Accurate Classification Of Juvenile Weakfish Cynoscion Regalis To Estuarine Nursery Areas Based On Chemical Signatures In Otoliths, Simon R. Thorrold, Cynthia M. Jones, Peter K. Swart, Timothy E. Targett

OES Faculty Publications

We investigated the ability of trace element and isotopic signatures in otoliths to record the nursery areas of juvenile (young-of-the-year) weakfish Cynoscion regalis from the east coast of the USA. Juvenile C. regalis were captured with otter trawls at multiple sites in Doboy Sound (Georgia), Pamlico Sound (North Carolina), Chesapeake Bay (Virginia), Delaware Bay (Delaware) and Peconic Bay (New York), from July to September 1996. One sagittal otolith from each specimen was assayed for Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca, Sr/Ca and Ba/Ca ratios using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS), while delta 13 C and delta 18 O values from the other sagittal …

A Randomized Trial Of The Use Of Print Material And Personal Contact To Improve Mammography Uptake Among Screening Non-Attenders In Singapore, Paulin Tay Straughan, Paulin Tay Straughan, E. H. Ng, H. P. Lee Nov 1998

A Randomized Trial Of The Use Of Print Material And Personal Contact To Improve Mammography Uptake Among Screening Non-Attenders In Singapore, Paulin Tay Straughan, Paulin Tay Straughan, E. H. Ng, H. P. Lee

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

The Singapore Breast Screening Project was a nationwide study inviting a random sample of women between the ages of 50 and 64 years for mammography at one of two hospital-based screening centres over two years. The current study was undertaken to determine if (1) mailed health educational material alone, or (2) the same material delivered during a home visit made to the subject and her family would increase the uptake among Singapore women who had not responded to two previous invitations for mammographic screening as part of the Project. This randomized trial employed a standard second reminder letter (R), the …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the experience of five faculty from four universities who are co-developing and team teaching courses using the world-wide web (WWW). In particular two novel power engineering courses, Flexible Control of Transmission Systems and Flexible Control of Distribuction Systems, introduce the student to the application of power electronic-based controllers, known specifically as flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) controllers, to enhance the performance of the transmission and distribution systems in an electric power system. In order to leverage faculty expertise in the various topics included in each course, a unique partnership was formed among five faculty from the following …

Test Of Variables Of Attention (Tova) Utility In Differentiating Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Subtypes, Steven Andrew Westby Nov 1998

Test Of Variables Of Attention (Tova) Utility In Differentiating Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Subtypes, Steven Andrew Westby

Theses and Dissertations

Research has indicated that Continuous Performance Tests (CPTs) can differentiate Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity (ADHD) subjects from controls without any psychiatric illness. However, CPTs have neither accurately differentiated ADHD children from those with other psychiatric disorders—nor differentiated subtypes of ADHD from each other. The Test of Variables of Attention (TOVA), a new CPT, has several advantages over its predecessors which may allow the TOVA to be more effective in this differentiation process.

Data from ADHD subjects was selected from children who were administered the TOVA as part of their evaluation for ADHD at Lakeland Mental Health Center in Moorhead, MN, the Child Evaluation …

Evaluating Density Forecasts With Applications To Financial Risk Management, Francis X. Diebold, Todd A. Gunther, Anthony S. Tay Nov 1998

Evaluating Density Forecasts With Applications To Financial Risk Management, Francis X. Diebold, Todd A. Gunther, Anthony S. Tay

Research Collection School Of Economics

We propose methods for evaluating density forecasts. We focus primarily on methods that are applicable regardless of the particular user’s loss function. We illustrate the methods with a detailed simulation example, and then we present an application to density forecasting of daily stock market returns. We discuss extensions for improving suboptimal density forecasts, multi-step-ahead density forecast evaluation, multivariate density forecast evaluation, monitoring for structural change and its relationship to density forecasting, and density forecast evaluation with known loss function.

A Global Object Model For Accommodating Instance Heterogeneities, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang Nov 1998

A Global Object Model For Accommodating Instance Heterogeneities, Ee Peng Lim, Roger Hsiang-Li Chiang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

To completely address database integration problems in the context of multidatabase [10] and data warehousing systems, one has to examine various integration and query requirements. Due to various reasons such as poor data quality in local databases, ongoing local database updates, and instance heterogeneities, some instance differences have to be accommodated by the integrated databases. We have therefore proposed a new object-oriented global data model, called OORA, that can accommodate attribute and relationship instance heterogeneities in the integrated database. In addition, the OORA model has been designed to allow database integrators and end users to query both the local and …

Punitive Damages And The Economic Theory Of Penalties, Keith N. Hylton Nov 1998

Punitive Damages And The Economic Theory Of Penalties, Keith N. Hylton

Faculty Scholarship

Deterrence has long been considered one of the most important goals of both tort law and criminal law. However, there are different notions of deterrence advanced in the literature in these areas. The traditional notion of deterrence in the criminal punishment literature is one of "complete deterrence," of stopping offenders from committing offensive acts. Generally, complete deterrence is accomplished by eliminating the prospect of gain on the part of the offender. The alternative, more recent notion of deterrence, largely observed in the torts literature, is that of "appropriate or optimal deterrence," which implies deterring offensive conduct only up to the …

Inertia And Preference In Contract Negotiation: The Psychological Power Of Default Rules And Form Terms, Russell Korobkin Nov 1998

Inertia And Preference In Contract Negotiation: The Psychological Power Of Default Rules And Form Terms, Russell Korobkin

Vanderbilt Law Review

In The Problem of Social Cost,' the foundational article of the law and economics movement, Ronald Coase suggested that when transaction costs are zero, the initial allocation of a legal entitlement is irrelevant to its eventual ownership. Assuming no transaction costs, the Coase Theorem predicts that if party A values an entitlement more than does party B, A will keep the entitlement if it is initially allocated to him, and he will buy it if it is originally allocated to B. This powerful insight depends on the behavioral assumption that an individual's valuation of entitlements does not depend on ownership; …

Behavioral Economics, The Economic Analysis Of Bankruptcy Law And The Pricing Of Credit, Robert K. Rasmussen Nov 1998

Behavioral Economics, The Economic Analysis Of Bankruptcy Law And The Pricing Of Credit, Robert K. Rasmussen

Vanderbilt Law Review

Bankruptcy has been a fertile ground for the economic analysis of law. A significant portion of bankruptcy scholarship during the past fifteen years applies the basic assumptions of standard economic theory to the problems caused by financial distress. This scholarship begins with the premise that people make choices in a rational manner in order to maximize their individual utility. It applies this axiom to questions ranging from when do individuals file for bankruptcy to how bankruptcy laws affect firms' investment decisions. As it has in most other areas of law (especially private law), law and economics has both reshaped our …

Can There Be A Behavioral Law And Economics?, Samuel Issacharoff Nov 1998

Can There Be A Behavioral Law And Economics?, Samuel Issacharoff

Vanderbilt Law Review

The emergence of the modern law and economics analysis generally is dated to the early 1960s with the publication of seminal work by Ronald Coase' and subsequently by Guido Calabresi and Douglas Melamed. These articles laid the foundation for the relation between legal rules, wealth maximization, and transaction costs, which provided the pivotal application of economic analysis to legal problems. However, the current sweep of law and economics would have been inconceivable without Gary Becker's insight into the application of neoclassical comparisons of marginal utility to the stuff of everyday life. Becker's analysis of routine decision making in terms of …

The Growing Pains Of Behavioral Law And Economics, Thomas S. Ulen Nov 1998

The Growing Pains Of Behavioral Law And Economics, Thomas S. Ulen

Vanderbilt Law Review

We are at the beginning of behavioral law and economics. We now see only dimly the outlines of the elaborate theory of decision making that is to come. We are like the independent scholars who examined the various parts of a very large animal and then tried to put together their reports to describe that animal; we each have bits and pieces of the elephant but no clear image of the entire beast. But we should not despair. We must remember that this behavioralist discipline is, as scholarly developments go, young. Indeed, the conventional law and economics model, to which …

Comment: The Future Of Behavioral Economic Analysis Of Law, Jennifer Arlen Nov 1998

Comment: The Future Of Behavioral Economic Analysis Of Law, Jennifer Arlen

Vanderbilt Law Review

Behavioral economic analysis of law presents an important challenge to conventional law and economics, strengthened in part by the fact that conventional law and economics is itself a behavioral approach to law. Indeed, conventional law and economics can be viewed as the first widely-adopted behavioral approach to law. A central contribution of Ronald Coase's pathbreaking article was the claim that one cannot determine the effect of a law by simply looking at the law itself--at the conduct the law requires. Instead, one must determine how people will respond to the law.' Legal rules, he argued, do not dictate behavior-they simply …

Formulating A Service Recovery Package For The Airline Industry In Taiwan, Yung-Shine Yang Nov 1998

Formulating A Service Recovery Package For The Airline Industry In Taiwan, Yung-Shine Yang

Theses

Stated simply, the service sector is an industry with respect to human being. Nearly each service transaction must be involved with people, including both consumers and frontline employees. This means that in a service firm, customers as well as frontline employees should be regarded as the most invaluable assets. Unfortunately, in Taiwan nowadays numerous service organizations such as certain airlines always lay special emphasis on stockholders' interests instead of clients' benefits. Maybe this can help explain why some service busine e has the inability to do th1ngs right the second time while they sometimes do things wrong the first time. …

Putting Rational Actors In Their Place: Economics And Phenomenology, Edward L. Rubin Nov 1998

Putting Rational Actors In Their Place: Economics And Phenomenology, Edward L. Rubin

Vanderbilt Law Review

The model of human behavior that is used in microeconomics is both normative and descriptive. As a normative model, it is an historical successor to the medieval concept of grace and the Renaissance concept of virtue. As a descriptive model, it is a theory of human psychology. Economists tend to deemphasize this point be- cause psychology is a notoriously "soft" science, and economists aspire to the "hard" sciences' precision. Nonetheless, any model that states the way human beings behave under specified circumstances is necessarily a theory of the way the human mind functions, and thus be- longs in the category …

Development Of A Discrete Ordinates Code System For Unstructured Meshes Of Tetrahedral Cells, With Serial And Parallel Implementations, Rodney L. Miller Nov 1998

Development Of A Discrete Ordinates Code System For Unstructured Meshes Of Tetrahedral Cells, With Serial And Parallel Implementations, Rodney L. Miller

Theses and Dissertations

A numerically stable, accurate, and robust form of the exponential characteristic (EC) method, used to solve the time-independent linearized Boltzmann Transport Equation, is derived using direct affine coordinate transformations on unstructured meshes of tetrahedra. This quadrature, as well as the linear characteristic (LC) spatial quadrature, is implemented in our transport code, called TETRAN. This code solves multi-group neutral particle transport problems with anisotropic scattering and was parallelized using High Performance Fortran and angular domain decomposition. A new, parallel algorithm for updating the scattering source is introduced. The EC source and inflow flux coefficients are efficiently evaluated using Broyden's rootsolver, started …

The Politics Of Implementation: Oregon's Statewide Transportation Planning Rule - What's Been Accomplished, Martha J. Bianco, Sy Adler Nov 1998

The Politics Of Implementation: Oregon's Statewide Transportation Planning Rule - What's Been Accomplished, Martha J. Bianco, Sy Adler

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

This paper is a case study of the evolution of Oregon’s groundbreaking Transportation Planning Rule, from its adoption in 1991, up through present amendments. Our analysis is an assessment of how private- and public-sector investors grapple with the coproduction of the built environment under the constraints of a value system that emanates from the state, shepherded by litigious public interest groups. In this case, this value system is articulated in the Oregon administrative rule known as the Transportation Planning Rule. This Rule emphasizes a reduction in the reliance on automobiles and, among other things, requires a decrease in vehicle miles …

The Connection Between Public Transit And Employment, Thomas W. Sanchez Nov 1998

The Connection Between Public Transit And Employment, Thomas W. Sanchez

Center for Urban Studies Publications and Reports

Even with a considerable amount of attention being paid to the role of public transportation in addressing inner-city mobility problems, there is very little evidence of the degree to which one affects the other. In other words, little research has specifically focused on how labor participation is impacted by increases in public transportation availability. Research on the spatial mismatch hypothesis has dealt with the relationship between labor participation and the spatial separation of jobs and houses; however, most analyses concentrate on commuting time or distance as a function of auto accessibility. Few, if any, studies have considered the relative impacts …

Our Transportation Crisis: Who Will Pay? Iistps, Report M-00-1, Mineta Transportation Institute

Mineta Transportation Institute

The purpose of this forum, which was held on November 17, 1998, was to explore ways to fund transportation and mass transit improvements. Co-sponsored by the Norman Y. Mineta International Institute for Surface Transportation Studies, the Silicon Valley Chapter of the Commonwealth Club, the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group, and the San Francisco Bay Area Metropolitan Transportation Committee, the forum dealt specifically with methods of funding transportation improvements. The traditional way of funding California’s highway system, the gas tax, will soon be unable to keep up with the necessary maintenance and expansion Silicon Valley will require to maintain its status as …

Do Interactions Increase Or Reduce The Conductance Of Disordered Electrons? It Depends!, Thomas Vojta, Frank Epperlein, Michael Schreiber

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We investigate the influence of electron-electron interactions on the conductance of two-dimensional disordered spinless electrons. We present an efficient numerical method based on diagonalization in a truncated basis of Hartree-Fock states to determine with high accuracy the low-energy properties in the entire parameter space. We find that weak interactions increase the dc conductance in the strongly localized regime while they decrease the dc conductance for weak disorder. Strong interactions always decrease the conductance. We also study the localization of single-particle excitations at the Fermi energy which turns out to be only weakly influenced by the interactions.
