Promoting Inference-Making In A First Grade Classroom, Susan E. Flater Jan 1998

Promoting Inference-Making In A First Grade Classroom, Susan E. Flater

Graduate Research Papers

School-age children throughout their life experiences make inferences. Teachers can offer instruction and modeling in inference-making and opportunities for children to make inferences. As a result, children can become accustomed to bringing their prior knowledge to reading experiences, thus extending their thinking-language abilities.

Lawyers' Identities, Client Selection And The Antidiscrimination Principle: Thoughts On The Sanctioning Of Judith Nathanson, Bruce K. Miller Jan 1998

Lawyers' Identities, Client Selection And The Antidiscrimination Principle: Thoughts On The Sanctioning Of Judith Nathanson, Bruce K. Miller

Faculty Scholarship

The Author discusses how the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination might justifiably apply the Public Accommodations Statute to the client selection practices of some, perhaps many, lawyers. But it should leave Judith Nathanson alone. Nathanson's decision to represent only women in divorce cases is protected by the First Amendment, not because she is entitled as a lawyer to indulge whatever biases she chooses in her selection of clients, but because, as a lawyer of integrity who has melded her personal values and professional skills in service to the profession's best ideals, she is entitled to represent her chosen clients as she …

Next, the risk analysis and evaluation process was reviewed. After that, methods of …

Integrating Writing Across The Curriculum Enables Special Needs Students To Become Writers, Gretchen Peterson-Kobriger Jan 1998

Integrating Writing Across The Curriculum Enables Special Needs Students To Become Writers, Gretchen Peterson-Kobriger

Graduate Research Papers

Elementary students with language and learning disabilities became independent writers and readers after the classroom instruction changed from a teacher directed, segmented, skill deficit approach which is typically found in special education classrooms to a classroom which embraced whole language philosophies and provided students with the necessary conditions for learning written language. This paper describes the specific changes in teaching philosophy, instructional practices, methods, and strategies which were implemented in my classroom. It demonstrates how individual student challenges were met which enabled the students to increase their self-esteem and awareness of themselves as writers.

Biomineralization Of Magnetic Iron Minerals In Bacteria, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Dirk Schϋler Jan 1998

Biomineralization Of Magnetic Iron Minerals In Bacteria, Richard B. Frankel, Dennis A. Bazylinski, Dirk Schϋler

Physics

Magnetotactic bacteria orient and migrate along magnetic field lines. This ability is based on a submicron assembly of single-magnetic domain iron mineral particles that elegantly solves the problem of how to construct a magnetic dipole that is large enough to be oriented in the geomagnetic field at ambient temperature, yet fit inside a micron-sized cell. The solution is based on the ability of the bacteria to accumulate high concentrations of iron, and control the deposition, size and orientation of a specific iron mineral at specific locations in the cell.

Did The Civil Justice Reform Act Of 1990 Actually Expire?, Carl W. Tobias Jan 1998

Did The Civil Justice Reform Act Of 1990 Actually Expire?, Carl W. Tobias

Law Faculty Publications

The Civil Justice Reform Act of 1990 (CJRA) was intended to reduce the expense and delay associated with federal district court litigation by requiring courts to study and adopt new procedures. The CJR.lrs gains, however, may be erased by the uncertainty surrounding its sunset provision. Professor Tobias argues that Congress or the Judicial Conference should resolve the uncertainty by proclaiming that the CJRA has expired, thus forcing districts to abrogate procedures inconsistent with the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.

The Sources And Scope Of Federal Procedural Common Law: Some Reflections On Erie And Gasperini, Wendy Collins Perdue Jan 1998

The Sources And Scope Of Federal Procedural Common Law: Some Reflections On Erie And Gasperini, Wendy Collins Perdue

Law Faculty Publications

In this Essay I explore what traditional Erie cases would look like if we treated those cases just like classic federal common law cases. I conclude that such an approach is consistent with Erie itself and is also consistent with many of the holdings, if not the language, of traditional Erie cases. This unified approach to substantive and procedural federal common law might have some advantages. In addition to providing conceptual uniformity, this approach would offer an escape from current Erie doctrine, which is confused and unsatisfactory. Under the current doctrine, the Court appears to vacillate between the balancing test …

A Case Of "Loving Hate", Michelle C. Loris Jan 1998

A Case Of "Loving Hate", Michelle C. Loris

Psychology Faculty Publications

The case, "Loving Hate," clarifies the complicated dynamics of the eroticization of hate. These dynamics were forged for the adult sexual abuse survivor in the early abusive relationship where love was always accompanied by hate. In the therapeutic relationship, these dynamics are reenacted and experienced in the countertransference where the therapist feels the patient's unconscious pressure to turn this relationship into a kind of "hating mating." This case vignette is used to illustrate how the therapist's countertransference impasse impeded treatment. Explanation and analysis are offered in this case to suggest how by using the paradigm of Abuser, Victim, Bystander to …

Adenosine 3', 5'-Cyclic Monophosphate Activation Of Islet Chloride Channels, Anjali Varandani Jan 1998

Adenosine 3', 5'-Cyclic Monophosphate Activation Of Islet Chloride Channels, Anjali Varandani

Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this thesis was to understand the regulation of islet Cl⁻ current by cAMP. This current, known as Icl,islet flew is the first Cl⁻ channel current characterized in pancreatic cells. Icl,islet has been hypothesized to modulate insulin secretion through changes in islet electrical activity. Both 5 M forskolin and 100 M IBMX (3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine), agents that increase intracellular cAMP, were shown to activate an outwardly-rectifying ionic current in HIT cells that closely resembled Icl,islet. The current was blocked when iodide was substituted for external Cl⁻ or when the Cl⁻ channel blocker niflumic acid was …
