Regulation Of Connexin43 By Phosphorylation In Heart Development, John C. Duncan Sep 1998

Regulation Of Connexin43 By Phosphorylation In Heart Development, John C. Duncan

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Serine/threonine protein kinases have been shown to reversibly regulate cell-cell communication through gap junctions formed by connexin 43 (Cx43) (Godwin et al.7 1993). The Cx43 protein expression levels are unclear and what role phosphorylation plays in the regulation of signal transduction through these gap junctions during heart formation. Reportedly, mutations which replace potentially phosphorylatable serines within the Cx43 protein are associated with heart malformations (Britz-Cunningham et al.. 1995), highlighting the importance of determining the levels of Cx43 and the activities of PKA and PKC during heart development.

Western analysis performed on hearts from developmentally significant time points revealed principally high …

Undergraduates Arguing A Case, Susheela A. Varghese, Sunita A. Abraham Sep 1998

Undergraduates Arguing A Case, Susheela A. Varghese, Sunita A. Abraham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This essay describes an instructional study in which students were trained in two key aspects of argumentation, namely, the structural and interpersonal components. The structural aspects were taught and measured in terms of Toulmin's (1958) framework of argument analysis (i.e., the quality of claims, grounds and warrants used). The interpersonal aspects in turn were measured in terms of the creation of a clear persona, audience adaptiveness (the appropriate use of rational and emotional appeals), and stance towards the unique discourse of argumentation. Students performed a pre-instruction writing task, underwent eight weeks of explicit instruction in argumentation, then performed the task …

The Feasibility Of Launching Small Satellites With A Light Gas Gun, H. Gilreath, A. Driesman, W. Kroshl, M. White, H. Cartland, J. Hunter Aug 1998

The Feasibility Of Launching Small Satellites With A Light Gas Gun, H. Gilreath, A. Driesman, W. Kroshl, M. White, H. Cartland, J. Hunter

Small Satellite Conference

This paper summarizes a study conducted for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency of the technical and economic feasibility of using a light gas gun to launch small satellites. The launcher concept is based upon a distributed-injection gun, which, in principle, can produce high muzzle velocities at relatively low acceleration levels. To establish initial system requirements for the launcher and spacecraft, the deployment of a large constellation of telecommunications satellites is chosen as a reference mission. This choice reflects the dominance of telecommunications in current commercial LEO market projections, but the results obtained for this mission are later generalized to …

Development Of A Satellite Beacon Receiving Station, Carlos Niederstrasser

Small Satellite Conference

As part of its space operations research program, Stanford University's Space Systems Development Laboratory (SSDL) is implementing an automated state of health assessment and notification system for spacecraft. On board the spacecraft, this system consists of software that filters telemetry to derive a health assessment and a periodic beacon that broadcasts this assessment to the Earth. Throughout the world, a network of low cost receiving stations receive the beacon signal and relay it to a central mission control center via the Internet. This paper addresses the design and development of a beacon receiving station. Each station is designed to be …

Opus: A Flexible Pipeline Data Processing Environment, Daryl Swade, James Rose Aug 1998

Opus: A Flexible Pipeline Data Processing Environment, Daryl Swade, James Rose

Small Satellite Conference

OPUS is the automated pipeline processing environment developed at the Space Telescope Science Institute to handle the hundreds of exposures taken by the Hubble Space Telescope each day. This environment, however, is sufficiently generic to be applied to projects as diverse as large X-ray data reduction systems to small low-volume programs with an interest in "lights-out" operations. OPUS is briefly described in this paper which discusses its components, its applications, and its distribution. The OPUS baseline system is now available on CD-ROM for other projects to apply to their own pipeline requirements.

Vhf-Band Interference Avoidance For Next-Generation Small Satellites, J. Paffett, T.G. Jeans, J. Ward Aug 1998

Vhf-Band Interference Avoidance For Next-Generation Small Satellites, J. Paffett, T.G. Jeans, J. Ward

Small Satellite Conference

The past decade has seen a dramatic increase in the number of satellites operating or proposing to operate within the VHF frequency band. Antennas, receivers and transmitters for both the ground and the space segment are readily available and inexpensive, whilst propagation conditions are very favourable. This allows communications to and from the satellite using low-cost omni-directional antenna based ground terminals. It is because of these attractions that many amateur and commercial satellites choose to operate within this band. Unfortunately, the attractions of the VHF band has also lead to one of its greatest disadvantages: overcrowding. Low Earth Orbit satellite …

An Integrated Payload Development And Operations System (Ipos) For Pi Class Missions, Gerald Murphy, Elaine Hansen Aug 1998

An Integrated Payload Development And Operations System (Ipos) For Pi Class Missions, Gerald Murphy, Elaine Hansen

Small Satellite Conference

The IPOS approach recognizes that the real problems in achieving schedule, cost, and science return for PI class missions can only be dealt with by re-examining the basic architecture of payload and satellite systems. We must re-evaluate how they are built, integrated and operated. Reducing integration time and risk, lowering operations cost while increasing science return are absolutely necessary for today's new, low cost, fast turn-around missions. IPOS is systems engineered to match an innovative architecture with both an implementation methodology and enabling technologies. These are designed with recognition of the pitfalls that have historically been problems in satellite/payload integration, …

Small Satellite Conference

This paper is devoted to the new technologies of antenna system miniaturization and those technology implementation in space telecommunication and Earth remote sensing systems - for spacecraft, ground terminals and stations. Nowadays, an ability to transmit data bulks, generated by onboard equipment, becomes one of the essential performance of satellite system specifications. The conventional ways to solve the said problem result in increase of the weight and sizes of an antenna system, increase of the requirements to a power supply system, decrease of the width of antenna pattern, etc. The backlog in the technology of planar (flat) phased antenna arrays …

A Resource Allocation Mechanism Based On Cost Function Synthesis In Complex Systems, Carlos C. Amaro Aug 1998

A Resource Allocation Mechanism Based On Cost Function Synthesis In Complex Systems, Carlos C. Amaro

Dissertations

While the management of resources in computer systems can greatly impact the usefulness and integrity of the system, finding an optimal solution to the management problem is unfortunately NP hard. Adding to the complexity, today's 'modern' systems - such as in multimedia, medical, and military systems - may be, and often are, comprised of interacting real and non-real-time components. In addition, these systems can be driven by a host of non-functional objectives – often differing not only in nature, importance, and form, but also in dimensional units and range, and themselves interacting in complex ways. We refer to systems exhibiting …

A Folder Organization Model For Information Systems : Exploring Its Architectural Expressive Power And Predicate-Based Filing, Simon Doong Aug 1998

A Folder Organization Model For Information Systems : Exploring Its Architectural Expressive Power And Predicate-Based Filing, Simon Doong

Dissertations

This dissertation presents an Internal Folder Organization (I-ORG) which supplements the architectural deficiencies of the existing model - the User Folder Organization (U-ORG), to electronically model a person's filing system in the modern office environment. An I-ORG folder organization gives a logical representation of how documents of the same or different kinds are related and grouped into folders based on predefined premises. Our model is represented by a Rooted Direct Acyclic Graph (RDAG). Each node in the graph represents a folder; and folders are related by "subfolder relationship" (for capturing the "and" relation) and "virtual-folder relationship" (for capturing the "or" …

A Graph Based Process Model Measurement Framework Using Scheduling Theory, Gary Guang-Li Mou Aug 1998

A Graph Based Process Model Measurement Framework Using Scheduling Theory, Gary Guang-Li Mou

Dissertations

Software development processes, as a means of ensuring software quality and productivity, have been widely accepted within the software development community; software process modeling, on the other hand, continues to be a subject of interest in the research community. Even with organizations that have achieved higher SEI maturity levels, processes are by and large described in documents and reinforced as guidelines or laws governing software development activities. The lack of industry-wide adaptation of software process modeling as part of development activities can be attributed to two major reasons: lack of forecast power in the (software) process modeling and lack of …

Automatic Analysis Of Electronic Drawings Using Neural Network, Yi Shi Aug 1998

Automatic Analysis Of Electronic Drawings Using Neural Network, Yi Shi

Dissertations

Neural network technique has been found to be a powerful tool in pattern recognition. It captures associations or discovers regularities with a set of patterns, where the types, number of variables or diversity of the data are very great, the relationships between variables are vaguely understood, or the relationships are difficult to describe adequately with conventional approaches.

In this dissertation, which is related to the research and the system design aiming at recognizing the digital gate symbols and characters in electronic drawings, we have proposed: (1) A modified Kohonen neural network with a shift-invariant capability in pattern recognition; (2) An …
