Positive Behavioral Support: Strategies For Teachers, Michael B. Ruef, Cindy Higgins, Barbara J.C. Glaeser, Marianne Patnode

Graduate Studies in Education

Positive behavioral support (PBS) is a comprehensive, research-based proactive approach to behavioral support that endeavors to generate comprehensive change for students with challenging behavior. It involves identifying the purpose of challenging behavior, teaching appropriate alternative responses that serve the same purpose as the challenging behavior, consistently rewarding positive behaviors and minimizing the rewards for challenging behavior, and minimizing the physiological, environmental, and curricular elements that trigger challenging behavior. Proven PBS strategies include altering the classroom environment, increasing predictability and scheduling, increasing choice making, adapting the curriculum, appreciating positive behaviors, and teaching replacement skills. Relevant sources for those interested in implementing …

Bowen Ratio Estimates Of Evapotranspiration For Tamarix Ramosissima Stands On The Virgin River In Southern Nevada, D. A. Devitt, Anna Sala, S. D. Smith, J. Cleverly, L. K. Shaulis, R. Hammett

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A Bowen ratio energy balance was conducted over a Tamarix ramosissima (saltcedar) stand growing in a riparian corridor along the Virgin River in southern Nevada, Measurements in two separate years were compared and contrasted on the basis of changes in growing conditions. In 1994, a drought year, record high temperatures, dry winds, and a falling water table caused partial wilt of outer smaller twigs in the canopy of many trees in the stand around the Bowen tower. Subsequently, evapotranspiration (ET) estimates declined dramatically over a 60-day period (11 mm d(-1) to <1 mm d(-1)). In 1995, the Virgin River at the Bowen tower area changed its course, hydrologically isolating the Tamarix stand in the vicinity of the tower. In 1996, a 25% canopy loss was visually estimated for the Tamarix growing in the area of the tower. Higher soil temperatures relative to air temperatures were recorded in 1996 in response to this loss in canopy, With a more open canopy, thermally induced turbulence was observed in 1996, On day 160 of 1996, a 28 degrees C rise over a 9-hour period was correlated with increased wind speeds of greater than 4 m s(-1). Subsequently, higher ET estimates were made in 1996 compared to 1994 (145 cm versus 75 cm), However, the energy balance was dominated by advection in 1996, with latent energy flux exceeding net radiation 65% of the measurement days compared to only 11% in 1994, We believe this advection was on a scale of the floodplain (hundreds of meters) as opposed to regional advection, since the majority of wind (90%) was in a N-S direction along the course of the river, and that a more open canopy allowed the horizontal transfer of energy into the Tamarix stand at the Bowen tower. Our results suggest that Tamarix has the potential to be both a low water user and a high water user, depending on moisture availability, canopy development, and atmospheric demand, and that advection can dominate energy balances and ET in aridland riparian zones such as the Virgin River.

Climate Change And Nebraska Sep 1998

Climate Change And Nebraska

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The earth’s climate is predicted to change because human activities are altering the chemical composition of the atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases — primarily carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, and chlorofluorocarbons. The heat-trapping property of these greenhouse gases is undisputed. Although there is uncertainty about exactly how and when the earth’s climate will respond to enhanced concentrations of greenhouse gases, observations indicate that detectable changes are under way. There most likely will be increases in temperature and changes in precipitation, soil moisture, and sea level, which could have adverse effects on many ecological systems, as well as on …

A Structural Result Of Irreducible Inclusions Of Type Iii Lambda Factors, Lambda Is An Element Of (0,1), Phan Loi

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

Given an irreducible inclusion of factors with finite index N ⊂ M, where M is of type IIIλ1/m, N of type IIIλ1/n, 0 < λ < 1, and m,n are relatively prime positive integers, we will prove that if N ⊂ M satisfies a commuting square condition, then its structure can be characterized by using fixed point algebras and crossed products of automorphisms acting on the middle inclusion of factors associated with N ⊂ M. Relations between N ⊂ M and a certain G-kernel on subfactors are also discussed.

Optimizing Amplifier Placements In A Multiwavelength Optical Lan/Man: The Equally Powered-Wavelengths Case, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jason Iness, Biswanath Mukherjee Sep 1998

Optimizing Amplifier Placements In A Multiwavelength Optical Lan/Man: The Equally Powered-Wavelengths Case, Byrav Ramamurthy, Jason Iness, Biswanath Mukherjee

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) provides the ability to utilize the enormous bandwidth offered by optical networks, using today’s electronics. WDM-based optical networks employing passive-star couplers have been proposed for deployment in local and metropolitan areas. Optical amplification is often required in such networks to compensate for the signal attenuation along the fiber links and the splitting and coupling losses in the network. However, an optical amplifier has constraints on the maximum gain and the maximum output power it can supply; thus optical amplifier placement becomes a challenging problem. A simplifying assumption for analytical tractability requires that all wavelengths, present at …

The Problem Of Hipparcos Distances To Open Clusters. Ii. Constraints From Nearby Field Stars, David R. Soderblom, Jeremy R. King, Robert B. Hanson, Burton F. Jones, Debra Fischer, John R. Stauffer, Marc H. Pisonneault Sep 1998

The Problem Of Hipparcos Distances To Open Clusters. Ii. Constraints From Nearby Field Stars, David R. Soderblom, Jeremy R. King, Robert B. Hanson, Burton F. Jones, Debra Fischer, John R. Stauffer, Marc H. Pisonneault

Publications

This paper examines the discrepancy between distances to nearby open clusters as determined by parallaxes from Hipparcos compared to traditional main-sequence fitting. The biggest difference is seen for the Pleiades, and our hypothesis is that if the Hipparcos distance to the Pleiades is correct, then similar subluminous zero-age main-sequence (ZAMS) stars should exist elsewhere, including in the immediate solar neighborhood. We examine a color-magnitude diagram of very young and nearby solar-type stars and show that none of them lie below the traditional ZAMS, despite the fact that the Hipparcos Pleiades parallax would place its members 0.3 mag below that ZAMS. …

The Problem Of Hipparcos Distances To Open Clusters. I. Constraints From Multicolor Main-Sequence Fitting, Marc H. Pinsonneault, John Stauffer, David Soderblom, Jeremy R. King, Robert B. Hanson

Publications

Parallax data from the Hipparcos mission allow the direct distance to open clusters to be compared with the distance inferred from main-sequence (MS) Ðtting. There are surprising differences between the two distance measurements, indicating either the need for changes in the cluster compositions or reddening, underlying problems with the technique of MS Ðtting, or systematic errors in the Hipparcos parallaxes at the 1 mas level. We examine the di†erent possibilities, focusing on MS fitting in both metallicity-sensitive B[V and metallicity-insensitive V [I for five well-studied systems (the Hyades, Pleiades, a Per, Praesepe, and Coma Ber). The Hipparcos distances to the …

Nebraska's Economy Continues Strong Performance, Charles Lamphear Sep 1998

Nebraska's Economy Continues Strong Performance, Charles Lamphear

Business in Nebraska

Nebraska's economic momentum continued for another quarter by drawing strength from major sectors that include manufacturing, the FIRE group (finance, insurance, and real estate), retail trade, and services. However, some slowdown by the end of the year or early 1999 is likely as scattered weaknesses now being observed ripple through the rest of the economy. The overall impact is expected to be minimal.

Forty-six percent of all the businesses that participated in the latest Nebraska Quarterly Business Conditions Survey (NQBCS) indicted an increase in 2nd quarter 1998 revenues over year-ago levels (Table 1). Theeconomicsignificance of this latest report on …
