Splenic Hemangiosarcoma With Abdominal Dissemination In A Dog, M. Yavuz Gülbahar, Tolga Güvenç, Ömer Beşalti

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

A case of spontaneosly ruptured splenic hemangiosarcoma with abdominal dissemination in a 12-year-old male German shepherd dog is described. At necropsy, a ruptured tumor mass was seen in the ventral region of the visceral surface of the spleen, and disseminated tumor masses were seen throughout the peritoneal cavity. Histologically, in both the primary tumor mass and dis-seminated tumor masses, atypical endothelial cells lining vascular spaces as small clefts or as cavernous channels were observed. Some immunological properties of tumor cells were determined for endothelial cell markers (factor VII-related antigen=von Willebrand's factor [vWf] and CD31 antigen), mesenchymal tissue marker (vimentin) and …

A Hydrological Investigation Of Three Devon Sand Dune Systems; Braunton Burrows, Northam Burrows And Dawlish Warren, Rachel Jane Burden Jan 1998

A Hydrological Investigation Of Three Devon Sand Dune Systems; Braunton Burrows, Northam Burrows And Dawlish Warren, Rachel Jane Burden

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

In 1993 concerns were expressed by English Nature that Devon's three largest sand dune systems Braunton Burrows, Northam Burrows and Dawlish Warren were drying out to the detriment of the dune habitat flora and fauna. Research was therefore required to understand how these systems functioned hydrologically, to determine whether they were drying out and if so to recommend sustainable management options aimed at reinstating former water levels, or preventing any further lowering of the water tables. At Braunton water table elevations have been monitored on a monthly basis by the Nature Conservancy, the Nature Conservancy Council and English Nature since …

Modelling And Monitoring Of Phosphorus Transport And Speciation In Soil, Darren Michael William Peat Jan 1998

Modelling And Monitoring Of Phosphorus Transport And Speciation In Soil, Darren Michael William Peat

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

Flow through soil into groundwater has been classically conceptualised as taking place through a set of aligned capillary tubes. In solute transport models these approximations are also present. Pore-Cor (a network model) has been used to model the void structure of soil by using water retention and mercury porosimetry curves. The model successfully predicts trends in saturated hydraulic conductivity. The effect of the assumptions used in the Pore-Cor geometry have been investigated by comparing of two dimensional slices of the simulated networks with two dimensional image analysis data. The geometric limitations of the model cause packing inefficiencies which prevent the …

Particle-Water Interactions Of Hydrophobic Organic Micropollutants In Marine Systems, M. Carl Rawling Jan 1998

Particle-Water Interactions Of Hydrophobic Organic Micropollutants In Marine Systems, M. Carl Rawling

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

An understanding of the reactivity of hydrophobic organic micropollutants (HOMs) is of paramount importance to water quality managers because of their toxicity, persistence, and liability to bioaccumulate. In this study, the role played by the main estuarine variables (organic matter, suspended particulate matter [SPM], particle type and salinity) on HOM behaviour was investigated by employing samples from estuaries with different geochemical signatures (Chupa, Russia, and the Dart, Plym, Beaulieu and Carnon, U K ) . A laboratory-based technique was developed for the determination of the solubility and sorptive behaviour of HOMs using 14C-labelled, beta-emitting organic compounds (2,2\5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl (2,2’5,5'-TCB), bis(2-ethylhexyl)phthalate ester …

Effects Of Zooplankton Size And Concentration And Light Intensity On The Feeding Behavior Of Atlantic Mackerel Scomber Scombrus, William K. Macy, Sandra J. Sutherland, Edward G. Durbin Jan 1998

Effects Of Zooplankton Size And Concentration And Light Intensity On The Feeding Behavior Of Atlantic Mackerel Scomber Scombrus, William K. Macy, Sandra J. Sutherland, Edward G. Durbin

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Atlantic mackerel Scomber scombrus had low clearance rates when fed older stage copepodites of the copepod Calanus finmarchicus at high concentrations and high clearance rates at low concentrations. These rates were consistent with filter feeding at high concentrations and particulate feeding at low concentrations. Intermediate and small copepods presented together at high concentrations were cleared at lower rates than the large C. finmarchicus, suggesting lower filtration efficiencies. Intermediate and small copepods were presented over a range of light intensities (8.2 x 10-8 to 1.6 x 100 µE m-2 s-1). Feeding rate did not change …

Response Of Primary Producers To Nutrient Enrichment In A Shallow Estuary, Eleanor H. Kinney, Charles T. Roman Jan 1998

Response Of Primary Producers To Nutrient Enrichment In A Shallow Estuary, Eleanor H. Kinney, Charles T. Roman

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Shallow coastal systems worldwide are exhibiting increased algal growth in response to nutrient enrichment. This study evaluates primary production patterns in an estuarine system (Bass Harbor Marsh, ME, USA) receiving low levels of anthropogenic nitrogen. Biomass, areal coverage and in situ oxygen production of green macroalgae, Ruppia maritima, and phytoplankton were measured over a growing season to determine net ecosystem production. Macroalgae and R. maritima exhibited seasonal biomass curves with early summer peaks; however, peak biomass of macroalgae [150 g dry weight (wt) m-2] was substantially greater than R. maritima (33 g dry wt m-2). …

Recent Trends In Merger Enforcement In The United States: The Increasing Impact Of Economic Analysis, Robert H. Lande, James Langenfeld Jan 1998

Recent Trends In Merger Enforcement In The United States: The Increasing Impact Of Economic Analysis, Robert H. Lande, James Langenfeld

All Faculty Scholarship

From its modern origins more than thirty years ago federal merger policy has centered around the use of standard surrogates for market power to make presumptions about the likely effects of mergers. Since that time it has been evolving towards an increasingly complex approach as economic considerations have expanded their influence on merger policy. This trend was solidified in the 1982 revision of the Department of Justice's Merger Guidelines, accelerated by the Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission 1992 Horizontal Merger Guidelines' increased emphasis on unilateral (as opposed to collusive) anticompetitive effects, and has reached new heights in the …

The Effect Of Sea Weed (Ascophyllum Nodosum) Extract On Antioxidant Activities And Drought Tolerance Of Tall Fescue (Festuca Arundinacea Schreb.), Jamal Yousef Ayad

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Plants have developed enzymatic and nonenzymatic antioxidant mechanisms to prevent oxidation of cellular compartments. Enhancing these mechanisms might help plants cope with encountered stresses. Greenhouse and field studies were conducted to examine the influence of seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) extract on antioxidant enzymes activities, forage Growth, and persistence of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.). Furthermore. effects of soil moisture, plant genotype, and infection with the endophyte Neotyphodium coenophialum ([Morgan-Jones and Gams] Glenn, Bacon and Hanlin) were investigated. In a greenhouse experiment, seaweed extract was applied to ‘Martin’ tall fescue at 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 kg ha in a …

The Development Of Unrestricted, Group Farrowing Systems For Sows, Jean Burke Jan 1998

The Development Of Unrestricted, Group Farrowing Systems For Sows, Jean Burke

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis examines the activities of four groups of four sows, allocated to one of two space allocations, in a novel farrowing system design, over parturition and during lactation. The two pen configurations provided 13.4m² (L) and 8.6m² (S) per sow, respectively. A lactation diet providing 14MJ/kg DE and 18% CP was supplied ad libitum via a sow operated feeder, adapted to facilitate the calculation of individual feed intakes. The influence of environmental, physical, management and production factors upon the way in which sows allocated their time to different activities, suckling behaviour, feed intakes and feeding and drinking strategies was …

Theatre Of Life: Rituals, Transition And Progression Among The Igbo, Mary-Blossom Chinyelum Okafor Jan 1998

Theatre Of Life: Rituals, Transition And Progression Among The Igbo, Mary-Blossom Chinyelum Okafor

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The Igbo are perpetual celebrants of life. Their need to celebrate life means that the Igbo will ceaselessly try to make the best of life, because they believe that although life may be full of uncertainties, such uncertainties are only temporary. So, the Igbo will celebrate whatever fortune brings in the knowledge that tomorrow will definitely be different. It is this insight into the transitory nature of things that makes the Igbo celebrate life, aware that time has the ability to obliterate uncelebrated memories. In the researcher's opinion, this work has succeeded in establishing the fact that the study and …
