Surface tension and the length δ (distance between the Gibbs surface of tension Rs and the equimolar surface Re) of simple liquid droplet (Lennard-Jones and Yukawa) are computed over a wide range of droplet sizes up to about 4x106 molecules. The study is based on the Gibbs theory of capillarity combined with the density–functional approach to gas–liquid nucleation. Since this method provides behavior of the surface tension fully consistent with the tension of the planner surface, the constant in Tolman’s equation δx can be determined unequivocally from the asymptotic behavior of σ s . Transport Of Axl2p Depends On Erv14p, An Er–Vesicle Protein Related To The Drosophila Cornichon Gene Product, Jacqueline Powers, Charles Barlowe
Dartmouth Scholarship
COPII-coated ER-derived transport vesicles from Saccharomyces cerevisiae contain a distinct set of membrane-bound polypeptides. One of these polypeptides, termed Erv14p (ER-vesicle protein of 14 kD), corresponds to an open reading frame on yeast chromosome VII that is predicted to encode an integral membrane protein and shares sequence identity with the Drosophila cornichon gene product. Experiments with an epitope-tagged version of Erv14p indicate that this protein localizes to the ER and is selectively packaged into COPII-coated vesicles. Haploid cells that lack Erv14p are viable but display a modest defect in bud site selection because a transmembrane secretory protein, Axl2p, is not …

To those unfamiliar with the long, often bitter, struggle over equally compelling needs to provide, on the one hand, innovators with an adequate opportunity to recoup risk capital and to avoid, on the other, erecting unwarranted barriers to competition, a dispute over the proper scope of review for Patent and Trademark Office (PTO) patent appeals will seem both trivial and arcane. This case involves more than semantics -- its resolution turns on the allocation of power among three, and arguably four, branches of government. This Court, itself, has a stake.

Performance Indicators: Information In Search Of A Valid And Reliable Use, E. Raymond Hackett, Sarah D. Carrigan
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Measures of overall institutional performance were explored from a decision support perspective with twenty similar Carnegie Classification Baccalaureate II institutions. The study examined the usefulness of performance indicators in campus decision making following both a hypothesis testing and case study approach. Two conclusions were reached: first, that the performance measures most commonly cited in the literature as measures of institutional financial viability are of limited use for institution specific policy development; and second, that performance indicators are most effectively used within an institution specific, whole system framework.

A Fuzzy Expert System Architecture Implementing Onboard Planning And Scheduling For Autonomous Small Satellite, Yang Jiajun, Xu Guodong, Chao Xibin, Ma Xingrui
Small Satellite Conference
A crucial element in achieving small satellite fully autonomy is onboard automated planning and scheduling. Though lots of successful applications about it in spacecraft operations have recently been reported, and all of them are important for the development of this field, the inherent fuzziness and uncertainty of planning and scheduling was ignored made the achieving of onboard automated planning and scheduling system become idealization and no reality. In response to above-mentioned requirement, this paper presents an architecture which is developed using rules-based Fuzzy Expert System (FES). Fuzzy expert systems not only maintains the value of based rules and the merit …

Earth Orbiter-1, Incorporating New Technology Advanced Sensors And Instruments, Mark Perry, Michael Mccullough, Wayne Roher, Matthew Jurotich
Small Satellite Conference
Earth Orbiter-1 (EO-1) is a flight segment of the New Millennium Program, which evaluates new technologies for future space missions. Although EO-1' s most important new technologies are part of the Advanced Land Imager (ALI) instrument - which contains several technologies that will be evaluated for use in the follow-on to Landsat 7 - many un-proven technologies are incorporated into the spacecraft. Systems engineers are challenged to incorporate as many new and innovative technologies as possible, but still minimize the risk to the primary goal of the mission: to evaluate the ALI performance. Following a short overview of the EO-1 …
