Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Doubly differential cross sections d2σ / dν ‖ dν⊥ have been obtained by mapping the 3-dimensional velocity space of ultralow- and low-energy electrons \ (1.5 meV < = Ee < = 100 eV \) emitted in singly ionizing 3.6 MeV / u Au53+ on helium collisions. A sharp \ ( ΔEFWHMe⊥< = 22 meV \) asymmetric peak centered at = 0 is observed to emerge at ultralow energies from the strongly forward shifted low-energy electron velocity distribution. The shape of this "target cusp," which is very sensitive on the details of the two-center potential, is in excellent accord with theoretical predictions. © 1998 The American Physical Society.

Two Steps Forward, Three Steps Back: The Stormy History Of Reading Comprehension Assessment, Loukia K. Sarroub, P. David Pearson Nov 1998

Two Steps Forward, Three Steps Back: The Stormy History Of Reading Comprehension Assessment, Loukia K. Sarroub, P. David Pearson

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

After closely examining the recent history of reading comprehension assessment in the United States, we have concluded that although both the forms of assessment and the key players in the assessment process have changed in significant ways, the functions of assessment have remained relatively constant. In terms of function, we have always used, and continue to use, assessment tools to evaluate programs, to hold particular groups accountable for some specified set of outcomes (though it may seem that that is all we do these days), to inform instruction, either for individuals or whole classes, and finally, to determine who gains …

"There are clear hints that he entered the uncleared area to a length of 5.3m along the tape of the left hand side. He entered also the area where should be the next lane. The distance from the left marking (tape) to the accident place is 2.15m. The accident place could not be reached by detector from the last marked safe place in the clearance lane as well as from the cleared area. After the explosion the legs of the injured person were laying in the uncleared area. His right neighbour cleared the area around the body to have access …

Synthesis, Characterization And Electrochemical Investigations Of Metal Complexes Derived From Pendant-Arm Macrocycles., Thomas Loren Hatfield Nov 1998

Synthesis, Characterization And Electrochemical Investigations Of Metal Complexes Derived From Pendant-Arm Macrocycles., Thomas Loren Hatfield

Theses and Dissertations

This Ph.D. research focused on improvement in the understanding of structurally perturbed electron transfer (ET) events. This broad category of ET was divided into the two categories of concerted and sequential mechanisms. Investigations of the concerted mechanism focused on the electrochemical behavior of six redox couples: (Cr(III/II)TCTA($\rm\sp{0/-},\ \lbrack Mn(II/III)TCTA\rbrack\sp{-/0}$, (Mn(III/IV)TCTA) $\sp{\rm 0/+$, (Fe(II/III)TCTA) $\sp{\rm 0/-}$, (Co(II/III)TCTA) $\sp{\rm -/0}$, and (Ni(II/III)TCTA) $\sp{\rm /-}$ (where TCTA is 1,4,7-triazacyclononane N,N$\rm\sp\prime,N\sp{\prime\prime}$ triacetate). After synthesis of TCTA and the Cr(III), Mn(II), Mn(III), Fe(II), Fe(III), Co(III) Ni(II) and Ni(III) TCTA complexes, each complex was characterized by UV-vis-near IR, FTIR, magnetic susceptibility and Molar Conductance. Electrochemical characterization …

Characterization Of Kapton Polymer Containing An Inorganic Additive, Juan Betancourt Nov 1998

Characterization Of Kapton Polymer Containing An Inorganic Additive, Juan Betancourt

Theses

With a full space program in progress, new types of materials are needed for spacecraft construction. These materials need to be strong, have good thermal stability and be good insulators. One of the materials with these properties is Kapton, manufactured by Dupont. Being a polyimide, it provides these characteristics, and being quite stable to ultraviolet light makes it the best of its kind for space use. The only concern is that, at the altitudes where earth observing spacecrafts orbit the earth, high concentrations of monoatomic oxygen (AO) react with the organic material and produce CO and H20. In an attempt …

Structure Of The Protein Kinase Cβ Phospholipid-Binding C2 Domain Complexed With Ca2+, R. Bryan Sutton, Stephen R. Sprang Nov 1998

Structure Of The Protein Kinase Cβ Phospholipid-Binding C2 Domain Complexed With Ca2+, R. Bryan Sutton, Stephen R. Sprang

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Conventional isoforms (α, β and γ) of protein kinase C (PKC) are synergistically activated by phosphatidylserine and Ca2+; both bind to C2 domains located within the PKC amino-terminal regulatory regions. C2 domains contain a bipartite or tripartite Ca2+-binding site formed by opposing loops at one end of the protein. Neither the structural basis for cooperativity between phosphatidylserine and Ca2+, nor the binding site for phosphatidylserine are known. Results: The structure of the C2 domain from PKCβ complexed with Ca2+ and o-phospho-L-serine has been determined to 2.7 Å resolution using X-ray crystallography. The …

Collective Excitations In An Asymmetrically Spin-Polarized Quantum Well, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn Nov 1998

Collective Excitations In An Asymmetrically Spin-Polarized Quantum Well, D C. Marinescu, J J. Quinn

Publications

We present a phenomenological picture for the many-body excitations of a two-dimensional electron gas in a quantum well spin polarized by a dc magnetic field at an angle ␪ with the axis of the well. In the framework of the Landau theory of charged Fermi liquids, we determine the frequencies of collective modes by solving a transport equation for quasiparticles in the local electromagnetic field associated with the charge- and spin-density fluctuations. In the long-wavelength limit, analytic solutions for ␻(qជ) are obtained as functions of the degree of spin polarization and of the angle ␪.

Transport Equation And Diffusion In Ultrathin Channels And Films, A. E. Meyerovich, A. Stepaniants Nov 1998

Transport Equation And Diffusion In Ultrathin Channels And Films, A. E. Meyerovich, A. Stepaniants

Physics Faculty Publications

A rigorous perturbative transport equation for ballistic particles in thin films with random rough walls is derived by the diagrammatic Keldysh technique for both quasiclassical and quantized motion across the film. The derivation is based on canonical Migdal transformation that replaces a transport problem with random rough walls by an equivalent problem with flat boundaries and randomly distorted bulk. The rigorous derivation requires a modification of our previously used transformation to avoid non-Hermitian perturbations. The unusual nondiagonal structure of the effective scattering operator makes the transport equation different from the standard Waldmann-Snider equation when the distance between quantized levels for …

Nitric Acid Scavenging By Mineral And Biomass Burning Aerosols, A Tabazadeh, M Z. Jacobson, H B. Singh, O Brian Toon, J S. Lin, R B. Chatfield, A N. Thakur, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb Nov 1998

Nitric Acid Scavenging By Mineral And Biomass Burning Aerosols, A Tabazadeh, M Z. Jacobson, H B. Singh, O Brian Toon, J S. Lin, R B. Chatfield, A N. Thakur, R. Talbot, Jack E. Dibb

Earth Sciences

The abundance of gas phase nitric acid in the upper troposphere is overestimated by global chemistry-transport models, especially during the spring and summer seasons. Recent aircraft data obtained over the central US show that mineral aerosols were abundant in the upper troposphere during spring. Chemical reactions on mineral dust may provide an important sink for nitric acid. In regions where the mineral dust abundance is low in the upper troposphere similar HNO3 removal processes may occur on biomass burning aerosols. We propose that mineral and biomass burning aerosols may provide an important global sink for gas phase nitric acid, …

An Empirical Algorithm For Light Absorption By Ocean Water Based On Color, Zhongping Lee, Kendall L. Carder, R. G. Steward, T. G. Peacock, C. O. Davis, J. S. Patch Nov 1998

An Empirical Algorithm For Light Absorption By Ocean Water Based On Color, Zhongping Lee, Kendall L. Carder, R. G. Steward, T. G. Peacock, C. O. Davis, J. S. Patch

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Empirical algorithms for the total absorption coefficient and absorption coefficient by pigments for surface waters at 440 nm were developed by applying a quadratic formula that combines two spectral ratios of remote-sensing reflectance. For total absorption coefficients ranging from 0.02 to 2.0 m(-1), a goodness of fit was achieved between the measured and modeled data with a root-mean-square difference between the measured and modeled values for log10 scale (RMSDlog10) of 0.062 (15.3% for linear scale, number of samples N = 63), while RMSDlog10 is 0.111 (29.1% for linear scale, N = 126) for pigment absorption (ranging from 0.01 to 1.0 …

Detection Of The Fast Kelvin Wave Teleconnection Due To El Niño‐Southern Oscillation, Steven D. Meyers, Arne Melsom, Gary T. Mitchum, James J. O'Brien

Marine Science Faculty Publications

Previous analyses of the ocean state along the western American coast have often indicated unexpectedly slow and limited propagation of coastally trapped Kelvin waves associated with the El Niño‐Southern Oscillation. In contrast, theoretical and numerical ocean models demonstrate that these Kelvin waves are a rapid and long‐range teleconnection between the low‐ and high‐latitude Pacific Ocean, strongly impacting both the surface coastal currents and nutrient upwelling. Sea level variations along the western coast of North America are reexamined under the assumption that tropically forced Kelvin waves are produced in bursts of several months duration. A cross‐correlation analysis, restricted to mid‐1982 to …

Enhancing The Effectiveness Of Social Skills Interventions With Adolescents, David J. Hansen, Douglas W. Nangle, Kathryn A. Meyer Nov 1998

Enhancing The Effectiveness Of Social Skills Interventions With Adolescents, David J. Hansen, Douglas W. Nangle, Kathryn A. Meyer

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

Competent social interactions are clearly necessary for adjustment and successful functioning in society. The many developmental events and changing social expectations that occur during adolescence can make it particularly challenging for youth to establish and maintain competent social interactions. Research on social skills training with adolescents began in the mid-tolate 1970’s and it has improved much over the years. The research has gradually moved beyond a focus on basic skill assessment and acquisition in clinical settings toward techniques designed to assess and promote generalization and maintenance of an effective interpersonal repertoire in real world settings and situations. This article discusses …
