Flarr Pages #11: Spanish: Teaching The "Musical Preterite", Tom Washington

FLARR Pages

If you were given the choice of learning 23 words or 95 words--and you knew that you would acquire the same amount of knowledge either way, which would you choose? That is the positive option that the "musical preterite" offers in teaching the simple past.

During the first four or five months, language students learn a limited number of words and structures, which allows them to write on equally limited subjects, usually personal, such as: "Describe yourself, your friends and relatives, your room, your clothes, your weekly activities, etc. What do you buy when you go to the stores? Imagine a dialogue between two characters, etc." This type of composition is fine during that beginning period, but beyond, it loses its usefulness, for the learners tend to recycle the same ideas, phrases and constructions which they have been using since chapter two. Little improvement or …

Physics & Astronomy

Recent interpretations of cusp energetic ions observed by the POLAR spacecraft have suggested a new energization process in the cusp [Chen et al., 1997; 1998]. Simultaneous enhancement of H+, He+2, and O>+2 fluxes indicates that they are of solar wind origin. In the present study, we examine H+ and He+2 energy spectra from 20 eV to several 100 keV measured by the Hydra, Toroidal Imaging Mass-Angle Spectrograph (TIMAS), and Charge and Mass Magnetospheric Ion Composition Experiment (CAMMICE) on POLAR. The combined spectrum for each species is shown to be continuous with a …

Finding Cyclic Redundancy Check Polynomials For Multilevel Systems, James A. Davis, Miranda Mowbray, Simon Crouch Oct 1998

Finding Cyclic Redundancy Check Polynomials For Multilevel Systems, James A. Davis, Miranda Mowbray, Simon Crouch

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

This letter describes a technique for finding cyclic redundancy check polynomials for systems for transmission over symmetric channels which encode information in multiple voltage levels, so that the resulting redundancy check gives good error protection and is efficient to implement. The codes which we construct have a Hamming distance of 3 or 4. We discuss a way to reduce burst error in parallel transmissions and some tricks for efficient implementation of the shift register for these polynomials. We illustrate our techniques by discussing a particular example where the number of levels is 9, but they are applicable in general.

Diminished Capacity As A Result Of Intoxication And Addiction: The Capacity To Mitigate Punishment And The Need For Recognition In Texas Death Penalty Litigation, Katherine A. Drew Oct 1998

Diminished Capacity As A Result Of Intoxication And Addiction: The Capacity To Mitigate Punishment And The Need For Recognition In Texas Death Penalty Litigation, Katherine A. Drew

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This paper examines the substantial need for a defense to criminal culpability that has a lesser requirement than the traditional defenses of insanity and intoxication. The article details the traditional defenses of insanity, involuntary intoxication, and voluntary intoxication. Additionally, the myths surrounding diminished capacity are explored. In conclusion, an examination is made of the essence of mitigation in a capital murder context and the need to recognize a defense of diminished capacity to the death penalty.

How Far Do The Powers Of The I.R.S. Extend In The Fifth Circuit? Johnson V. Sawyer, Darrell Calvin Oct 1998

How Far Do The Powers Of The I.R.S. Extend In The Fifth Circuit? Johnson V. Sawyer, Darrell Calvin

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The Fifth Circuit chose to recognize a judicially-created exception to the statute in Johnson v. Sawyer. This Note takes issue with the Fifth Circuit's holding in Johnson. The IRS is a creature of statute and, as such, should be governed by statute. If any further life is given the agency, it is for Congress, and not the judiciary to declare. If taxpayers convicted in the Fifth Circuit are to have their transgressions publicized, it should be with the specific approval of their elected representatives. Part I of this Note traces the development of judiciallycreated exceptions to I.R.C. § 6103 in …

Data Standardization, Thomas Powell Oct 1998

Data Standardization, Thomas Powell

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

As the international community has placed increasing emphasis on efforts to identify, classify, neutralize, or remove landmines or other unexploded ordnance (UXO), the need to communicate information concerning the location, description, and hazards associated with these munitions has become apparent. Numerous database structures have been created to store information about the various munitions. However, different organizations, countries, or individuals have adopted their own unique data definitions and database structures, and these differences could affect the kinds of information available through these sources.
