In their Comment [1] to our Letter [2], Rutherford and Grobe first disagree with our conclusion that “a tabletop Stern-Gerlach filter is feasible.” Given our estimate of the throughput for such a device, ~0.3 electrons/s, we were clearly not proposing it as an alternative to standard polarized electron sources (~1015 electrons/s). The main argument for “feasibility” is based on the relatively low currents required to establish the solenoidal magnetic field (5 A)—hence the use of the word “tabletop” in the abstract. In retrospect, a better statement would have been that “experimental demonstration of such a spin-splitting effect may be …

Strong Dissipative Behavior In Quantum Field Theory, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos Nov 1998

Strong Dissipative Behavior In Quantum Field Theory, Arjun Berera, Marcelo Gleiser, Rudnei O. Ramos

Dartmouth Scholarship

We study the conditions under which an overdamped regime can be attained in the dynamic evolution of a quantum field configuration. Using a real-time formulation of finite temperature field theory, we compute the effective evolution equation of a scalar field configuration, quadratically interacting with a given set of other scalar fields. We then show that, in the overdamped regime, the dissipative kernel in the field equation of motion is closely related to the shear viscosity coefficient, as computed in scalar field theory at finite temperature. The effective dynamics is equivalent to a time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau description of the approach to equilibrium …

Development Of A Generalized Theoretical Model For The Response Of A Phase/Doppler Measurement System To Arbitrarily Oriented Fibers Illuminated By Gaussian Beams, Scott A. Schaub, James A. Lock, Amir A. Naqwi Nov 1998

Development Of A Generalized Theoretical Model For The Response Of A Phase/Doppler Measurement System To Arbitrarily Oriented Fibers Illuminated By Gaussian Beams, Scott A. Schaub, James A. Lock, Amir A. Naqwi

Physics Faculty Publications

We present a generalized theoretical model for the response of the phase/Doppler (P/D) measurement system to light scattered by cylindrical fibers. This theoretical model is valid for arbitrary fiber diameters and refractive indices, for Gaussian incident beams, and it accounts for arbitrary fiber orientations, fiber positions, and effects that are due to the two-dimensional receivers. The generalized P/D computer model (GPDCM) is the extension of an earlier study by the authors, combining past P/D simulation methodology with recent developments in modeling light scattering by tilted cylindrical fibers. A FORTRAN computer program that implements the GPDCM theoretical development was written and …

Near–Infrared Classification Spectroscopy: H–Band Spectra Of Fundamental Mk Standards, Michael R. Meyer, Suzan Edwards, Kenneth H. Hinkle, Stephen E. Strom Nov 1998

Near–Infrared Classification Spectroscopy: H–Band Spectra Of Fundamental Mk Standards, Michael R. Meyer, Suzan Edwards, Kenneth H. Hinkle, Stephen E. Strom

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present a catalog of H-band spectra for 85 stars of approximately solar abundance observed at a resolving power of 3000 with the KPNO Mayall 4 m Fourier Transform Spectrometer. The atlas covers spectral types O7M5 and luminosity classes IV as defined in the MK system. We identify both atomic and molecular indices and line ratios that are temperature and luminosity sensitive, allowing spectral classification to be carried out in the H-band. The line ratios permit spectral classification in the presence of continuum excess emission, which is commonly found in premain-sequence or evolved stars. We demonstrate that with …

Arnold, Joan Oral History Interview, Marisa Burnham-Bestor

Edmund S. Muskie Oral History Collection

Joan (Williams) Arnold was born in Augusta, Maine on January 1, 1932. Her parents were Marie (Simpson), a housewife and Joseph P. Williams, a contractor. Joan’s childhood was fairly political, her father being an active Democrat in the Augusta area. After graduating from Cony High School, Joan went on to LaSalle Junior College in Newton, Massachusetts, graduating in
1951. She worked for General Motors as a secretary for a few years, and then found herself back in Augusta in 1954 as a secretary in Governor Ed Muskie’s office. She left the Capitol in 1957 when she married Bill Arnold and …

One aspect of the complexity of mid- and high-harmonic generation in highintensity laser-plasma interactions is that nonlinear hydrodynamics is virtually always folded together with the nonlinear optical conversion process. We have partly dissected this issue in picosecond and subpicosecond interactions with preformed plasma gradients, imaging and spectrally resolving low- and mid-order harmonics. We describe spatial breakup of the picosecond beam in preformed plasmas, concomitant broaden~ng and breakup of the harmonic spectrum. presumably through self-phase modulation, together with data on the sensitivity of harmonics production efficiency to the gradient or extent of prefomed plasma. Lastly. we show preliminary data of regular …

Scales 2: Computer Program To Convert Among Developmental Stage Scales For Corn And Small Grains, Dorothy M. Harrell, Wallace Wilhelm, Gregory S. Mcmaster

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Producers and agronomists need crop developmental scales that are easy to use, universally accepted, and accurate. Development of such a scale requires correlation of stages among scales currently in use and correlation of developmental patterns among crops. A computer program for converting among staging systems is a useful tool in developing new staging systems with wider applicability. The BBCH scale (BASF-Bayer-Ciba-Geigy-Hoechst) has been proposed as a prototype of a universal scale. We have added the BBCH scale to our scale conversion program for wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and developed a similar conversion program for corn (Zea mays L.), …
