Market-Based Assets And Shareholder Value: A Framework For Analysis, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey Jan 1998

Market-Based Assets And Shareholder Value: A Framework For Analysis, Rajendra Kumar Srivastava, Tasadduq A. Shervani, Liam Fahey

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The authors develop a conceptual framework of the marketing-finance interface and discuss its implications for the theory and practice of marketing. The framework proposes that marketing is concerned with the task of developing and managing market-based assets, or assets that arise from the commingling of the firm with entities in its external environment. Examples of market-based assets include customer relationships, channel relationships, and partner relationships. Market-based assets, in turn, increase shareholder value by accelerating and enhancing cash flows, lowering the volatility and vulnerability of cash flows, and increasing the residual value of cash flows. The Relationship Between Student Characteristics And Math Achievement When Using Computer Spreadsheets., Jeanne Heindel Gasiorowski Jan 1998

The Relationship Between Student Characteristics And Math Achievement When Using Computer Spreadsheets., Jeanne Heindel Gasiorowski

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The use of computer hardware and software technology in schools is on the rise while there are increasing demands for success in mathematics by all students, despite diverse backgrounds. The problem is to determine the characteristics of students who most benefit from the use of spreadsheet software as a cognitive tool to assist them as they learn to organize and analyze data. For a period of six weeks, 114 seventh grade students received standard instruction in their mathematics classes in basic statistics/data analysis content. Concurrently, in a separate computer class, the students received instruction which focused on the use of …

Design Of Powered Supports For Longwall Mining., Jinsheng Chen Jan 1998

Design Of Powered Supports For Longwall Mining., Jinsheng Chen

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

For the purposes of production and safety, the roof exposed in the working area of a longwall face must be supported and protected. A hydraulic powered support with an improper structural design or insufficient capacity may result in roof failure or falls at the face, or its structural failure under intensive roof activity, while a heavier-than-required support can dramatically increase its cost. To ensure a safe and stable face condition at a minimum cost during the longwall retreat, the roof loading behavior above the face support, the structural stability and resultant loads of a hydraulic powered support under different mining …

Emotional Hijacking Versus Safe Behavior., Christopher Monteressi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This research investigated the types of reasoning used by coal mine employees when exposed to potentially dangerous situations. Information was gathered through interviews of coal miners who related actual experiences in the coal mines. The information in the interviews and in the review of the literature was used to develop and implement an experiential program that promoted an individual's responsibility for their safety and the safety of co-workers. The experiential program addressed safe work behaviors from the perspectives of emotional and cognitive memories and the functions of the human brain. This program had three overall objectives of assisting miners to …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The objective of this study was to examine the relationships between interactive television instructors' perceptions of students' nonverbal responsiveness and their perceptions of distance students, teaching effectiveness, teaching satisfaction, teacher-student interpersonal relationships, and their preferring to teach in the interactive television classroom versus the traditional face-to-face classroom. The sample included 157 interactive television instructors who currently teach or have recently taught in both the traditional face-to-face and interactive television classrooms. All participants were mailed two identical surveys. One was to be completed on students in the traditional face-to-face classroom and the other in the interactive television classroom. The surveys contained …

Online Education: The Effect Of Computer-Mediated Communication On Tutor-Tutee Interactions., April Terese Reed

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to examine the impacts of CMC on the interactions between teacher/tutors and students/tutees on a commercial Internet provider's educational service. Specifically, this study endeavored to discover if using CMC for tutoring purposes allowed both students/tutees and teachers/tutors to increase the tutee access to tutor expertise, judge content based solely on the merit of the message and to determine what types of educational strategies were used in this medium. The results of this study showed that students generally functioned at the lower levels of learning complexity; that is, they asked questions and received answers at …

A Manifold That Does Not Contain A Compact Core, Gerard A. Venema Jan 1998

A Manifold That Does Not Contain A Compact Core, Gerard A. Venema

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

A core of a (noncompact) manifold is a submanifold with the property that the inclusion of the submanifold into the manifold is a homotopy equivalence. It is shown by example that a manifold may fail to contain a compact core even though the manifold has the homotopy type of a finite complex.

Natural Law And The Ethics Of Discourse, John M. Finnis Jan 1998

Natural Law And The Ethics Of Discourse, John M. Finnis

Journal Articles

This essay argues that Plato's critical analysis of the ethics of discourse is superior to Habermas', and more generally that Habermas has no sufficient reason to propose or suppose the philosophical superiority of "modernity." The failure of Hume and Kant and much modern philosophy to understand the concept and content of reasons for action underlies Habermas' attempted distinction between ethics and morality, and Rawls' concept of public reason. A proper study of discourse also yields a metaphysics of the person, and thus reinforces the ethics.

Minority Protection And Section 181 Of The Companies Act 1965 / M. Athirathan, Athirathan M.

Pre-2000 Student Works

The present century has witnessed the immense growth and power of companies registered under the Companies Act. Investment in companies has increased by leaps and bounds and the number of persons holding shares in companies has increased tremendously. Many of these investors are minority shareholders who are vulnerable to oppression, discrimination and prejudicial conduct by the majority shareholders. Company Law, therefore, has a duty to ensure that the minority is adequately protected.

(Re)Envisioned (Pre)History: Feminism, Goddess Politics, And Readership Analysis Of The Clan Of The Cave Bear And The Valley Of The Horses, Glenna M. Andrade

Open Access Dissertations

Jean M. Auel's popular novels, The Clan of the Cave Bear and Valley of the Horses, are examined via theories of political thought (history, economics, power), feminist theory (oppression, sex/gender roles), and popular literature's (genre) appeals to various 80s readership communities. Chapter Two draws from historical interests in women's myth to show that 70-80s religious and anthropo-archeological revisionism promote an 80s goddess theory in support of 70- 80s feminism; nonetheless, from a 90s vantage, Dani-goddess theorizing is problematized by universalism, teleology, and gender stereotyping. Chapter Three examines Clan's politics, religion, gender roles and the pitfalls of mythmaking to Clan's …

Analogue Versus Authentic Data: Prereferral Intervention Strategy Utilization, Effectiveness And Self-Efficacy Beliefs, Mary Ellen K. Tillotson Jan 1998

Analogue Versus Authentic Data: Prereferral Intervention Strategy Utilization, Effectiveness And Self-Efficacy Beliefs, Mary Ellen K. Tillotson

Open Access Dissertations

A literature has formed which has historically utilized an analogue approach to the study of prereferral intervention use and perceptions of acceptability and effectiveness. This methodology, however, may lack ecological validity if variables that mediate intervention selection and perceived efficacy are not linked to research design. If analogue research is to remain viable, supporting evidence of the concordance of naturalistic findings is expected. The current study utilizes an analogue and concomitant authentic approach to study the equivalence of these methods. A sample of 345 special education referral forms served as authentic data. Ninety-seven elementary general and special education teachers responded …

Violence Desistance Among Battering Men: Existing Interventions And The Application Of The Transtheoretical Model Of Change, Deborah A. Levesque

Open Access Dissertations

This research examines the efficacy of existing interventions for battering men and assesses the applicability of the Transtheoretical Model of Change to the problem of violence desistance. In Chapter 1, separate meta-analyses of batterer treatment outcome studies relying on partner reports of recidivism (N=7) and official records (N=11) are conducted to assess treatment efficacy. A third analysis examines the overall rate of recidivism across studies that follow treatment completers (N=38). Results show that the effect of treatment is small at best and moderated largely by program, study, and publication variables. The overall rate of …

Adolescent Students With Behavior Disorders: Teacher's Current Referral Practices, Nancy Ruth Smith

Open Access Dissertations

This study combined qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate teachers' practices when referring adolescent males and females to special education under the behavior disorder classification. Sixteen teachers were interviewed for the qualitative study. It was found that: teachers refer more males than females to special education for having a behavior disorder; females are more likely to be referred to guidance counselor as a means of addressing emotional/behavioral concerns within the school setting; within the classroom males tend to demonstrate more externalizing behaviors and females more internalizing behaviors; and teachers tend to demonstrate more leniency with females in the discipline process. …
