Olfactory Responses Of Glossina Fuscipes Fuscipes (Diptera: Glossinidae) To The Monitor Lizard Varanus Niloticus Niloticus, M. M. Mohamed-Ahmed

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Visual and olfactory responses of Glossina fuscipes fuscipes Newstead to the monitor lizard, Varanus niloticus niloticus Laurenti were studied using various catching devices near Lake Victoria, Kenya. Electric nets baited with visible lizards caught more males (x2.1) and significantly more females (x2.0) than unbaited nets. Lizards concealed in electrified black Pvc pipe models, simulating the shape and size of a monitor lizard, increased significantly the catches of tsetse by 2.1 times. Fresh lizard urine dispensed at an evaporation rate of 500 to 1000 mg/h also increased significantly the catches of flies at biconical traps, electrified models and electric nets. Identification …

The Effects Of A Dna Virus Infection On The Reproductive Otential Of Female Tsetse Flies, Glossina Morsitans Centralis And Glossina Morsitans Morsitans (Diptera: Glossinidae), Rosemary C. Sang, Walter G.Z.O. Jura, Leonard H. Otieno, Richard W. Mwangi Jan 1998

The Effects Of A Dna Virus Infection On The Reproductive Otential Of Female Tsetse Flies, Glossina Morsitans Centralis And Glossina Morsitans Morsitans (Diptera: Glossinidae), Rosemary C. Sang, Walter G.Z.O. Jura, Leonard H. Otieno, Richard W. Mwangi

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Reproductive anomalies associated with the tsetse DNA virus infection in the female tsetse hosts, Glossina morsitans centralis Machado and Glossina morsitans morsitans Westwood, inoculated with the virus during the 3rd instar larval stage were studied and the data compared to those obtained from the control females injected with sterile physiological saline. Virus infected flies had significantly longer first and second pregnancy cycles (P<0.0001) and produced pupae that were of significantly less weight in milligrams (P<-0.0001) compared to controls. Transmission of the virus to progeny was not absolute and only 21% of G. m. centralis and 48% of G. m. morsitans first progeny flies from infected females developed salivary gland hypertrophy as a result of transmission from mother to progeny. The virus infected females produced significantly fewere pupae compared to the controls during the experimental period (P<0.00001).

Energy Requirements For Certified Organic Farms In New Jersey : A Survey And Analysis Of Tomato Production, Cecilia Kelnhofer-Feeley Jan 1998

Energy Requirements For Certified Organic Farms In New Jersey : A Survey And Analysis Of Tomato Production, Cecilia Kelnhofer-Feeley

Theses

The focus of this thesis is to document the fossil fuel and electrical energy consumption required to grow certified organic tomatoes in the State of New Jersey. First, in order to evaluate the energy requirement for agriculture, a literature review of energy changes during the twentieth century is discussed. Secondly, an in-depth look at energy requirements for all farming types is evaluated. Third, previous studies of the energy requirements in agriculture are examined; this includes both analyzing organic and conventional farming practices. A survey was generated from the information gathered. The survey was conducted via face-to-face interviews. When all the …

Sawerigading In Strange Places: The I La Galigo Myth In Central Sulawesi, Jennifer W. Nourse Jan 1998

Sawerigading In Strange Places: The I La Galigo Myth In Central Sulawesi, Jennifer W. Nourse

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

In this chapter I present an alternative response to Sawerigading. Among the Central Sulawesi Lauje who live in the Kecamatan Tinombo on the Tomini Bay, Sawerigading is not a Bugis hero, but a native son. In what follows I explore his transformation from Bugis into local Lauje hero and what this transformation reveals about the extent of Bugis influence in a Central Sulawesi coastal kingdom which is at the political periphery of South Sulawesi. Most of the people in the community discuss claim to be either Lauje, the indigenous ethnic group, or an immigrant mix of Kaili, Gorontalo or Mandar. …

Upstream Patents = Downstream Bottlenecks, Rebecca S. Eisenberg, Michael A. Heller Jan 1998

Upstream Patents = Downstream Bottlenecks, Rebecca S. Eisenberg, Michael A. Heller

Articles

Thirty years ago in Science, Garrett Hardin introduced the metaphor "tragedy of the commons" to help explain overpopulation, air pollution, and species extinction. People often overuse resources they own in common because they have no incentive to conserve. Today, Hardin's metaphor is central to debates in economics, law, and science and powerful justification for privatizing commons property. While the metaphor highlights the cost of overuse when governments allow too many people to use a scarce resource, it misses the possibility of underuse when governments give too many people rights to exclude others. Privatization can solve one tragedy, but cause another.

The Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act Of 1998: The Sun Sets On California's Blue Sky Laws, David M. Lavine, Adam C. Pritchard Jan 1998

The Securities Litigation Uniform Standards Act Of 1998: The Sun Sets On California's Blue Sky Laws, David M. Lavine, Adam C. Pritchard

Articles

It is often said that California sets the pace for changes in America's tastes. Trends established in California often find their way into the heartland, having a profound effect on our nation's cultural scene. Nouvelle cuisine, the dialect of the Valley Girl and rollerblading all have their genesis on the West Coast. The most recent trend to emerge from California, instead of catching on in the rest of the country, has been stopped dead in its tracks by a legislative rebuke from Washington, D.C. California's latest, albeit short-lived, contribution to the nation was a migration of securities fraud class actions …

The Gift Of Language, Joseph Vining Jan 1998

The Gift Of Language, Joseph Vining

Articles

Style and substance cross-are genetically related as we now might want to say. Each draws on and is implied by the other. One point at which they cross is our sense of the nature of human language, what language is and can be, what it is not and can never be. The language of law is part of human language. Law is a distinctive form of thought, but it lives in human language. "Rule" might be thought synonymous with "law," but for all its talk of rules, the practice of law does not begin with a descriptive statement, or a …

Talking About Religion In The Language Of The Law: Impossible But Necessary, James Boyd White Jan 1998

Talking About Religion In The Language Of The Law: Impossible But Necessary, James Boyd White

Articles

In speaking to this conference about religion and law I am in a decidedly peculiar position, for it may be that every one of you has thought longer and harder about the relation between these two forms of life than I have. When Scott Idleman first asked me to talk to you, I explained that I was no expert, to put it mildly, and that the most that I could offer would be the reflections of a neophyte. He said that this was fine-perhaps he was just desperate for a speaker; perhaps he thought that it might be helpful to …

United States V. O'Hagan: The Supreme Court Abandons Textualism To Adopt The Misappropriation Theory, Amy E. Fahey

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article analyzes the Supreme Courts ruling in United States v. O'Hagen holding that Section 10(b) of the Securities and Exchange Act can be applied to insider trading by corporate outsiders. The article argues that the Supreme Court incorrectly expanded the reach of the statute beyond that which Congress had intended.

Harnessing Payne: Controlling The Admission Of Victim Impact Statements To Safeguard Capital Sentencing Hearings From Passion And Prejudice, Beth E. Sullivan Jan 1998

Harnessing Payne: Controlling The Admission Of Victim Impact Statements To Safeguard Capital Sentencing Hearings From Passion And Prejudice, Beth E. Sullivan

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This article begins by tracing the historical development of victim impact evidence through Supreme Court jurisprudence and state legislation and analyzes their use in the sentencing of phase capital punishment trials. It argues that the Supreme Court's decision in Payne V Tennessee allowing a jury to consider victim impact evidence in capital punishment sentencing is troublesome in light of a capital punishment defendant's constitutional rights, the history of the death penalty and traditional sentencing procedures. It concludes with a proposal for guidelines to regulates the use of such evidence in capital punishment sentencing,

Lawyering For Poor Communities In The Twenty-First Century, Matthew Diller Jan 1998

Lawyering For Poor Communities In The Twenty-First Century, Matthew Diller

Fordham Urban Law Journal

This Symposium focuses on a renewed focus on community lawyering. Finding new ways to work with and engage poor communities is among the most important pieces of any new agenda for poverty law. By focusing on the goal of building community institutions and organizations, poverty lawyers can help poor communities in a number of vital ways. First, they can help communities create structures for the provision of services that government has failed to provide. Thus, poverty lawyers can provide much needed legal representation in the establishment of community-based housing, health care, day care and other programs that meet vital needs. …

The Concept Of Death Education On Children's Understanding Of Death, Diana K. Clark Schramm Jan 1998

The Concept Of Death Education On Children's Understanding Of Death, Diana K. Clark Schramm

Masters Theses

The purpose of this investigation was to determine if death education has an impact on children's understanding of death. This study was a non-randomized trial of a single educational session on death concepts of 38 second grade children (mean age 7.78 years). The Smilansky Death Concept Questionnaire, a validated and published interviewing tool, was administered pre and post intervention to all study subjects to evaluate their understanding of death. This intervention was a story on death and a peer group discussion.

Post-test scores were significantly higher than pretest scores for human death concept, and animal death concept, as well as …

Stories From The Other Side Of The Screen: Identifying Social Construction Within Educational Software, Brenda Matthis Jan 1998

Stories From The Other Side Of The Screen: Identifying Social Construction Within Educational Software, Brenda Matthis

Journal of Pedagogy, Pluralism, and Practice

Designers of software programs provide their narratives, perspectives, and points of view through the software programs they develop, consciously and explicitly or not. As the providers of these narratives, the software designers are considered the authors of this medium. These authors' narratives contribute to the social construction of the users of the software as they gain cognitive instruction and entertainment. This is especially important to consider when it comes to educational software used by children in the classroom and in the home. The traditional process for the examination of narrative and content in a medium is a review. Narratives in …

Cloning And Expression Of Heterologous Proteins In Bacteria And Yeast, Urvi J. Desai Jan 1998

Cloning And Expression Of Heterologous Proteins In Bacteria And Yeast, Urvi J. Desai

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Heterologous proteins are proteins produced by foreign hosts. The ability to overexpress commercially important proteins in various biological systems has revolutionized the field of biotechnology. In this project three proteins, namely Taq DNA polymerase, E. coli β-galactosidase, and S. cerevisiae topoisomerase I, were cloned and overexpressed in heterologous host. Conventional methods to obtain DNA polymerase from T. aquaticus were cumbersome. Cloning of the gene had been reported but the purification scheme required several steps. To simplify the purification procedure and improve the yield, the DNA polymerase gene from T. aquaticus was cloned into E. coli expression vector pUC18. A single …

Floral Sex Ratios And Gynomonoecy In Aster (Asteraceae), Robert I. Bertin, Maureen A. Kerwin Jan 1998

Floral Sex Ratios And Gynomonoecy In Aster (Asteraceae), Robert I. Bertin, Maureen A. Kerwin

Biology Department Faculty Scholarship

Gynomonoecy is the sexual system in which female and bisexual flowers occur on the same plant. This system has received little attention despite the considerable work on other plant sexual systems in the past few decades. Our study examines one hypothesized advantage of having two flower types on a plant, namely that this arrangement permits flexibility in allocation of resources to male and female reproductive functions. We examined 16 species of Aster (Asteraceae), a genus of gynomonoecious, perennial herbs. Plants in this genus produce heads consisting of a whorl of female flowers around a cluster of bisexual flowers. Among field-grown …

Cloning People: A Jewish Law Analysis Of The Issues, Michael J. Broyde Jan 1998

Cloning People: A Jewish Law Analysis Of The Issues, Michael J. Broyde

Faculty Articles

This Article is an attempt to create a preliminary and tentative analysis of the technology of cloning from a Jewish law perspective. Like all preliminary analyses, it is designed not to advance a rule that represents itself as definitive normative Jewish law, but rather an attempt to outline some of the issues in the hope that others will focus on the problems and analysis found in this Article and will sharpen or correct that analysis. Such is the way that Jewish law seeks truth.

In the case of cloning-as with all advances in reproductive technology- the Jewish tradition is betwixt …

Today, I reaffirm Governor Gilmore's commitment. I want to focus our particular attention on the Governor's number one environmental priority - improving the quality of our Commonwealth's great waters.

From Rio To Kyoto: A Study Of The Involvement Of Non-Governmental Organizations In The Negotiations On Climate Change, Chiara Giorgetti

Law Faculty Publications

This Article analyzes the influence of non-governmental actors on the negotiations of the Framework Convention on Climate Change (FCCC or the Convention). In particular, it evaluates the methods employed by NGOs in furthering their substantive agendas, the interaction among various non-governmental actors, and the results of their efforts. This Article considers two kinds of NGOs: business and environmental. Environmental NGOs (ENGOs) are the self-defined representatives of environmental interests. They campaign for the strict reduction of all gases that induce climate change. On the other side, business NGOs (BNGOs) typically represent the interests of those industries that are involved in the …
