Automatic Flowchart Displays For Software Visualisation, Paul R. Schurmann Jan 1998

Automatic Flowchart Displays For Software Visualisation, Paul R. Schurmann

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Understanding large software projects and maintaining them can be a time consuming process. For instance, when changes are made to source code, corresponding changes have to be made to any related documentation. One large section of the documentation process is the creation and management of diagrams. Currently there are very few automated diagramming systems that can produce diagrams from source code, and the majority of these diagramming systems require a significant amount of time to generate diagrams. This research aims at investigating the process of creating flowchart diagrams from source code and how this process can be fully automated. Automating …

Rural Palliative Care Nursing: A Modified Grounded Theory Study, Ruth Mcconigley Jan 1998

Rural Palliative Care Nursing: A Modified Grounded Theory Study, Ruth Mcconigley

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This paper presents the findings of a study of rural palliative care nurses in Western Australia. The numbers of rural centres in Western Australia offering palliative care services are increasing; however at present there is little empirical data available about the roles of the nurses involved. This study was undertaken to begin to correct this deficit. The study examines basic social processes associated with the role of rural palliative care nurses and identities issues that affect the nurses’ professional practice. A modified grounded theory approach was used to form a conceptual framework that describes rural palliative care nursing. Theoretical sampling …

The Effect Of Lip-Slur Practice On Increasing Pitch Range In Brasswind Instrument Students, Robert L. Benton Jan 1998

The Effect Of Lip-Slur Practice On Increasing Pitch Range In Brasswind Instrument Students, Robert L. Benton

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Lip-slur exercises comprise part of the practice routines of many professional and serious amateur brasswind players. There are several reasons why so many players practise lip-slurs. One of those reasons is the belief that lip-slurs contribute to the development of the brasswind high register. This study argues that while there is a vast amount of anecdotal evidence from many authors widely deemed to be influential in the form of method books or writings that lip-slurs can contribute to the development of the brasswind high register, there has been little research to support this widely held belief. This study used a …

The Causal Role Of Selective Information Processing Biases Towards Threat In Anxiety, Sarah J. Egan Jan 1998

The Causal Role Of Selective Information Processing Biases Towards Threat In Anxiety, Sarah J. Egan

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The causal link between selective information processing biases and vulnerability to anxiety was investigated by examining change in emotional vulnerability as mediated by attentional training. Training was given on a modified dot-probe detection task, where participants were trained either to attend towards threat or towards neutral stimuli. Pre and post training assessment consisted of the anagram stress task (measure of emotional vulnerability), the dot-probe detection task (measure of training effectiveness), and the emotional Stroop task (measure of generalisation of training). The 54 undergraduate student participants, who were in a mid-range of trait anxiety, were randomly allocated to one of 3 …

The Lived Experience Of A Group Of Mothers, Geographically Isolated From Their Extended Families, In Establishing Their Social Support Networks, Stephanie Jackiewicz Jan 1998

The Lived Experience Of A Group Of Mothers, Geographically Isolated From Their Extended Families, In Establishing Their Social Support Networks, Stephanie Jackiewicz

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This study explores the Jived experience of a group of women, geographically isolated from their extended family, as they establish their new support networks. It is based on the assumption that the shape and structure of families are constantly changing and evolving and this change in family structure impacts on both the parents and the children. One of the significant changes families are experiencing is the increasing isolation of the nuclear family from traditional family networks. It is the purpose of this study to explore the experience of this group of women to identify how the members establish their support …

Science Laboratory Investigations In Year 9: Instruction And Assessment, Pamela J. Garnett Jan 1998

Science Laboratory Investigations In Year 9: Instruction And Assessment, Pamela J. Garnett

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The purpose of this research was to develop, implement and evaluate science investigation work based on a cognitive apprenticeship model of instruction and 'linked' to different assessment procedures. Data were gathered to evaluate the effects of the instruction and approaches to assessment on teachers and students, and on the development of students' investigation competency. Year 9 students performed six science investigations in which they examined a relationship between variables. Groups of three students worked together to choose the independent variable, plan their investigation, collect and analyse their data, and to evaluate their findings. The cognitive apprenticeship model of instruction included …

An Investigation Of Family Literacy Practices Of Eight Families With Preprimary Children And A Family Literacy Program Conducted In A Low Socio-Economic Area, Jennifer A. Jayatilaka Jan 1998

An Investigation Of Family Literacy Practices Of Eight Families With Preprimary Children And A Family Literacy Program Conducted In A Low Socio-Economic Area, Jennifer A. Jayatilaka

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Study of the research literature showed that literacy skills are socialised in young children along with their learning of oral language. This socialisation process occurs within a child's home environment long before they enter formal schooling. Family literacy has been shown to have the potential to impact powerfully on children's perceptions about literacy use through role models and support provided by various family and community members. Literacy activity is often deeply embedded in daily family practices. For some children, differences between home and school literacy practices can occur. Where this mismatch occurs for children in low socio economic homes the …

Does The Conceptual Nature Of Worry Contribute To Its Uncontrollability? : Unravelling The Complex Interactions Of Some Of The Properties Of Worry, Jacinta M. Willans Jan 1998

Does The Conceptual Nature Of Worry Contribute To Its Uncontrollability? : Unravelling The Complex Interactions Of Some Of The Properties Of Worry, Jacinta M. Willans

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This project aims to examine a particular property of worry that some therapists claim interferes with the treatment of clients who worry. Research has shown that worry is predominantly composed of concepts or thoughts rather than images (Borkovee & Hu, 1990). In particular this project aims to investigate whether the verbal linguistic nature of worry contributes to the sense that participants have that it is uncontrollable. Attempting to control an image results in a paradoxical effect of an increase in the frequency of the image (Wegner, Schneider, Carter & White, 1987). Does the same paradoxical effect occur when thoughts and …

A Comparison Of Advanced Time Series Models For Environmental Dependent Stock Recruitment Of The Western Rock Lobster, Saarah A. Farag Jan 1998

A Comparison Of Advanced Time Series Models For Environmental Dependent Stock Recruitment Of The Western Rock Lobster, Saarah A. Farag

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

Time series models have been applied in many areas including economics, stuck recruitment and the environment. Most environmental time series involve highly correlated dependent variables, which makes it difficult to apply conventional regression analysis, Traditionally, regression analysis has been applied to the environmental dependent stock and recruitment relationships for crustacean species in Western Australian fisheries. Alternative models, such as transfer function models and state space models have the potential to provide unproved forecasts for these types of data sets. This dissertation will explore the application of regression models, transfer function models, and state space models to modelling the puerulus stage …

Art Therapy In Mainstream Primary Schools In The United Kingdom And The United States Of America : Identifying Connections With The Australian Experience, Jan Bowdler Jan 1998

Art Therapy In Mainstream Primary Schools In The United Kingdom And The United States Of America : Identifying Connections With The Australian Experience, Jan Bowdler

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

This thesis is a case study that explores art therapy programs that are being or have been established in mainstream primary education settings in the United Kingdom, United States of America and Australia. The study includes a review of literature which relates an application of art therapy principles and practice to an education framework and the developmental and emotional needs of primary age children. The art therapy programs are examined in terms of the target population (eg. abused, rejected, disaffected, vulnerable children); the value of these programs to children in the primary school system (ie. in helping to remove students' …

A Comparative Study Of Controversy In The Education Systems Of Western Australia, Victoria And New Zealand: Community Participation In Government Schools 1985-1993, Anne M. Coffey Jan 1998

A Comparative Study Of Controversy In The Education Systems Of Western Australia, Victoria And New Zealand: Community Participation In Government Schools 1985-1993, Anne M. Coffey

Theses: Doctorates and Masters

The release of Better Schools in Western Australia: A Programme for Improvement (1987), in line with other public sector agency reforms; contained a prescription for the restructuring of the Education Department of Western Australia from 11 bureaucratic to a corporate management system of school administration. These changes were intended to render the education system, and especially schools more flexible, responsive and accountable. Among the proposals for educational restructuring was a new opportunity for community participation through ''school based decision making groups." Contemporaneously, the education systems in Victoria and New Zealand were undergoing similar reforms. The research agenda for this thesis …

Enculturing Nature, William Lloyd Cornett Jan 1998

Enculturing Nature, William Lloyd Cornett

Dissertations and Theses

Human activity is embedded within a myriad of seldom-acknowledged ecological relationships. Anthropology and ecology, two holistic disciplines concerned with these activities, struggle with the topic of human/nature relationships because both are grounded within larger western discourses separating human behaviors from those of the natural world. This thesis examines the histories of anthropology and ecology in the 20th Century, and the effect these disciplines have had upon the formulation of contemporary urban worldviews that are based upon the separation of humans from nature.

Using A Realistic Job Preview To Communicate Organizational Culture, Johanna Glode Jan 1998

Using A Realistic Job Preview To Communicate Organizational Culture, Johanna Glode

Dissertations and Theses

The present study sought to determine how organizational culture information could best be presented to job applicants for the purpose of attracting employees who will fit into an organization's culture. Attraction to the organization's culture was hypothesized to influence applicant self-selection into the company. Two different types of Realistic Job Previews (RJPs), semantic and episodic, were compared in their ability to convey information accurately about a hypothetical organizational culture. Participant knowledge of the culture was hypothesized to align objective, or actual, fit with subjective perceptions of fit.

Knowledge of the organization's culture, objective fit, subjective fit, attractiveness of the culture, …

Hu-Tucker Alogorithm For Building Optimal Alphabetic Binary Search Trees, Sashka Davis Jan 1998

Hu-Tucker Alogorithm For Building Optimal Alphabetic Binary Search Trees, Sashka Davis

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to study the behavior of the Hu- Tucker algorithm for building Optimal Alphabetic Binary Search Trees (OABST), to design an efficient implementation, and to evaluate the performance of the algorithm, and the implementation. The three phases of the algorithm are described and their time complexities evaluated. Two separate implementations for the most expensive phase, Combination, are presented achieving 0(n2) and O(nlogn) time and 0(n) space complexity. The break even point between them is experimentally established and the complexities of the implementations are compared against their theoretical time complexities. The electronic version of "The Complete …

Defending The Middle Way: Intermediate Scrutiny As Judicial Minimalism, Jay D. Wexler Jan 1998

Defending The Middle Way: Intermediate Scrutiny As Judicial Minimalism, Jay D. Wexler

Faculty Scholarship

In the last few years, Court-watchers have been particularly busy critiquing the constitutional decisions of the splintered Rehnquist Court. Two of the recurring critiques have posited that the Justices are overly activist and that their opinions are needlessly confusing. American Lawyer's Stuart Taylor, for example, has decried both the "jurisprudential mess" of the Court's recent redistricting decisions' as well as the disturbing activism that Taylor believes marks each of the Equal Protection decisions of the 1995-96 Terman activism that has led him to wonder "whether there is any life at all left in the idea of judicial restraint."' Eva Rodriguez …

Experimental Study Of Performance Of Minimum Spanning Tree Algorithms, Alec Berenbaum Jan 1998

Experimental Study Of Performance Of Minimum Spanning Tree Algorithms, Alec Berenbaum

Theses

Throughout the study of various theories of algorithms much work has been done in the area of traversal and solving optimization problems on graphs. Some of this work includes studies of finding the Minimal-Cost Spanning Trees (MST) in directed and undirected connected graphs. Several algorithms have been developed for such task. These algorithms tend to differ in performance based on various factors, such as graph density, size of problem spaces, range of weights that can be assigned to the edges of the graphs, edge weight distributions, etc. The data structures used by an algorithm can have a significant impact on …

The American Bar Association And Federal Habeas Corpus, Larry Yackle Jan 1998

The American Bar Association And Federal Habeas Corpus, Larry Yackle

Faculty Scholarship

The ABA explains its proposed moratorium on capital punishment in part on the ground that recent decisions rendered by the Supreme Court and legislation enacted by Congress limit the ability of prisoners under sentence of death to challenge their sentences in the federal courts.' According to the ABA, the Supreme Court has placed numerous hurdles in the path of prisoners who apply to the federal courts for a writ of habeas corpus, claiming that their convictions were obtained or their sentences were imposed in violation of federal law. Congress, for its part, has added even more barriers in Title I …

A Graphical Petri Nets Simulator, Shye-Chyun Huang

Theses

This thesis is an application software system (Graphical Petri Net simulator GPNS) providing a window-oriented, menu-driven and graphical interface simulator for Petri nets. This simulator is based on Place/Transition nets (PT-nets). It allows users to design and simulate PT-net under an interactive graphical environment. GPNS also provides a utility, Auxiliary Application Program (AAP), to make it more useful. When applying the AAP with the GPNS, each function in the AAP can be attached to a corresponding transition in the Petri net. Whenever an enabled transition in the Petri Net is fired will cause the corresponding function in the AAP to …

Resurrecting The Dodo: The Unfortunate Re-Emergence Of The Puffery Defense In Private Securities Actions, Jennifer O'Hare

Faculty Publications

The conventional wisdom is that the puffery defense is inapplicable in securities regulation. However, appellate courts in almost every federal circuit have recently used the puffery defense to dismiss private securities fraud actions that were based on vague statements of corporate optimism. This Article demonstrates that the courts have misused the puffery defense and have improperly insulated companies from liability for their misrepresentations. It contends that the assumptions justifying the use of the puffery defense are not present in securities transactions and that the federal securities laws have expressly rejected the very doctrine underlying the puffery defense-caveat emptor. Arguing that …

Functus Officio: Does The Doctrine Apply In Labor Arbitration - Teamsters Local 312 V. Matlack, Inc., Amy Markel

Journal of Dispute Resolution

The doctrine of functus officio was developed at common law in response to concerns about the "solemnity of judgments" and the effect of outside influences on arbitrators' decisions.2 Although not strictly applied in arbitration that is conducted pursuant to the Labor Management Relations Act,3 the doctrine of functus officio prevents an arbitrator from vacating, modifying, supplementing, or correcting his award . Most courts recognize three narrow exceptions to the doctrine which allow an arbitrator to revisit his award under limited circumstances. This Note examines the application of the "clarification exception" to the doctrine in a labor dispute setting and outlines …

Human Cloning: A Choice Or An Echo, George J. Annas Jan 1998

Human Cloning: A Choice Or An Echo, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

The chant is "cloning, cloning, cloning"; but the echo is "choice, choice, choice." From all the hoopla about human cloning as a human choice it would seem that cloning must be the most important scientific issue of our age. My intent in this Commentary is not to join this chorus, but to take advantage of cloning's high visibility to explore the nature of the choice it offers. What is it that makes human cloning at once so appealing to a few and so repulsive to most? The answer, I think, can be found in Roman mythology: Cloning recalls Ovid's myth …

A National Bill Of Patients' Rights, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

In one of the most enthusiastically received proposals in his January State of the Union address, President Bill Clinton called on Congress to enact a national bill of rights in health care. The President said, “You have the right to know all your medical options, not just the cheapest. You have the right to choose the doctor you want for the care you need. You have the right to emergency room care, wherever and whenever you need it. You have the right to keep your medical records confidential.”

Protecting Patients From Discrimination: The Americans With Disabilities Act And Hiv Infection, George J. Annas Jan 1998

Protecting Patients From Discrimination: The Americans With Disabilities Act And Hiv Infection, George J. Annas

Faculty Scholarship

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) was passed in 1990 to expand the reach of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and make discrimination on the basis of disability unlawful. The wheelchair symbol has become a universal sign of disability, but there are, of course, many types of disability that have been the basis of discrimination over the years, including blindness, deafness, epilepsy, cancer, heart disease, and mental retardation. AIDS is a disability under the ADA, and most commentators have assumed that infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) also qualifies as a disability under this act. It was not, however, …
