Blood As A Biological "Drug": Scientific, Legal, And Policy Issues In The Regulation Of Placental And Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Transplantation, Jennifer Kulynych Jan 1998

Blood As A Biological "Drug": Scientific, Legal, And Policy Issues In The Regulation Of Placental And Umbilical Cord Stem Cell Transplantation, Jennifer Kulynych

University of Richmond Law Review

Not all blood cells are created equal. Some are born, carry out their appointed tasks-red blood cells oxygenating the blood, white blood cells fighting infection-and die. But an elusive subset have special properties: they are the progenitors of all the many types of peripheral (circulatory) blood cells, and as such, they have the potential to reconstitute an entire blood supply. Known as hematopoietic stem cells, these blood cells reproduce indefinitely. For patients with leukemia or other blood diseases, the transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells from another person's bone marrow can provide the gift of life.

"A Tolerable Straight Line" : Non-Linear Narrative In Tristram Shandy, Daniel L. Hocutt Jan 1998

"A Tolerable Straight Line" : Non-Linear Narrative In Tristram Shandy, Daniel L. Hocutt

Master's Theses

The non-linear narrative of Laurence Sterne's Tri st ram Shandy demands attentive readers. Written under the influence of John Locke's Essay Concerning Human Understanding, the novel satirizes Lockean "associationism" and illustrates language's inability to express ideas accurately. In the novel, words seldom convey characters' intended meanings, yet Tristram uses language effectively to narrate "self" to his readers. Rather than having his mind's workings conform to the linear nature of traditional discourse, Tristram communicates associatively to intelligent, involved readers without imposing linearity. In this study I examine scholars' work to determine Tristram 's position on Locke's ideas and use Seymour Chatman …

The Declaration Of Independence In Constitutional Interpretation: A Selective History And Analysis, Charles H. Cosgrove Jan 1998

The Declaration Of Independence In Constitutional Interpretation: A Selective History And Analysis, Charles H. Cosgrove

University of Richmond Law Review

In 1845, antislavery constitutionalist Lysander Spooner argued that the Declaration of Independence was originally a legal constitution with a direct bearing on how one ought to interpret the status of slavery under the Constitution of 1787. In 1889, the congressional act establishing the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, and Washington required that their state constitutions "not be repugnant to the Constitution of the United States and the Declaration of Independence," as if the two documents were of a piece. In 1995, attorney Christopher Darden argued to the jury in the O.J. Simpson criminal trial that slain victims Nicole …

The Rise Of Environmental Law In The Asian Region, Ben Boer Jan 1998

The Rise Of Environmental Law In The Asian Region, Ben Boer

University of Richmond Law Review

In the past three decades, the realm of environmental law in many Western countries, and internationally, has grown from a small baby crying for attention to a full-fledged, articulate adult, participating in a wide variety of international, regional, and national fora concerning the protection of the environment and the management of our natural resources. More recently, in many non-Western countries and especially in Asia, environmental law has begun to enter into adulthood, manifested by significant legislative initiatives, judicial activism and a resulting environmental jurisprudence, and the establishment and growth of environmental and resource management agencies.

What Is A Vessel - A Three Prong Approach, Jeff Nemerofsky Jan 1998

What Is A Vessel - A Three Prong Approach, Jeff Nemerofsky

Cleveland State Law Review

In the context of United States admiralty law, the definition of the word "vessel" has different meanings depending upon which statute has jurisdiction, the nature of the circumstances, and the characteristics of the person involved. There is no settled definition of the word. The Jones Act is a statute designed to cover seamen injured by the negligent acts of their employer, and is indicative of other admiralty statutes which, by their lack of a specific definition of the word "vessel," have created controversy in the judicial system. This comment proposes a three prong test that suggests several criteria to be …

The Effect Of Pre-And Postnatal Cd Exposure Onconduction Velocity In Sciatic Nerve, Piraye Yargiçoğlu, Aysel Ağar, Ümit Kemal Şentürk, Nimet İzgüt Uysal, Derya Kiliç

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The purpose of the study has been to investigate the effect of preand postnatal Cd exposure on conduction velocity of sciatic nerve. Pregnant Swiss albino rats were divided into three groups as control (C), cadmium (Cd) and non-cadmium (NCd) groups. Control animals received tap water while rats in Cd group received Cd as CdCl 2 in their drinking water during the experimental period. The mothers of the NCd group were given Cd during their pregnancy but given tap water after birth. Twenty-two days after birth (postnatal day 22) the rats were separated from the mothers. The present study was performed …

Use Of Baculovirus As Expression Vector In Biotechnology, Zihni Demi̇rbağ, A. Osman Beldüz, İsmail Demi̇r

Turkish Journal of Biology

Variuos viral, bacterial, plant and animal proteins which are important for medicinal, industrial and agricultural aspects, have been synhesized via expression vector systems have great importance in biotechnology. Baculoviruses, used as a good model system in molecular biology studies, a biological control agent in agriculture and an expression vector for synthesis of important proteins, opened up a significant period for recombinant DNA technology and protein production. Desired foreign genes, code for various products such as drug, toxin and nutrient substances, can be replaced with viral genes which are not essasial for replication of baculovirus in cell culture. Priority and advantages …

A Comparision Of The Right And Left Hippocampus In Therabbit Brain In Terms Of Cell Density, Hayri Genç Jan 1998

A Comparision Of The Right And Left Hippocampus In Therabbit Brain In Terms Of Cell Density, Hayri Genç

Turkish Journal of Biology

The aim of this study was to investigate the structural asymmetry between the hemispheres by comparing the number of pyramidal cells in the right dorsal hippocampus with left dorsal hippocampus in the rabbit brain. Six adult domestic New Zeland rabbits were used in experiments. All animals were perfused intracardially with neutral formaline (10 %) under deep aneasthesia. The serial frontal sections were stained with thionin. The rostro-caudal level of these sections were determined by using a stereotaxic atlas of the rabbit brain. The number of pyramidal neurons was determined by counting identifiable neurons which had distict nucleus and nucleolus. The …
