Expectations Formation And Inflation Persistence, J. A. Carlson, Neven Tomov Valev Jan 1998

Expectations Formation And Inflation Persistence, J. A. Carlson, Neven Tomov Valev

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

This paper studies the dynamics of inflation if monetary policy is transparent only to part of the population. We find that average long-run inflation decreases in the proportion of agents with naive expectations and, because of tradeoffs between speed of adjustment and long-run inflation, central banks prefer a higher proportion of agents who form informed expectations in high inflation periods but not so in lower inflation periods. We use survey data on expectations of inflation from Bulgaria collected at the time a currency board was introduced in that country to test for influences on the heterogeneity of expectations across agents.

International Integration And Growth: A Survey And Empirical Investigation, Jon D. Haveman, V. Lei, J. S. Netz

Purdue CIBER Working Papers

After surveying the theoretical and empirical work, we attempt a comprehensive assessment of different forms of international integration on growth. In particular, we consider the impact of trade, of inward foreign direct investment, of preferential treatment of less developed countries, and of membership in trade blocs.

Communicative Behaviors Of Toddlers With Very Low Birth Weight In Social Contexts, Colleen Mary Allen Jan 1998

Communicative Behaviors Of Toddlers With Very Low Birth Weight In Social Contexts, Colleen Mary Allen

Wayne State University Dissertations

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the social-communicative behaviors of toddlers born with Very Low Birth Weight (VLBW) in contexts of social interaction and communicative temptation. Nineteen toddlers with VLBW were compared to nineteen NBW toddlers on communicative means, communicative functions, reciprocity and social-affective signaling using the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales. The major findings of this research were: children with VLBW did not differ from NBW children in global measures of social and communicative functioning, children with VLBW were limited in highly specific areas of communication such as fine motor and articulatory coordination, children with VLBW did …

Glossolalia: An Ethnographic Study Of The Rhetorical Role Of Speaking In Tongues In The Creation Of The Pentecostal Religious Culture, Shaye Dillon Jan 1998

Glossolalia: An Ethnographic Study Of The Rhetorical Role Of Speaking In Tongues In The Creation Of The Pentecostal Religious Culture, Shaye Dillon

Wayne State University Dissertations

This study investigated, through ethnographic methodology, the individual and group experiences of glossolalia within a Pentecostal church. The study examined the discursive interactions and rhetorical impact of how this Pentecostal church gave meaning to the experience of glossolalia or speaking in tongues and the individual and group manifestations of those meanings. In addition to being the approach for gathering discourse and interview data, ethnographic methodology also helped reveal the socially constructed realities of Pentecostal believers. The study focused on the situated and accountable descriptions of Pentecostal believer's social world as it involved glossolalia; not to contest or predict that world, …

Searching For A Pragmatic Aesthetic: The Rhetorical Strategies Of Gansta Rappers -- Myths, Rituals, And Dramas Of An Outlaw Music, Ede Warner Jan 1998

Searching For A Pragmatic Aesthetic: The Rhetorical Strategies Of Gansta Rappers -- Myths, Rituals, And Dramas Of An Outlaw Music, Ede Warner

Wayne State University Dissertations

In a world where impoverished urban black youth are under attack from all political factions, rap music lies at the heart of their cultural epicenter. More specifically, Gangsta rap music has taken center stage, dominating the pop charts, moving from the streets of the ghetto to the homes of white suburbia. Studies of Gangsta rap messages and the politics of reception have facilitated the alienation of many youth from mainstream culture. Critics charge Gangsta rap focuses on violent, racist, misogynist lyrics and calls for the censorship, rejection and condemnation of this sub-genre abound. This exploration considers alternative communication perspectives which …

Ethical Responses To Organizational Crisis: Lessons From Three Successful Cases, Robert R. Ulmer Jan 1998

Ethical Responses To Organizational Crisis: Lessons From Three Successful Cases, Robert R. Ulmer

Wayne State University Dissertations

Present research lacks adequate examples of successful and ethical approaches to organizational crisis management. Much of this research determines the effectiveness of organization's post-crisis responses by examining obvious failures. This dissertation takes an alternative approach by examining ethical post-crisis communication through obvious successes. This study examined ethical responses by applying stakeholder concepts and ethical perspectives to the corporate discourse of Malden Mills, after a plant explosion, Schwan's Sales Enterprises, after a salmonella outbreak, and General Motors, in response to accusations by Dateline NBC about the safety of GM C/K trucks. The study suggests that ethical responses to organizational crises can …

Language Dependency In Parsing: Evidence From Monolingual And Bilingual Processing, Eva M. Fernández Jan 1998

Language Dependency In Parsing: Evidence From Monolingual And Bilingual Processing, Eva M. Fernández

Publications and Research

Language dependency in parsing results when the parsing strategies used by bilinguals depend on the language of the input, in the case that cross-linguistic differences in processing exist. If bilingual parsing is language independent, on the other hand, bilinguals will process all input using the same strategies---those of L1, those of L2, or an amalgamated or compromised set of L1 and L2 strategies. This discussion evaluates existing research on bilingual processing, regarding how well it addresses questions related to the language dependency issue, as well as recent research on cross-linguistic differences in parsing. As a preview into the future of …

Forage Yield And Quality Of Tall Wheatgrass Accessions In The Usda Germplasm Collection, Kenneth P. Vogel, Kenneth J. Moore Jan 1998

Forage Yield And Quality Of Tall Wheatgrass Accessions In The Usda Germplasm Collection, Kenneth P. Vogel, Kenneth J. Moore

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Tall wheatgrass [Thinopyrum ponticum (Podp.) Liu and Wang] is a cool-season bunchgrass from southern Europe and Asia Minor that is tolerant to saline or alkaline soils. The genetic base of tall wheatgrass cultivars is narrow. The lineages of four of the six cultivars of tall wheatgrass developed and released in the USA and Canada trace to a common accession, PI 98526. The objective of this study was to determine the extent of variation in the USDA collection of tall wheatgrass for forage quality, yield, and other agronomic traits. All available accessions of tall wheatgrass (n = 50) from the …
