The Study Of Circumannular Orbital Interactions In The Imine Derivatives Of 2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-Cyclobutanedione, Arati Naik
Theses
The title compounds possess unusual orbital interactions. A p-pi type interaction which incorporates both a transannular and circumannular component and a non-bonding circumannular interaction from the lone electron pairs on the opposite ends of the ring interacting via the ring carbon p-orbitals of proper symmetry. Variable temperature NMR was employed to examine the effect of the non-bonding interaction of inversion through nitrogen on the imine chromophore. A plot of In k vs 1/T allowed for the determination of Ea from the slope and the free energy of activation AG was calculated from the coalescence temperature. The magnitude of long range …
Can There Be A Behavioral Law And Economics?, Samuel Issacharoff
Can There Be A Behavioral Law And Economics?, Samuel Issacharoff
Vanderbilt Law Review
The emergence of the modern law and economics analysis generally is dated to the early 1960s with the publication of seminal work by Ronald Coase' and subsequently by Guido Calabresi and Douglas Melamed. These articles laid the foundation for the relation between legal rules, wealth maximization, and transaction costs, which provided the pivotal application of economic analysis to legal problems. However, the current sweep of law and economics would have been inconceivable without Gary Becker's insight into the application of neoclassical comparisons of marginal utility to the stuff of everyday life. Becker's analysis of routine decision making in terms of …
The Effects Of The Architectural Design, Replacement Algorithm, And Size Parameters Of Cache Memory In Uniprocessor Computer Systems, Eric Berzofsky
The Effects Of The Architectural Design, Replacement Algorithm, And Size Parameters Of Cache Memory In Uniprocessor Computer Systems, Eric Berzofsky
Theses
To investigate the effects of cache coherency on multiprocessors, it is helpful to first explore coherency issues within uniprocessors, working with a small part of a big problem instead of attacking the big problem from the start. This thesis will investigate the design and implementation of three different cache designs, varying the mapping strategy, replacement algorithm, and size parameters to determine the effects each have on the cache miss ratio, coherency, and average memory access time. VHDL is used to create software models of each cache design investigated, so that parameter values can be easily changed, and so that no …

Formulating A Service Recovery Package For The Airline Industry In Taiwan, Yung-Shine Yang
Theses
Stated simply, the service sector is an industry with respect to human being. Nearly each service transaction must be involved with people, including both consumers and frontline employees. This means that in a service firm, customers as well as frontline employees should be regarded as the most invaluable assets. Unfortunately, in Taiwan nowadays numerous service organizations such as certain airlines always lay special emphasis on stockholders' interests instead of clients' benefits. Maybe this can help explain why some service busine e has the inability to do th1ngs right the second time while they sometimes do things wrong the first time. …

The exoenzyme S regulon is a set of coordinately regulated virulence genes of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Proteins encoded by the regulon include a type III secretion and translocation apparatus, regulators of gene expression, and effector proteins. The effector proteins include two enzymes with ADP-ribosyltransferase activity (ExoS and ExoT) and an acute cytotoxin (ExoU). In this study, we identified ExoY as a fourth effector protein of the regulon. ExoY is homologous to the extracellular adenylate cyclases of Bordetella pertussis (CyaA) and Bacillus anthracis (EF). The homology among the three adenylate cyclases is limited to two short regions, one of which possesses an …

A Randomized Parallel Sorting Algorithm With An Experimental Study, D.R. Helman, D.A. Bader, J. Jájá
Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports
Previous schemes for sorting on general-purpose parallel machines have had to choose between poor load balancing and irregular communication or multiple rounds of all-to-all personalized communication. In this paper, we introduce a novel variation on sample sort which uses only two rounds of regular all-to-all personalized communication in a scheme that yields very good load balancing with virtually no overhead. Moreover, unlike previous variations, our algorithm efficiently handles the presence of duplicate values without the overhead of tagging each element with a unique identifier. This algorithm was implemented in SPLIT-C and run on a variety of platforms, including the Thinking …

A New Deterministic Parallel Sorting Algorithm With An Experimental Evaluation, D.R. Helman, D.A. Bader, J. Jájá
Electrical & Computer Engineering Technical Reports
We introduce a new deterministic parallel sorting algorithm for distributed memory machines based on the regular sampling approach. The algorithm uses only two rounds of regular all-to-all personalized communication in a scheme that yields very good load balancing with virtually no overhead. Moreover, unlike previous variations, our algorithm efficiently handles the presence of duplicate values without the overhead of tagging each element with a unique identifier. This algorithm was implemented in SPLIT-C and run on a variety of platforms, including the Thinking Machines CM-5, the IBM SP-2-WN, and the Cray Research T3D. We ran our code using widely different benchmarks …

Sample-Adaptive Coding Scheme (Sacs): A Structurally Constrained Vector Quantizer, Dong Sik Kim, Ness B. Shroff
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports
In this paper, we propose a novel feed-forward adaptive coding scheme called SACS (sample adaptive coding scheme) for the lossy compression of a discrete-time memoryless stationary source. SACS is based on a concept of adaptive quantization to the varying samples of the source and is very different from traditional adaptation techniques for non-stationary sources. SACS quantizes each solirce sample using a sequence of quantizers. Even when using scalar quantization in SACS, we can ach.ieve performance comparablse to vector quantization (with the complexity still of the order of scalar quantization). We also show tihat important lattice based vector quantizers can be …

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Management and Industrial Engineering courses is motivating students to learn and apply the quantitative and managerial aspects of the material. The aim of our educational methodology is to not only teach and reinforce the core principles of the disciplines, but to have students develop a set of skills that will make them competitive in the classroom and the workforce. Teaching is why a university exists. As a result, the objective of our instructional approach is to attract and retain dedicated students to the fields of Operations Management and Industrial Engineering and to keep those students competitive and in focus with …
