The Imperative That African-American Authors Define The Nature Of African-American Heroes In Literature: Or Uncle Tom To Jedediah West, Harry Jackson Jr. Jan 1998

The Imperative That African-American Authors Define The Nature Of African-American Heroes In Literature: Or Uncle Tom To Jedediah West, Harry Jackson Jr.

Theses

This document will demonstrate the need for African-American authors to define the essential and fundamental characteristics, disposition and purpose of the literary heroes of African Americans by way of an analysis of the novel, Cowboy, the Saga of Jedediah West, which I wrote between 1995 and 1998. The creation of a distinct literary heroic tradition for African Americans is necessary, I contend, because the culture virtually has been deprived and devoid of literary, imaginary heroes. Because people of every culture require heroes for healthy evolution, African Americans have weighted their heroic tradition with living heroes exclusively who are accepted …

Global Ischemia And Turn Preference; Acomparative Study Of The Effects Of Globalischemic Insult In Rats, Akçahan Gepdi̇remen, Cemal Gündoğdu, Sinan Sönmez, Dilek Sadeler, Halis Süleyman, Mehmet Emin Büyükokuroğlu

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

We examined the effect of global cerebral ischemia (Two vessel occlusion plus systemic hypotension method) for 15 minutes on the hippocampal CA1 and CA3 neurones in rats, and compared with turn prefence scores. 14 of 27 animals were ambidexter while 9 had left and 4 had right turn preference. The left turns were significantly different from rights (t:2,26 df:26 p:0,032). Male rats prefered 62,73% and females 56,88% left turns. Forty-eight hours following the global cerebral ischemic insult, animals were sacrificed and brains were examined by using light microscope. Hippocampal neurones of the right hemisphere were survived more in males while …

The Role Of Serum On The Adhesion Of Culturedchinese Hamster Lung (Chl) Cells, Ali Yildirim

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

The roles of serum on the initial attachment and adhesion strength of CHL cells, which is gained following initial attachment, spreading and growth, on tissue culture polystyrene dish were determined by using a convergent Microflow chamber. In the presence of 10% fetal calf serum 98%±2% of cells were attaching within 2 hours at 37°C. While only 74%±3% of cells were attaching during the same period of incubation in serum free medium. The critical shear stresses of detachment of CHL cells were 3.01±0.25 Nm -2 , 5.38±0.55 Nm -2 , 7.22±0.54 Nm -2 , 9.47±0.43 Nm -2 , and 9.54±1.15 Nm …

Determination Of The Prevalence Of Latexsensitivity By In Vivo And In Vitromethods Among Hospital Employees Andallergic Patients, Ayşe Füsun Kalpaklioğlu, Lütfü Gürbüz, Zeynep Misirligi̇l

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background: Latex has been documented as causing immediate hypersensitivity reactions ranging from contact urticaria to severe anaphylaxis. The prevalence of latex allergy appears to be higher in certain risk groups due to increased exposure or to an increased intrinsic predilection for atopy. The purpose of the present study was both to assess latex sensitivity in a large group of allergic patients and in hospital emyloyees and to evaluate the relationship between latex sensitivity and skin prick test (SPT) responses to fruits as well as inhalant allergens. Methods: This study was designed prospectively in a randomized manner. SPTs were performed and …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Tamoxifen citrate (TAM), a nonsteroidal antiestrogen, is a drug of choice in the endocrine treatment for all stages of breast cancer in both pre and postmenopausal patients. The tissue distrubution of TAM alone and combined with medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) following long-term p.o. administration in immature rats is investigated in the present study. The highest consentrations of TAM has been found in the hypophysis in both groups. TAM consentrations were effected by MPA treatment in the liver and kidneys.

Transnational Technology And The Death Of The Other : An Essay About Khmers In Cyberspace, Tyrone Wayne Siren Jan 1998

Transnational Technology And The Death Of The Other : An Essay About Khmers In Cyberspace, Tyrone Wayne Siren

Honors Capstones

Throughout this essay, I attempt to come to terms with anthropology as an human science. I look at it as both an empirical and theoretical discipline, discussing the role anthropology should play in an age of transnational culture and media technologies. First, I discuss contemporary theoretical anthropology, describing its philosophical motivations and associations-a topic that is all too neglected in anthropological theory, as if theoreticians are not in the social nexus and philosophical milieu of their time. I begin with hermeneutics and then describe the postmodern reaction to it. However, I critique the postmodernists for being even more arrogant than …

Defying Political Boundaries: Transborder Tourism In A Regional Context, Walter Leimgruber Jan 1998

Defying Political Boundaries: Transborder Tourism In A Regional Context, Walter Leimgruber

Visions in Leisure and Business

Political boundaries have traditionally been considered barriers, or obstacles, to all kinds of communication and interaction. The end of the 20th century has seen a gradual defunctionalisation of many political boundaries and a subsequent increase in transborder cooperation. Among the economic sectors that benefit from such an opening of borders is tourism, particularly on a regional scale. This paper examines the specific case of Switzerland, a landlocked country with a long tradition of regional transborder collaboration. After a general introduction, four examples are presented to demonstrate the rich variety of local transborder attractions that are complementary to each other and …

Service Learning: A Creative Strategy For Inclusive Classrooms, Pamela J. Gent, Louis E. Gurecka Jan 1998

Service Learning: A Creative Strategy For Inclusive Classrooms, Pamela J. Gent, Louis E. Gurecka

Disabilities

The movement for full inclusion is often hindered by the lack of creative and alternative teaching methodologies in regular classrooms. Service learning not only offers an alternative to traditional classroom teaching methods, it is also a vehicle to provide inclusive community based instruction, to promote the development of communities and to provide functional skills training. This paper defines service learning and its components while also discussing applicability of service learning for all students.

Development Of A Geothermal Heat Pump Test Facility, Chris Collins Jan 1998

Development Of A Geothermal Heat Pump Test Facility, Chris Collins

Theses

Current environmental concerns have led to large scale research and development in the area of alternative energy supplies. The alternative energy system of interest in this study is the heat pump. Heat pumps extract heat from a variety of sources such as air, water and the earth, upgrade and transmit it to the required location. The aim of this thesis is to develop mathematical and experimental models to evaluate the performance of a heat pump which uses the earth as its thermal source. These models will then form the basis of design aids for installers sizing closed loop collection systems …
