Nato After Enlargement: New Challenges, New Missions, New Forces, Stephen J. Blank Dr. Sep 1998

Nato After Enlargement: New Challenges, New Missions, New Forces, Stephen J. Blank Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

In 1999 NATO will formally admit three new members and adopt a new strategic concept. In so doing, it will take giant strides towards effecting a revolutionary transformation of European security. On the one hand, it could be said that NATO enlargement closes the immediate post-Cold War period that began with the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989. But on the other hand, enlargement raises a host of serious new issues for the Alliance and for U.S. policymakers that they must begin to address now. Bearing this fact in mind, the Strategic Studies Institute (SSI) organized a conference with …

Can Photoemission Accurately Probe The Bulk Electronic Structure Of The Complex Oxides?, Jaewu Choi, C. Waldfried, Sy-Hwang Liou, Peter A. Dowben Sep 1998

Can Photoemission Accurately Probe The Bulk Electronic Structure Of The Complex Oxides?, Jaewu Choi, C. Waldfried, Sy-Hwang Liou, Peter A. Dowben

Peter Dowben Publications

The surface of the complex oxides, in particular the manganese perovskites, is dominated by a different free enthalpy at the surface. This can be demonstrated by surface segregation after annealing the samples. By comparing relative x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy intensities of the manganese perovskite La1-xCaxMnO3 (x=0.1, 0.35) for different emission angles, the profile of elemental concentration was determined. Analysis shows evidence for pronounced surface segregation of calcium. Our results suggest that there are strong differences between surface and bulk enthalpies without segregation or surface relaxation. This is consistent with the previously observed surface resonance in the …

A Comparison In Processing Of Alginate Orthodontic Impressions By Commercial Labs, Robert Agnetta Sep 1998

A Comparison In Processing Of Alginate Orthodontic Impressions By Commercial Labs, Robert Agnetta

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Many orthodontists use commercial orthodontic laboratories for the processing of their impressions including preparation of the impression for pouring, model retrieval, final trim, and labeling. It was studied, by way of random sample survey, what materials and methods were most commonly utilized in 100 offices of members of the American Association of Orthodontics. This survey data was analyzed and used to establish a protocol to study differences in dimensions of models made from impressions that were poured immediately, versus those that were stored and picked up at the office the same day they were taken, and those that were shipped …

Minimum Cross-Entropy Approximation For Modeling Of Highly Intertwining Data Sets At Subclass Levels, Qiuming Zhu Sep 1998

Minimum Cross-Entropy Approximation For Modeling Of Highly Intertwining Data Sets At Subclass Levels, Qiuming Zhu

Computer Science Faculty Publications

We study the problem of how to accurately model the data sets that contain a number of highly intertwining sets in terms of their spatial distributions. Applying the Minimum Cross-Entropy minimization technique, the data sets are placed into a minimum number of subclass clusters according to their high intraclass and low interclass similarities. The method leads to a derivation of the probability density functions for the data sets at the subclass levels. These functions then, in combination, serve as an approximation to the underlying functions that describe the statistical features of each data set.

Post-Mccleskey Racial Discrimination Claims In Capital Cases, John H. Blume, Theodore Eisenberg, Sheri Lynn Johnson Sep 1998

Post-Mccleskey Racial Discrimination Claims In Capital Cases, John H. Blume, Theodore Eisenberg, Sheri Lynn Johnson

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In federal habeas corpus proceedings, Earl Matthews, an African American, South Carolina death row inmate, alleged that his death sentence was the result of invidious racial discrimination that violated the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment. To support his contention, Matthews presented statistical evidence showing that in Charleston County, where a jury convicted him and sentenced him to death, the prosecutor was far more likely to seek a death sentence for a Black defendant accused of killing a white person than for any other racial combination of victims and defendants, and also that such a Black defendant was more …

Is Service Learning A Good Idea? Data From The National Longitudinal Study Of 1988., June R. Chapin Sep 1998

Is Service Learning A Good Idea? Data From The National Longitudinal Study Of 1988., June R. Chapin

Service Learning, General

Service learning is an integral part of social studies that aims to instill social responsibility among students. According to the National Longitudinal Study of 1988, a significant percentage of high school students participated in community work during the previous two years and that this involvement in community service was greatest in church or church-related groups. However, the survey showed that students favor diversity in their choice of community work and that social action is not their top priority. Furthennore, there is confusion about the difference between service and community learning.

Innovative Pedagogy: Academic Service- Learning For Business Communication, Jean L. Bush-Bacelis Sep 1998

Innovative Pedagogy: Academic Service- Learning For Business Communication, Jean L. Bush-Bacelis

Service Learning, General

Academic Service-Learning (AS-L) is an innovative business communication pedagogy. Like community service, AS-L involves students volunteering in the community; however, AS-L requires the infusion of the classroom content into the community service experience. This article describes AS-L, the assignment for a business communication class, and students’ reactions as well as benefits and challenges to its use. The greatest strength of using AS-L is students’ tying theory into actual application of principles, student passion for the work, faculty enthusiasm for the results, and community satisfaction.

A Search For Common Ground: Value Preferences Of Lay And Religious Teachers In Roman Catholic Secondary Schools, Candace H. Lacey Sep 1998

A Search For Common Ground: Value Preferences Of Lay And Religious Teachers In Roman Catholic Secondary Schools, Candace H. Lacey

Journal of Catholic Education

This study examined the value preferences of full-time lay and religious faculty members in Roman Catholic secondary schools in one archdiocese. Using The Study of Values (Allport, Vernon, & Lindzey, 1960), two main research questions were addressed: What relative importance do teachers place on the six identified values? And what differences exist between the value preferences of religious and lay teachers? Findings indicated that both religious and lay teachers considered the religious value preference most important, while the economic value was the least preferred orientation. The significant difference found between groups for the religious valued preference is discussed in terms …
