High Resolution Spectroscopy Of Some Very Active Southern Stars, David R. Soderblom, Jeremy R. King, Todd J. Henry Jul 1998

High Resolution Spectroscopy Of Some Very Active Southern Stars, David R. Soderblom, Jeremy R. King, Todd J. Henry

Publications

We have obtained high-resolution echelle spectra of 18 solar-type stars that an earlier survey showed to have very high levels of Ca II H and K emission. Most of these stars belong to close binary systems, but five remain as probable single stars or well-separated binaries that are younger than the Pleiades on the basis of their lithium abundances and Hα emission. Three of these probable single stars also lie more than 1 mag above the main sequence in a color-magnitude diagram, and appear to have ages of 10 to 15 Myr. Two of them, HD 202917 and HD 222259, …

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Recovery plans identify reasonable actions which are believed to be required to recover and/or protect endangered species. Plans are prepared by the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and sometimes with the assistance of recovery teams, contractors, State agencies, and others. This plan was prepared by Randall R. Reeves, Phillip J. Clapham, Robert L. Brownell, Jr., and Gregory K. Silber for NMFS. Recovery plans do not necessarily represent the views nor the official positions or approvals of any individuals or agencies, other than those of NMFS, and they represent the views of NMFS …

Inheritance And Qtl Analysis Of Field Resistance To Ashy Stem Blight In Common Bean, Phillip N. Miklas, Valerie Stone, Carlos A. Urrea, E. Johnson, James S. Beaver Jul 1998

Inheritance And Qtl Analysis Of Field Resistance To Ashy Stem Blight In Common Bean, Phillip N. Miklas, Valerie Stone, Carlos A. Urrea, E. Johnson, James S. Beaver

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Ashy stem blight [caused by Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid.] can be a serious disease of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) under drought and high temperature conditions in some regions. The mode of inheritance of valuable sources of resistance is lacking. We studied inheritance of field resistance to ashy stem blight in a recombinant inbred population (’Dorado’ × XAN 176) consisting of 119 F5:7 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) tested in replicated experiments across 2 yr. A score from 1 to 9 (no disease to severe disease) was used to measure disease reaction. Moderate HNs (0.53 and 0.57) and …

Lithium In The Young Cluster Ngc 2264, Jeremy R. King Jul 1998

Lithium In The Young Cluster Ngc 2264, Jeremy R. King

Publications

We use moderate-resolution, moderate signal-to-noise ratio spectroscopy to derive Li abundances for six F and G stars in the young (few Myr) cluster NGC 2264. These are combined with consistently determined abundances of five NGC 2264 G and K stars having published Li data. The mean non-LTE abundance, calculated with photometric temperatures, is log N(Li) = 3.27 ± 0.05. This is essentially identical to the meteoritic value, providing no evidence of Galactic Li enrichment over the past 4.6 Gyr—at least to the extent that the meteoritic value represents a typical "cosmic" value at that time. The scatter of 0.16 dex …

Fatigue: Investigation Of A Human Factor For Regional Airline Pilots, Doug Mikkelsen Jul 1998

Fatigue: Investigation Of A Human Factor For Regional Airline Pilots, Doug Mikkelsen

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This study analyzed the causes of regional airline pilot fatigue and the impact on pilot performance. An instrument was developed and refined through a field study validation by a panel of experts. The final instrument was distributed to three groups of regional airline pilots. The data supported the literature review, which revealed many causes of pilot fatigue, including flight crew schedules that are not compatible with human limitations; Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs) that have not evolved with the advancement of aircraft performance and the public demand for 24 hour availability of flights; and poor personal habits. An analysis of the …

The Sword Of The Spirit: Pentecostals And Political Power In Guatemala, Thomas Joseph Metallo Jul 1998

The Sword Of The Spirit: Pentecostals And Political Power In Guatemala, Thomas Joseph Metallo

Faculty Dissertations

Guatemala was predicted to become the first nation to become predominantly Protestant due to the tremendous growth of the Pentecostal church between 1960 and 1990. Historically, the Pentecostal church was very pietistic and did not involve itself in politics. However, the presidency of Efrain Rios Montt (1982-1983) and the election of Jorge Serrano Elias (1991-1993) reflect a change among Pentecostals with regard to political involvement. The Protestant church has moved from a marginalized minority to comprising almost twenty-five percent of the population. In the August, 1994 congressional elections, 20 of the 80 congressmen elected to office were evangelical Christians (25%). …

"Validly Adopted Interpretations": Defining The Deference Standard In Aviation Certificate Action Appeals, Denise A. Banaszewski Jul 1998

"Validly Adopted Interpretations": Defining The Deference Standard In Aviation Certificate Action Appeals, Denise A. Banaszewski

Washington Law Review

The split-enforcement model of agency administration creates a dilemma for the adjudicating agency regarding how much deference it should allot interpretive documents promulgated by the agency with rulemaking authority. In 1992, Congress sought to resolve this problem in the area of aviation safety by statutorily mandating that the adjudicating agency, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), defer to "validly adopted" interpretations generated by the rulemaking agency, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Ironically, the statute created even more uncertainty because the term "validly adopted" is vague and remains undefined. Subsequent decisions have not clarified exactly when the NTSB considers itself bound. …

Intercultural Training For Global Organisations, Irene Matin Rubio Jul 1998

Intercultural Training For Global Organisations, Irene Matin Rubio

IIMB Management Review

Liberalisation has seen many economies, especially in Asia, opening their hitherto sheltered domestic markets to global competition and providing greater opportunities to trade and foreign investment. The spinoffs of liberalisation bring in new implications, opportunities and challenges for the governments as well as the organisations involved. Round Table features some of the issues discussed in the conference on 'Managing Economic Liberalisation in South Asia : Directions for the 21st Century' held in Chennai, India, from August 10 -13. Selvarajah examines the realignment of economies towards globalisation as a development of regionalism. The shift in economic forces away from multilateral arrangements …

"The Best Laid Schemes . . . ": Land-Use Planning And Historic Preservation In Cambodia, William Chapman Jul 1998

"The Best Laid Schemes . . . ": Land-Use Planning And Historic Preservation In Cambodia, William Chapman

Washington International Law Journal

This Article examines existing land use laws and proposed historic preservation-related legislation in Cambodia and offers a critical appraisal of their applicability and hopes for success. Cambodia is a small country that faces (and has faced) numerous political and economic difficulties. It possesses a rich architectural and archaeological heritage that is threatened by proposed land-use changes and future development. Initiated primarily by outsiders, principally planners and archaeologists from Europe and the United States, Cambodia's newly formulated land-use laws attempt to take irreplaceable cultural resources into account. However, plans such as those proposed by UNESCO and consultants to the government appear …

Square Pegs And Round Holes: Fitting Modern Title Into Traditional Societies In Indonesia, Timothy Lindsey Jul 1998

Square Pegs And Round Holes: Fitting Modern Title Into Traditional Societies In Indonesia, Timothy Lindsey

Washington International Law Journal

In Indonesia, diverse interests in land recognised by dozens, maybe hundreds, of different adat (traditional customary legal systems) coexist with a Dutch-derived system of land title. The most problematic adat interest is traditional communal title, or hak ulayat. Indonesia's New Order government sees adat rights—and hak ulayat in particular—as incompatible with the demands of economic development. Although some adat rights are recognised in the key statute regulating interests in land, the Basic Agrarian Law, the New Order government has systematically subverted the standing of adat. Likewise, the land registration system has become a corrupt failure, with the consequence …

Customary Title, Heritage Protection, And Property Rights In Australia: Emerging Patterns Of Land Use In The Post-Mabo Era, Maureen Tehan Jul 1998

Customary Title, Heritage Protection, And Property Rights In Australia: Emerging Patterns Of Land Use In The Post-Mabo Era, Maureen Tehan

Washington International Law Journal

The Mabo decision represented a major doctrinal change in the relationship between Indigenous people and the settler legal system. However, significant legislative developments in land use and management recognizing some Indigenous interests in land had already laid the groundwork for joint land management schemes and concurrent land uses. These developments have formed the basis for ongoing expansion of coexistent land uses with the negotiation of formal and informal agreements for co-management of land. A range of factors influence these agreements, including the existence of enforceable property rights and non-property based heritage protection legislation. These regimes are currently in a state …

The Physiology Of Life-History Trade-Offs: Experimental Analysis Of A Hormonally Induced Life-History Trade-Off In Gryllus Assimilis, Anthony J. Zera, Jason Potts, Kari Kobus Jul 1998

The Physiology Of Life-History Trade-Offs: Experimental Analysis Of A Hormonally Induced Life-History Trade-Off In Gryllus Assimilis, Anthony J. Zera, Jason Potts, Kari Kobus

Anthony Zera Publications

Adult Gryllus assimilis given an analog of juvenile hormone exhibited reduced flight muscles and enlarged ovaries similar to those found in naturally occurring flightless individuals of species that are polymorphic for dispersal capability. Control and hormone-treated (flightless) G. assimilis did not differ in the amount of food consumed or assimilated on any of three diets that differed in nutrient quantity. Thus, enhanced ovarian growth of flightless individuals resulted from increased allocation of internal nutrients to reproduction (i.e., a trade-off) rather than from increased acquisition of nutrients. Compared with flight-capable controls, flightless G. assimilis also had reduced whole-organism respiration, reduced respiration …

Employment Protection And Domestic Violence: Addressing Abuse In The Labor Grievance Process, Jennifer Atterbury Jul 1998

Employment Protection And Domestic Violence: Addressing Abuse In The Labor Grievance Process, Jennifer Atterbury

Journal of Dispute Resolution

The effects of domestic violence are not limited to the home environment. Its effects are felt in employment when abused employees are absent from work and when violent incidents erupt in the workplace. For example, a bruised employee might be too injured and embarrassed to attend work, or an estranged spouse might stalk and harass a victim on the job. Another issue arises in that employers often discipline victims of domestic violence for absenteeism and incidents of violence that occur in the workplace. Discipline of union members is governed by collective bargaining agreements and subject to the labor grievance process. …

Utilitarian Analysis Of The Objectives Of Criminal Plea Negotiation And Negotiation Strategy Choice, Joseph W. Vanover Jul 1998

Utilitarian Analysis Of The Objectives Of Criminal Plea Negotiation And Negotiation Strategy Choice, Joseph W. Vanover

Journal of Dispute Resolution

This article examines the repercussions of choosing a negotiating style for the present criminal case on the actions of opposing counsel in future cases. It scrutinizes the criminal plea negotiating process from the perspective of both a prosecuting attorney and a defense attorney. It analyzes this process using two philosophical theories: act utilitarianism and rule utilitarianism.
