Kuhn argues that a paradigm generally emerges from among such competing schools as the result of a particularly attractive or powerful accomplishment that places one school in a better position than the others. With the establishment and common acceptance of one particular theoretical structure, researchers can direct their observations and experiments in accordance with the ontological and methodological landscape provided by the agreed upon paradigm. Under such guidance, scientists are in a position to judge the value of various observations, and delineate between important lines of investigation and those without promise. Thus normal science, in contrast to its "immature" precursor, …

On the day of the accident the deminers started work at 07:45. The victim was working without a partner [whose absence was unexplained]. After finding many pieces of metal, he ignored other detector signals, moved in front of his end-of-lane marker and knelt to remove the forks from a bicycle. He should have finished his "shift" at 08:15 but at 08:19 he was putting the scrap metal to one side when his heel activated a PPM-2 mine that was 40cm "behind" his end-of-lane marker. He suffered the "loss" of both lower limbs, received lacerations to both arms and was penetrated …

SEQRA, the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act, creates a process whereby public actions are reviewed with the intent to mitigate the adverse environmental impacts of those actions. Recently decided New York case law has created flexibility in the SEQRA process by allowing developers, among others, to revamp proposed projects early in the application process in order to expedite SEQRA and save substantial amounts of money. A New York court held that using public meetings to garner information and negotiate different aspects of a proposed project, and a determination of a negative declaration (the proposed project will have no …

Flux Measurements And Sampling Strategies: Applications To Methane Emissions From Rice Fields, M. A. K. Khalil, R. A. Rasmussen, Martha J. Shearer Oct 1998

Flux Measurements And Sampling Strategies: Applications To Methane Emissions From Rice Fields, M. A. K. Khalil, R. A. Rasmussen, Martha J. Shearer

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The emissions of methane from rice fields and other sources are often measured by placing chambers on the surface and taking sequential samples. Although static chambers pose several problems that affect the accuracy of the data, there are a few parameters that, if carefully chosen, can improve the reliability of the data and reduce the uncertainties. These parameters are the length of time the chamber is kept on the rice plants, the number of samples that are drawn to estimate the flux, the basal area and height of the chamber, the frequency of measurements during the growing season, and the …

Chimeric Isoprenoid Synthases And Uses Thereof, Joseph Chappell, Kyoungwhan Back Oct 1998

Chimeric Isoprenoid Synthases And Uses Thereof, Joseph Chappell, Kyoungwhan Back

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Patents

Disclosed is a chimeric isoprenoid synthase polypeptide including a first domain from a first isoprenoid synthase joined to a second domain from a second, heterologous isoprenoid synthase, whereby the chimeric isoprenoid synthase is capable of catalyzing the production of isoprenoid reaction products that are not produced in the absence of the second domain of the second, heterologous isoprenoid synthase. Also disclosed is a chimeric isoprenoid synthase polypeptide including an assymetrically positioned homologous domain, whereby the chimeric isoprenoid synthase is capable of catalyzing the production of isoprenoid reaction products that are not produced when the domain is positioned at its naturally-occurring …
