Local Academic Knowledge Spillovers And The Concentration Of Economic Activity, Attila Varga Jan 1998

Local Academic Knowledge Spillovers And The Concentration Of Economic Activity, Attila Varga

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Agglomeration effects on the intensity of local knowledge spillovers from universities to high technology innovations are examined within the modified Griliches-Jaffe knowledge production function framework. Estimations are carried out at the level of US metropolitan areas. Concentration of high technology employment turns out to be the most important factor promoting local academic knowledge spillovers. It is found that a “critical mass” of agglomeration needs to be reached in order to expect substantial local economic effects of academic research spending.

Expressions Of Discontent In America: Regional And Temporal Aspects Of Third Party Governors And Gubernatorial Candidates, 1866-1996, Shannon Jones Jan 1998

Expressions Of Discontent In America: Regional And Temporal Aspects Of Third Party Governors And Gubernatorial Candidates, 1866-1996, Shannon Jones

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

Democrats and Republicans traditionally dominate elections in America. The main goal of this project lies in determining if support for third parties exists and if certain third party support patterns exist within the United States. This project examines gubernatorial elections beginning with 1866 and continuing through 1996. This research does demonstrate that third party support has definite patterns and characteristics. Certain third parties rise up and exist for definite periods of time. Eventually they lose their support or their cause loses its salience. However, it remains one huge cycle: prevalent parties appear, and then disappear, making way for other parties …

Federal Spending And Economic Growth In Appalachian Counties, F Carson Mencken Jan 1998

Federal Spending And Economic Growth In Appalachian Counties, F Carson Mencken

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

In this paper I use a model informed by key theories of regional processes, and I test three related hypotheses concerning the effects of different types of federal spending (public investment, defense, salaries/wages) on economic growth in the 399 Appalachian counties during recent business cycles. The analysis incorporates a maximum likelihood estimate spatial lag regression model and shows the federal public investment spending and defense spending exerted net positive effects on per capita income, civilian employment, and private nonfarm employment growth rates between 1983 and 1988. In addition, public investment spending had a positive relationship with percentage of earnings from …

The ultimate fate of the Universe, infinite expansion or a big crunch, can be determined by using the redshifts and distances of very distant supernovae to monitor changes in the expansion rate. We can now find large numbers of these distant supernovae, and measure their redshifts and apparent brightnesses; moreover, recent studies of nearby type Ia supernovae have shown how to determine their intrinsic luminosities- and therefore with their apparent brightnesses obtain their distances. The >50 distant supernovae discovered so far provide a record of changes in the expansion rate over the past several billion years. However, it is necessary …

The all-sky survey in high-energy gamma rays (E > 30 MeV) carried out by EGRET aboard the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory provides a unique opportunity to examine in detail the diffuse gamma-ray emission. The observed diffuse emission has a Galactic component arising from cosmic-ray interactions with the local interstellar gas and radiation, as well as an almost uniformly distributed component that is generally believed to originate outside the Galaxy. Through a careful study and removal of the Galactic diffuse emission, the flux, spectrum, and uniformity of the extragalactic emission are deduced. The analysis indicates that the extragalactic emission is well described …

Starburst-Like Dust Extinction In The Small Magellanic Cloud, Karl D. Gordon, Geoffrey C. Clayton Jan 1998

Starburst-Like Dust Extinction In The Small Magellanic Cloud, Karl D. Gordon, Geoffrey C. Clayton

Faculty Publications

The recent discovery that the ultraviolet (UV) dust extinction in starburst galaxies is similar to that found in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) motivated us to reinvestigate the UV extinction found in the SMC. We have been able to improve significantly on previous studies by carefully choosing pairs of well-matched reddened and unreddened stars. In addition, we benefited from the improved signal-tonoise ratio of the NEWSIPS International Ultraviolet Explorer (WE) data and the larger sample of SMC stars now available. Searching the WE Final Archive, we found only four suitable early-type stars that were significantly reddened and had well-matched comparison …

Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, B. A.O. Huiming, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple Jan 1998

Hematite And Calcite Coatings On Fossil Vertebrates, B. A.O. Huiming, Paul L. Koch, Robert P. Hepple

Faculty Publications

Hematite coatings are common on vertebrate fossils from Paleocene/Eocene paleosol deposits in the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming. In general, hematite coatings are found only on fossils and are limited to soils exhibiting hydromorphic features and moderate maturity. Pétrographie and isotopic evidence suggests that hematite and micritic calcite formed at nearly the same time in a pedogenic environment, whereas sparry calcite formed later at greater burial depths. The parent material of paleosols is rich in iron, supplying an ample source of iron for hematite formation. Decomposition of animal tissues around bones may enhance the weathering of iron-bearing minerals in soils surrounding carcasses, …

Identification Of A Class Of Chromatin Boundary Elements, Olivier Cuvier, Craig M. Hart, Ulrich K. Laemmli Jan 1998

Identification Of A Class Of Chromatin Boundary Elements, Olivier Cuvier, Craig M. Hart, Ulrich K. Laemmli

Faculty Publications

Boundary elements are thought to define the ends of functionally independent domains of genetic activity. An assay for boundary activity based on this concept measures the ability to insulate a bracketed, chromosomally integrated reporter gene from position effects. Despite their presumed importance, the few examples identified to date apparently do not share sequence motifs or DNA binding proteins. The Drosophila protein BEAF binds the scs' boundary element of the 87A7 hsp70 locus and roughly half of polytene chromosome interband loci. To see if these sites represent a class of boundary elements that have BEAF in common, we have isolated and …

Overt And Relational Aggression In Russian Nursery-School-Age Children: Parenting Style And Marital Linkages., C. H. Hart, D. A. Nelson, C. C. Robinson, S. F. Olsen, M. K. Mcneilly-Choque

Faculty Publications

Maternal and paternal parenting styles and marital interactions linked to childhood aggressive behavior as described in Western psychological literature were measured in an ethnic Russian sample of 207 families of nursery-school-age children. Results corroborated and extended findings from Western samples. Maternal and paternal coercion, lack of responsiveness, and psychological control (for mothers only) were significantly correlated with children's overt aggression with peers. Less responsiveness (for mothers and fathers) and maternal coercion positively correlated with relational aggression. Some of these associations differed for boys versus girls. Marital conflict was also linked to more overt and relational aggression for boys. When entered …

Emergence Of Western Diseases In The Tropical World: The Experience With Chronic Cardiovascular Diseases, Terrence Forrester, Richard S. Cooper, David Weatherall Jan 1998

Emergence Of Western Diseases In The Tropical World: The Experience With Chronic Cardiovascular Diseases, Terrence Forrester, Richard S. Cooper, David Weatherall

Faculty Publications

Our knowledge of the disease burden components of tropical populations is fragmentary. Historically, the infectious diseases have been emphasized but, as some populations have undergone socio-economic changes, vital statistics have described a change in the pattern of disease. The picture is of a decline in infectious and a rise in chronic non-communicable disease. We focus here on the emergence of chronic cardiovascular diseases, and use hypertension as the paradigmic example. Early blood pressure surveys showed a virtual absence of hypertension among rural Africans and moderate prevalences in the Caribbean. Prevalence was highest among US and UK blacks. In a recent …

Accelerated Degradation Tests: Modeling And Analysis, William Q. Meeker, Luis A. Escobar, C. Joseph Lu Jan 1998

Accelerated Degradation Tests: Modeling And Analysis, William Q. Meeker, Luis A. Escobar, C. Joseph Lu

Faculty Publications

High reliability systems generally require individual system components having extremely high reliability over long periods of time. Short product development times require reliability tests to be conducted with severe time constraints. Frequently few or no failures occur during such tests, even with acceleration. Thus, it is difficult to assess reliability with traditional life tests that record only failure times. For some components, degradation measures can be taken over time. A relationship between component failure and amount of degradation makes it possible to use degradation models and data to make inferences and predictions about a failure-time distribution. This article describes degradation …

Susceptibility Of Field Populations Of Beet Armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) To Commercial And Experimental Insecticides, V. J. Mascarenhas, J. B. Graves, B. R. Leonard, E. Burris Jan 1998

Susceptibility Of Field Populations Of Beet Armyworm (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) To Commercial And Experimental Insecticides, V. J. Mascarenhas, J. B. Graves, B. R. Leonard, E. Burris

Faculty Publications

Susceptibility of field-collected strains of beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hübner), to commercial and experimental insecticides was evaluated in a diet overlay bioassay by using 2-d-old larvae. Larvae were collected from cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., fields in Alabama, California, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas, and from Rio Bravo, Mexico. Several field strains exhibited reduced susceptibility to chlorpyrifos and thiodicarb, which are the only 2 labeled insecticides recommended for beet armyworm control in Louisiana. In chlorpyrifos bioassays, 7 of the 11 field strains had significantly higher LC50s than the reference strain from the Southern Insect Management Laboratory at Stoneville, MS. In thiodicarb bioassays, …

Genetic Evidence For The Proto-Austronesian Homeland In Asia: Mtdna And Nuclear Dna Variation In Taiwanese Aboriginal Tribes, Terry Melton, Stephanie Clifford, Jeremy Martinson, Mark Batzer, Mark Stoneking Jan 1998

Genetic Evidence For The Proto-Austronesian Homeland In Asia: Mtdna And Nuclear Dna Variation In Taiwanese Aboriginal Tribes, Terry Melton, Stephanie Clifford, Jeremy Martinson, Mark Batzer, Mark Stoneking

Faculty Publications

Previous studies of mtDNA variation in indigenous Taiwanese populations have suggested that they held an ancestral position in the spread of mtDNAs throughout Southeast Asia and Oceania (Melton et al. 1995; Sykes et al. 1995), but the question of an absolute proto-Austronesian homeland remains. To search for Asian roots for indigenous Taiwanese populations, 28 mtDNAs representative of variation in four tribal groups (Ami, Atayal, Bunun, and Paiwan) were sequenced and were compared with each other and with mtDNAs from 25 other populations from Asia and Oceania. In addition, eight polymorphic Alu insertion loci were analyzed, to determine if the pattern …

On Summability Of Distributions And Spectral Geometry, R. Estrada, J. M. Gracia-Bondía, J. C. Várilly

Faculty Publications

Modulo the moment asymptotic expansion, the Cesàro and parametric behaviours of distributions at infinity are equivalent. On the strength of this result, we construct the asymptotic analysis for spectral densities arising from elliptic pseudodifferential operators. We show how Cesàro developments lead to efficient calculations of the expansion coefficients of counting number functionals and Green functions. The bosonic action functional proposed by Chamseddine and Connes can more generally be validated as a Cesàro asymptotic development.

On The Consistency Of The Constraint Algebra In Spin Network Quantum Gravity, Rodolfo Gambini, Jerzy Lewandowski, Donald Marolf, Jorge Pullin

Faculty Publications

We point out several features of the quantum Hamiltonian constraints recently introduced by Thiemann for Euclidean gravity. In particular we discuss the issue of the constraint algebra and of the quantum realization of the object qabVb, which is classically the Poisson Bracket of two Hamiltonians.
