonathletes Consuming Isoenergetic High- And Low-Fat Diets, Heli J. Roy, Jennifer C. Lovejoy, Michael J. Keenan, George A. Bray, Marlene M. Windhauser, J. Krause Wilson Jan 1998

Substrate Oxidation And Energy Expenditure In Athletes And Nonathletes Consuming Isoenergetic High- And Low-Fat Diets, Heli J. Roy, Jennifer C. Lovejoy, Michael J. Keenan, George A. Bray, Marlene M. Windhauser, J. Krause Wilson

Faculty Publications

Changes in substrate oxidation with isoenergetic high-carbohydrate (HC) and high-fat (HF) diets in male nonathletic subjects, aerobically trained athletes, and weight-trained athletes were examined in a crossover study. A whole-room respiration chamber was used to measure 24-h energy expenditure (EE) and substrate oxidation with control, He, or HF diets for 7 d. The nonathletic group had higher 24-h EE (P < 0.05), exercise EE (P < 0.03), and resting metabolic rate (P < 0.04) than did the aerobically trained athletes when these measurements were corrected for lean body mass. Fat oxidation was significantly correlated with lean body mass and diet. However, athletic status had no effect on substrate oxidation. Carbohydrate oxidation across groups increased acutely by 23% after 24 h of the HC diet (P < 0.0001). Carbohydrate balance increased significantly over time with the HC diet (P < 0.002) and decreased acutely after return to the control diet (P < 0.0001). With the HF diet, carbohydrate balance increased and was significantly different from balance with the control diet by day 7 (P < 0.03). Fat balance decreased significantly with both the HF (P < 0.04) and HC (P = 0.0075) diets by day 7. Carbohydrate oxidation correlated with carbohydrate intake with both the control (r = 0.61, P < 0.01) and HC diets (r = 0.59, P < 0.02), but not the HF diet. Fat oxidation was not correlated with fat intake. In conclusion, substrate oxidation in a respiration chamber is significantly affected by diet, but not by prior athletic training.

Spatiotemporal Autoregressive Models Of Neighborhood Effects, R. Kelley Pace, Ronald Barry, John M. Clapp, Mauricio Rodriquez Jan 1998

Spatiotemporal Autoregressive Models Of Neighborhood Effects, R. Kelley Pace, Ronald Barry, John M. Clapp, Mauricio Rodriquez

Faculty Publications

Using 70,822 observations on housing prices from 1969 to 1991 from Fairfax County Virginia, this article demonstrates the substantial benefits obtained by modeling the spatial as well as the temporal dependence of the data. Specifically, the spatiotemporal autoregression with twelve variables reduced median absolute error by 37.35% relative to an indicator-based model with twenty-six variables. One-step ahead forecasts also document the improved performance of the proposed spatiotemporal model. In addition, the article illustrates techniques for rapidly computing the estimates and shows how to compute indices for any location.

What precisely is one asserting when one claims to be Latina/o? A political identity, an experiential identity, or both? Is the Latina/o identity racial, or ethnic, or cultural? Is it even ideologically or ontologically manageable? My father happens to be an African Cubano. My mother is Jamaican. I was born and raised in England. Am I a Latino? Or am I finally "just Black"? But you may be asking, why be binary? Identity is never an either/or proposition. Perhaps I am a "Black Latino." If so, doesn't the "Black" preceding "Latino" signify some lesser claim to Latino identity (I've never …

Assimilationist Bias In Equal Protection: The Visibility Presumption And The Case Of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", Kenji Yoshino Jan 1998

Assimilationist Bias In Equal Protection: The Visibility Presumption And The Case Of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell", Kenji Yoshino

Faculty Articles

Under current equal protection doctrine, the courts are more likely to accord heightened scrutiny to a classification if its defining trait is immutable or visible. This means that groups that can assimilate into mainstream society by changing or altering their defining trait are less likely to benefit from judicial solicitude. By withholding protection from these groups, the judiciary is subtly encouraging them to assimilate when faced with burdensome legislation. This Article critiques that assimilationist bias by demonstrating that the immutability and visibility factors cannot be justified on either substantive or processual theories of judicial review. Because the immutability factor has …

The Jew Taboo: Jewish Difference And The Affirmative Action Debate, Deborah Malamud Jan 1998

The Jew Taboo: Jewish Difference And The Affirmative Action Debate, Deborah Malamud

Faculty Articles

One of the most important questions for a serious debate on affirmative action is why certain minority groups need affirmative action while others have succeeded without it. The question is rarely asked, however, because the comparison that most frequently comes to mind-i.e., blacks and Jews-is seen by many as taboo. Daniel A. Farber and Suzanna Sherry have breached that taboo in recent writings. Professor Malamud's Article draws on work in the Jewish Studies field to respond to Farber and Sherry. It begins by critiquing their claim that Jewish values account for Jewish success. It then explores and embraces alternative explanations-some …

Before Cyberspace: Legal Transitions In Property Rights Regimes, Richard A. Epstein Jan 1998

Before Cyberspace: Legal Transitions In Property Rights Regimes, Richard A. Epstein

Faculty Articles

The innovations of technology neither preclude nor require fundamental transformations in the legal regime that governs them. In all cases the key issue can be framed as follows: because transitions in legal regimes are always costly and sometimes go astray, can one show that the rules of the past are so ill-fitting that some conscious and costly deviation from them is appropriate? No categorical answer is possible, for so much depends on how ill-fitting the old legal system is, how painful the transition is, and how well the new system would operate. The best we can do is to establish …

Collective Bargaining Over Asset Restructuring, Edward B. Rock, Michael L. Wachter Jan 1998

Collective Bargaining Over Asset Restructuring, Edward B. Rock, Michael L. Wachter

Faculty Articles

In both the union and nonunion sectors, firms restructure their assets and production, deciding continuously whether to make or buy an input (the subcontracting decision), as well as whether to continue or to exit a product line. The principal difference in the legal requirements applicable to restructuring in the union sector lies in the National Labor Relations Act's (NLRA) obligation to bargain over the "terms and conditions of employment." This obligation raises the legal question of when, in an asset restructuring, there is a duty to bargain with the union. The question has significance for asset restructuring in both the …
