Characterization And Biodegradation Of Crawfish And Agricultural Processing By-Product Compost., Mounir Yehia Minkara Jan 1998

Characterization And Biodegradation Of Crawfish And Agricultural Processing By-Product Compost., Mounir Yehia Minkara

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Disposal of crawfish processing wastes poses a challenging problem to the rapidly expanding crawfish industry. Co-composting is examined as a waste management alternative to landfill disposal. Wood chips, rice hulls, bagasse, and bark were evaluated for use as bulking agents in composting crawfish processing residuals. Use of bagasse as a bulking agent led to the largest reduction in volatile solids, organic-C, particle size, and compost volume. Finished compost using bagasse contained the greatest concentration of N. Self-heating patterns and decomposition of crawfish residuals were satisfactory using all four bulking agents. The finished products of all compost mixtures were stable and …

The Effect Of Pulmonary Infection (Actinobacillus Pleuropneumoniae), Endotoxin And Dexamethasone On Enrofloxacin Pharmacokinetic Parameters In Swine., Lynn O. Post Jan 1998

The Effect Of Pulmonary Infection (Actinobacillus Pleuropneumoniae), Endotoxin And Dexamethasone On Enrofloxacin Pharmacokinetic Parameters In Swine., Lynn O. Post

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Efficacy studies are often done on diseased animals while pharmacokinetic studies are done on healthy animals. Disease models are inherently difficult to standardize because of the many variables associated with measuring pharmacokinetic parameters in abnormal animals. Information derived from pharmacokinetic studies with diseased animals could be useful to determine if therapeutic doses of a drug or antimicrobial becomes less effective or toxic due to changes in distribution and clearance. The objectives of this study were to: characterize a pulmonary infection model in swine using Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae; evaluate the pharmacokinetic changes associated with the pulmonary infection model and dexamethasone after the …

Gaining And Controlling Access To The Arena: Stories Of Ties In A Technological Dispute., Tobias Albert Ten Eyck Jan 1998

Gaining And Controlling Access To The Arena: Stories Of Ties In A Technological Dispute., Tobias Albert Ten Eyck

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

This is a study of the stories told about distribution of resources and structural constraints which operate within newspaper arenas that were experienced by reporters and sources involved in coverage of food irradiation between 1987 and 1996 at two regional newspapers (Louisiana and Florida). Using an unstructured interview instrument, I conducted interviews with 40 sources and 12 newspaper reporters, which I used to construct a framework in which to show how cultural, economic and social capital are used for getting and blocking action in the newspaper arenas. These interviews show that while cultural capital was the most prominent type of …

Autobiography From St. Augustine To David Antin: Examining The Construction Of The Self As Mutually Reflective Of Cultural Developments In Science And Technology, Art, And Literary Theory., Jessica Lynn Faust Jan 1998

Autobiography From St. Augustine To David Antin: Examining The Construction Of The Self As Mutually Reflective Of Cultural Developments In Science And Technology, Art, And Literary Theory., Jessica Lynn Faust

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In this study, I look at the mutually reflective changes in society and autobiography in works definitive for their various periods: Augustine's The Confessions from antiquity; Rousseau's The Confessions from the eighteenth century; the autobiographical writings of Gertrude Stein, from the modernist period; and, most importantly here, the focus on the development of David Antin's work as representative of both postmodernism and current culture. Specifically, I consider the construction of the self in respect to art, literary theory, memory research, and science and technology. During the second half of the twentieth century, computers have permeated almost every facet of society. …

Rousseau And The Lyric Natural: The Self As Representation., Pamela Diane Gay Jan 1998

Rousseau And The Lyric Natural: The Self As Representation., Pamela Diane Gay

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Jean-Jacques Rousseau's work for the lyric stage comprises several opera libretti (Les Muses galantes and La Decouverte du nouveau monde), an intermede ( Le Devin du village), a scene lyrique ( Pygmalion) and an unfinished opera (Daphnis et Chloce ). These works use as a motif the figure of nature while continually defining and redefining, in a sort of spiral development, the self. Nature represents for Rousseau and others of his century a paradigm allowing for small segments of history to be presented as an evenly construed narrative. For Rousseau, the construction of a narrative in Le Second Discours marks …

Computer-Assisted Instruction: Enhancements For Language-Learning Applications., William Lawrence Harrell Jr Jan 1998

Computer-Assisted Instruction: Enhancements For Language-Learning Applications., William Lawrence Harrell Jr

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Presently, computer-assisted instruction is in use in many educational venues. Unfortunately, the application of computer-assisted language learning at a distance has virtually been ignored. This is an opportunity that needs to be explored. In order to do so, a number of considerations must be attended to. First, effective monitor display design is critical for the optimal presentation of distance learning material. Second, gender and equity factors that impact computer use must be understood to minimize the detrimental effects they might have on computer-assisted distance learning. Third, the needs of students involved with the particularly-demanding application of distance learning principles of …

Autobiographical Memory In Mild And Moderate Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type., Judith Parks Levy Jan 1998

Autobiographical Memory In Mild And Moderate Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type., Judith Parks Levy

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive disease that particularly affects memory with difficulties starting insidiously and gradually progressing. Anterograde amnesia for semantic and episodic types of declarative knowledge becomes the most prominent and disproportionately impaired cognitive symptom. By the middle stages of the disease, this memory loss progresses to severe impairment. The neuropathology of early AD involves the hippocampal complex, which is involved in new learning and storage of recent experiences. As the disease progresses, it involves neocortical areas, which are involved in the storage of more remote memories. Participants, including minimal stage AD, mild stage AD, moderate stage AD, …

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The morphological and functional mechanisms involved in the early fertilization events in the freshwater zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha (Bivalvia:Veneroida:Dreissenidae) are presented. Mature adults release gametes in response to external applications of 5-hydroxytryptamine. Sperm retain a primitive morphology consisting of a head, midpiece and tail The head is approximately 1.6 $\mu$m in diameter and 4 $\mu$m in length. An acrosomal vesicle is highly compartmentalized with a central axial core containing actin. The midpiece is composed of 4 mitochondria and a pair of centrioles. A single flagellum is elaborated from the distal centriole. The eggs of D. polymorpha are 50-60 $\mu$m in …

"To Play With Fixities And Definites": Byron's Fanciful Real World Games In "Don Juan"., Nancy Clark Victory Jan 1998

"To Play With Fixities And Definites": Byron's Fanciful Real World Games In "Don Juan"., Nancy Clark Victory

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In his "epic" retelling of the Don Juan tale, Byron playfully transforms his conventional sources into a poem which explores, among other subjects, Byron's poetics. Of the many love relationships in Don Juan, Juan and Haidee's represents not only ideal love, but also a startlingly Romantic expression of poetic activity. The lovers' transformation of the elements of their heretofore hostile world into a natural playworld is accomplished by a fourth variety of Romantic imagination, a Byronic Fancy which surpasses the mechanical nature of Coleridge's "Fancy." Operating in a manner strikingly similar to Coleridge's "secondary Imagination," Byron's poetic faculty also "dissolves, …

The Psychometric Characteristics Of The Adhd Rating Scale-Iv., George Walter Hebert Jan 1998

The Psychometric Characteristics Of The Adhd Rating Scale-Iv., George Walter Hebert

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The ADHD Rating Scale-IV is a screening instrument designed to assess attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder in children. It is comprised of 18 items and has both a home and school version for parents and teachers to complete, respectively. A sample consisting of 178 parent-teacher dyads of children aged 6-12 years of age participated in the study. Psychometric investigation of these scales revealed high internal consistency, adequate test-retest reliability, and appropriate correlations with other measures of ADHD. Principal components factor analysis revealed two factors for both scales: (1) Inattention-hyperactivity and (2) Impulsivity-hyperactivity. Discriminant function analyses and base rate analyses revealed that these scales …

Cerebral Hemoglobin Oxygen Saturation In Patients With Restless Legs Syndrome And Periodic Limb Movements In Sleep., Mark Jude Hurry Jan 1998

Cerebral Hemoglobin Oxygen Saturation In Patients With Restless Legs Syndrome And Periodic Limb Movements In Sleep., Mark Jude Hurry

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Pathogenic theories of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) and Periodic Limb Movements in Sleep (PLMS) were reviewed and critiqued, and a new theory for the pathogenesis of RLS and PLMS was presented. It was proposed that both disorders are caused by sleep-related hypoperfusion in the area of the cerebral cortex that mediates sensation and movement in the legs. The hypoperfusion was proposed to be caused by high amplitude oscillations in total cerebral blood flow known as B-waves and by flow-reducing turbulence at several of the bifurcations in the anterior cerebral artery. This theory was tested by using near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) …

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Potyviruses Isolated From Sweet Potato., Eliezer Rodrigues De Souto Jan 1998

Biological And Molecular Properties Of Potyviruses Isolated From Sweet Potato., Eliezer Rodrigues De Souto

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Ten potyvirus isolates from sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) cv. Beauregard showing russet crack symptoms and three other isolates associated with internal cork and feathery mottle symptoms were obtained from commercial fields in the United States. The biological properties of these isolates and those of a mechanically transmitted virus obtained from I. purpurea were compared with a previously characterized sweet potato feathery mottle virus strain (SPFMV-C) from North Carolina. The symptoms induced in a range of hosts indicated that two of the isolates were associated with russet crack symptoms in the cultivar Jersey; however, none of them could be associated with …

Quantifying Sustainability In Aquaculture Production., Rex Hall Caffey Jan 1998

Quantifying Sustainability In Aquaculture Production., Rex Hall Caffey

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Despite increasing institutional focus in aquaculture, sustainability remains an amorphous and much debated concept. Little consensus has been identified on the issue beyond the general recognition that the concept should contain environmental, economic, and sociological considerations. This study addressed the specific, relevant question of whether politically diverse aquacuiture interests can collectively develop and agree on production-level goals and indicators of aquaculture sustainability. The research partitioned sustainability into its three subcategories: environmental, economic and social. This division facilitated the use of existing conventions of measurement and expression in each subcategory. Employing a modified Delphi technique, over 100 aquaculture stakeholders in the …

Apoptosis, Pcna, And P53, In Fundulus Grandis Fish Liver After In-Vivo Exposure To Mnng And 2-Af., Uriel Blas-Machado

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Dysfunction in homeostatic mechanisms of cell death and proliferation are considered to be important in carcinogenesis. The p53 gene has been implicated in the regulation of cell death and proliferation. The host response was measured through sequential immunohistochemical (IHC) detection of apoptosis, PCNA, and p53 in livers of Fundulus grandis fish exposed to MNNG or to 2-AF, two known carcinogens. Studies performed determined the stability of MNNG in saltwater, the suitability of different fixatives on IHC detection of apoptosis, PCNA-PC10, and p53 (various clones), and frequencies of expression of apoptosis, PCNA, and p53. A total of 996 fish specimens were …

Evaluating The Impacts Of Farmer Participation In The Wetland Reserve Program On The Louisiana Economy Using I-O, Sam, And Cge As Alternative Modeling Techniques., Williams Olubodunde Olatubi Jan 1998

Evaluating The Impacts Of Farmer Participation In The Wetland Reserve Program On The Louisiana Economy Using I-O, Sam, And Cge As Alternative Modeling Techniques., Williams Olubodunde Olatubi

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

In the U.S., wetlands are one of the resources that have been adversely affected by development in agriculture. In response, and in order to protect wetlands as vital environmental resource, the federal government initiated several agriculture-related environmental protection programs, such as swamp buster, the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP), and the Wetlands Reserve Program (WRP). The WRP is an incentive-based program designed to encourage farmers to reconvert appropriate cropland to wetlands through subsidy payments. Because land is withdrawn from agricultural production, regions with relatively high participation rates, such as Louisiana, could experience adverse economic impacts from the program. As of August …

Effects Of Anesthesia And Potential Antispastic Agents In An Experimental Model Of Spasticity., Heather Colleen Mosser Jan 1998

Effects Of Anesthesia And Potential Antispastic Agents In An Experimental Model Of Spasticity., Heather Colleen Mosser

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Spasticity is a common motor disorder in spinal cord injured-patients. Therapeutic agents used to treat the motor abnormalities exist but are often unsatisfactory. Tests of potential pharmacotherapies are routinely conducted in anesthetized intact or acutely spinal animals, conditions which do not accurately simulate the human situation. The purpose of this dissertation was to develop, validate and use the chronic spinal rat as a model of spasticity that closely approximates the human spastic syndrome to evaluate antispastic agents. The main goals of this research project were to: (1) demonstrate the development of spasticity in the chronic spinal rat; (2) determine effects …

An Investigation Of Worry And Its Relationship To Anxiety In A Non-Clinical Sample Of Adolescents., Denise Adair Powers

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The overall purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between worry and anxiety in a community sample of adolescents. As no psychometrically sound instruments for measuring parameters of worry in adolescents exist, the first purpose of this study was to devise a reliable and valid measure of worry for this population. The Worry Inventory for Adolescents (WIA) was administered to 606 adolescents between the ages of 11 and 18. Based on the factor analysis, the WIA was divided into twelve factors and yielded two scores, Number of Worries and Worry Severity. The WIA demonstrated good internal consistency, moderate …

FFA level increased significantly in raw samples vacuum packed and packed in Ziplock (c) bags stored 4--5°C from …

The Portrait Of A Psyche: Women's Underworld Journeys In Four Modern American Novels., Kristen Sifert Jan 1998

The Portrait Of A Psyche: Women's Underworld Journeys In Four Modern American Novels., Kristen Sifert

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Drawing from James Hillman's psychological reading of myth, this study traces the emergence of the ancient myth of Psyche in Henry James's The Portrait of a Lady, Caroline Gordon's The Women on the Porch, William Faulkner's Light in August, and Toni Morrison's Beloved. From the perspective of modern divisions, the novelists look forward to the wholeness of Psyche's reunion with Eros and the assumption of the mortal woman, yet their immediate focus is the transformative journey through the underworld. James elaborates the mythical impact of money; like the coins Psyche pays Charon, who detaches her from a sense of her …

Significance Of The Effect Of Nitrogen Application On The Engineered Bioremediation Of Crude Oil In A Salt Marsh., Paul Timothy Tate Jan 1998

Significance Of The Effect Of Nitrogen Application On The Engineered Bioremediation Of Crude Oil In A Salt Marsh., Paul Timothy Tate

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

The biodegradation of the crude oil in a salt marsh was monitored by tracking the decline of the ratio of various components in the crude oil to a stable marker, hopane. In studies of mesocosms, addition of nitrogen as ammonium nitrate resulted in more rapid biodegradation of the oil at 0.10 significance. In field plots, addition of nitrogen was found to not significantly increase the rate of oil degradation over the rate in the control plots. The degradation of the oil is best described by a first order decay equation. The kinetic rate parameter k was 0.0054/day in the control …

Effects Of The Burrowing Brittlestar, Microphiopholis Gracillima (Echinodermata: Ophiuroidea), On The Flux Of Lithium, An Inert Tracer, Across The Sediment-Water Interface, Timothy H. Shepherd, Stephen E. Stancyk, Timothy J. Shaw

Gulf and Caribbean Research

Burrowing and ventilation activities of infaunal organisms have been shown to affect geochemical processes in sediments and at the sediment-water interface. Although burrowing brittlestars are dominant in many benthic environments, their role in these processes is poorly known. We tested the effect of the amphiurid brittlestar, Microphiopholis gracillima, on the flux of lithium ion from the sediment to the overlying water by using sediment cores with false bottoms for continuous flow of a Li+1-seawater solution. Brittlestars at densities of 300 and 600 individuals m-2 caused a twofold increase in the rate that Li was transported through …
