The Last Refuge Hard And Soft Hansonism In Contemporary Australian Politics, Chandran Kukathas, William Maley Sep 1998

The Last Refuge Hard And Soft Hansonism In Contemporary Australian Politics, Chandran Kukathas, William Maley

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The arrival of Pauline Hanson’s One Nation on the Australian political scene hasbeen the subject of much discussion, but there has been little analysis of what itspolicies really mean. Consideration of those policies, or ‘Hard Hansonism,’ inrelation to immigration reveals attitudes that are simplistic, populist, nostalgic anddeeply hostile to Australia’s liberal-democratic tradition.

The Jason-1 Satellite Design And Development Status, T. Lafon, F. Parisot

Small Satellite Conference

The Jason satellite is the first satellite based on the PROTEUS small satellite platform. The stated objectives of the PROTEUS product line are to reduce costs and development time, while maintaining a high level of performances for science missions. The Jason mission is a follow-on cooperative effort between NASA and CNES for the continuous observation of the oceans. Jason will ensure ocean measurement survey until 2005, as a successor to the TOPEX-POSEIDON mission. The JASON satellite carries on-board instrumentation unherited from the TOPEX program but at much less mass, power and cost. The satellite will be launched on-board a Delta …

The Subsystemless Satellite - A New Design Paradigm For The Next Generation Of Small Satellites, Bill Jackson, Jim Campbell Sep 1998

The Subsystemless Satellite - A New Design Paradigm For The Next Generation Of Small Satellites, Bill Jackson, Jim Campbell

Small Satellite Conference

Traditional satellite design techniques appear to break down for very small spacecraft weighing less than about 50 lbs. In order to break this barrier, it is necessary to implement a new satellite design paradigm - that of the "subsystemless" satellite. In such a satellite, the design process emphasizes the identification and specification of functional requirements per the usual systems engineering procedures. However, the identified requirements are never allocated to subsystems. Instead, the various spacecraft functions are implemented directly without regard to traditional spacecraft subsystem boundaries. The result is a highly integrated design which is compact, lightweight, and highly efficient. This …

A Low-Cost Modular Nanosatellite Based On Commercial Technology, Craig Underwood, Mike Crawford, Jeff Ward

Small Satellite Conference

This paper presents the design of the University of Surrey's SNAP-1 nanosatellite which is planned for launch in 1999. The satellite is modular in design and is based entirely on "commercial-off-the-shelf' (COTS) technologies. The objective of the "SNAP" Programme is to provide a very low cost orbital test vehicle for micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) and to provide practical education and training for engineers in the techniques and rigours a spacecraft design and construction.

Leostar™Development And Validation, G. Berger, L. Dribault, P. Damilano

Small Satellite Conference

The LEOSTAR generic avionics development currently in progress at Matra Marconi Space Toulouse center can be easily adapted to a variety of small satellites in LEO, with specific sensor and equipment suite selected according to the mission needs. A generic avionics bench has been set up and proto-flight equipment procured for a comprehensive configuration. The development and validation are performed along an incremental process for the two AOCS main modes, Acquisition and Safe Hold mode (ASH) and Normal mode. The functional and dynamics behavior is analyzed and compared with the results of the SIMULEO simulation software, with any potential deviation …

Miniature Sensor Technology Integration (Msti) -3 Pointing Error Analysis And Compensation, Howard Taylor, Lesley Rahman, Todd Probert

Small Satellite Conference

MSTI-3, an advanced technology demonstration satellite, was launched on May 16, 1996, to collect data in the short wave infrared (SWIR) and medium wave infrared (MWIR) bands. MSTI-3's mission was to survey the Earth: collecting data to support analysis of ground features, such as terrain and bodies of water; and atmospheric features, such as clouds and aurora. In April 1997, MSTI-3 analysts computed a pointing offset of approximately 50 miles. This paper summarizes the detailed fault analysis implemented by the operations team, including steps taken to isolate the cause of the pointing error to the payload mirror gimbal roll encoder …

Issues To Be Addressed In The Design And Fabrication Of Ultralightweight, Meter Class Optics, Gary Krumweide Sep 1998

Issues To Be Addressed In The Design And Fabrication Of Ultralightweight, Meter Class Optics, Gary Krumweide

Small Satellite Conference

There is a growing need for large aperture, ultralightweight, deployable optics (mirrors) for various science, military and commercial compact satellites (Pleimann 1997). This paper will examine the engineering and manufacturing considerations that must be addressed in order to satisfy the requirements for these sought after optics. In order to limit the scope of this paper, only Graphite Fiber Reinforced/Polymer Matrix Composites (GFR/PMC) will be under consideration because of the potential to satisfy ultralightweight mirror requirements (5 - 10 Kg/m2 ) (KasI1997). The requirements associated with specular mirror concepts that Composite Optics, Incorporated (COl) has proposed to Air Force Research Laboratory …

It travels in a 580 x 550 km, sunsynchronous orbit with a 10:30 AM ascending node. It spins at 5 rpm with the spin …

Design And Performance Of The Orbview-2 Attitude Control System, Tobin Anthony, Sanjivan Sivapiragasam Sep 1998

Design And Performance Of The Orbview-2 Attitude Control System, Tobin Anthony, Sanjivan Sivapiragasam

Small Satellite Conference

The OrbView-2 satellite, launched on August 1, 1997, is the world's first commercially owned imaging satellite. Because of the commercial nature of the mission, design of the OrbView-2 attitude control system was constrained by cost as well as the normal physical parameters. In addition to maintaining a nadir-pointing momentum-biased mission mode, the spacecraft maintains a wide variety of operating modes including an extended orbit-raising sequence. The mission requirements were met without the use of gyros or other high-cost attitude sensing hardware. This paper provides an overview of the attitude control system design as well as a description of the post-launch …
