A Study Of Water Pick-Up Rates And Their Effects On Ink Rheology, Ink Strength, Ink Dryback And Ink Rub-Off, Richard Wright Nov 1998

A Study Of Water Pick-Up Rates And Their Effects On Ink Rheology, Ink Strength, Ink Dryback And Ink Rub-Off, Richard Wright

Theses

It has been thought that the water pick-up rate and capacity of an ink may have a profound affect on the press performance of an ink. As the water content of ink changes so do the Theological characteristics of the ink and this effects ink performance attributes such as ink transfer, drying , rub resistance, set-off and strength. An emulsification curve can shed some light on how ink might perform on a press but this alone is not enough. The objective of this thesis research was to study the interaction of fountain solution and ink as used in the printing …

Model For Trace Metal Exposure In Filter-Feeding Flamingos At Alkaline Rift Valley Lake, Kenya, Yarrow M. Nelson, Ramesh J. Thampy, Gideon K. Motelin, Jackson A. Raini, Cynthia J. Disante, Leonard W. Lion

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Abstract—Toxic trace metals have been implicated as a potential cause of recent flamingo kills at Lake Nakuru, Kenya. Chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), and zinc (Zn) have accumulated in the lake sediments as a result of unregulated discharges and because this alkaline lake has no natural outlet. Lesser flamingos (Phoeniconaias minor) at Lake Nakuru feed predominantly on the cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis, and because of their filter-feeding mechanism, they are susceptible to exposure to particle-bound metals. Trace metal adsorption isotherms to lake sediments and S. platensis were obtained under simulated lake conditions, and a mathematical model was …

Two Swiss Of Peoria, Illinois, Marianne Burkhard Nov 1998

Two Swiss Of Peoria, Illinois, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In 1891, when he was 13, Emil Locher found himself transplanted to Peoria, Illinois, and faced with the necessity to help his mother and two siblings survive. His story gives some insight into working possibilities and conditions at the end of the last century. Without much schooling and without any professional training Emil Locher made his way up from a seasonal worker to the successful owner of a produce company without ever forgetting his poor childhood in Switzerland and the difficulties poor people have to face.

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

On behalf of the Vertebrate Pest Council, welcome to the Eighteenth Vertebrate Pest Conference. For 36 years, the Council has been presenting these conferences for the purpose of advancing knowledge in the field of vertebrate pest management. The conference proceedings are utilized extensively throughout the world as a source of information regarding vertebrate pest biology, behavior, ecology, and integrated pest management technology. Never before has the vertebrate pest management field been under as much pressure to change from using traditional control methods of trapping and toxicants, to what are viewed as more humane and environmentally friendly methods. Unfortunately, the general …

Rostral-Caudal Variation In Troponin T And Parvalbumin Correlates With Differences In Relaxation Rates Of Cod Axial Muscle, Tierney M. Thys, Jason M. Blank, Fred H. Schachat Nov 1998

Rostral-Caudal Variation In Troponin T And Parvalbumin Correlates With Differences In Relaxation Rates Of Cod Axial Muscle, Tierney M. Thys, Jason M. Blank, Fred H. Schachat

Biological Sciences

Relaxation rate is an important determinant of axial muscle power production during the oscillatory contractions of undulatory locomotion. Recently, significant differences have been reported in the relaxation rates of rostral versus caudal white muscle fibers of the Atlantic cod Gadus morhua L. The present study investigates the biochemical correlates of this rostral-caudal physiological variation. Using denaturing gel electrophoresis, a series of fresh muscle samples from the dorsal epaxial muscle region was analyzed and several differences were detected. First, a gradual shift occurs in the expression of two troponin T isoforms along the length of the body. Second, rostral muscles were …

Sequence Analysis Of Bacterial Dna In The Colon Of An Andean Mummy, Massimo Ubaldi, Stefania Luciani, Isolina Marota, Gino Fornaciari, Raul J. Cano, Franco Rollo

Biological Sciences

We have isolated DNA from 14 tissue samples from the internal organs of an Andean human mummy (10th–11th century A.D.) and have checked the persistence of the original human and bacterial templates using the following main approaches: 1) amino acid racemization test; 2) quantification of mitochondrial DNA copy number; 3) survey of bacterial DNA in the different organs; 4) sequence analysis of bacterial amplicons of different lengths. The results demonstrate that both the original human DNA and the DNA of the bacteria of the mummy gut are preserved. In particular, sequence analysis of two (respectively 100 and 196 bp in …

Environmental Assessment For The Designation Of The Continental Divide National Scenic Trail, United States Department Of The Interior, Bureau Of Land Management

Environmental Assessments (WY)

On October 2, 1968, Congress passed the National Trails System Act. This Act called for the establishment of a system of national scenic trails "which will be extended trails so located as to provide for maximum outdoor recreation potential and for the conservation and enjoyment of the nationally significant scenic, historic, natural, or cultural qualities of the areas through which such trails may pass." As a result of the 1978 amendment to this Act, Congress designated the Continental Divide National Scenic Trail (CDNST) as part of the National Scenic Trail system. The CDNST is a trail route traversing the length …

Trophectoderm Differentiation In The Bovine Embryo: Characterization Of A Polarized Epithelium., L C Barcroft, A Hay-Schmidt, A Caveney, E Gilfoyle, E W Overstrom, P Hyttel, A J Watson

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Blastocytst formation is dependent on the differentiation of a transporting epithelium, the trophectoderm, which is coordinated by the embryonic expression and cell adhesive properties of E-cadherin. The trophectoderm shares differentiative characteristics with all epithelial tissues, including E-cadherin-mediated cell adhesion, tight junction formation, and polarized distribution of intramembrane proteins, including the Na-K ATPase. The present study was conducted to characterize the mRNA expression and distribution of polypeptides encoding E-cadherin, beta-catenin, and the tight junction associated protein, zonula occludens protein 1, in pre-attachment bovine embryos, in vitro. Immunocytochemistry and gene specific reverse transcription--polymerase chain reaction methods were used. Transcripts for E-cadherin and …

Staphylococcal Enterotoxin B Primes Cytokine Secretion And Lytic Activity In Response To Native Bacterial Antigens, K. M. Mason, T. D. Dryden, Nancy J. Bigley, P. S. Fink

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Superantigens stimulate T-lymphocyte proliferation and cytokine production, but the effects of superantigen exposure on cell function within a complex, highly regulated immune response remain to be determined. In this study, we demonstrate that superantigen exposure significantly alters the murine host response to bacterial antigens in an in vitro coculture system. Two days after exposure to the superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin B, splenocytes cultured with Streptococcus mutans produced significantly greater amounts of gamma interferon (IFN-gamma) and interleukin-12 than did sham-injected controls. The majority of IFN-gamma production appeared to be CD8(+) T-cell derived since depletion of this cell type dramatically reduced the levels …

Fecal Bacteria Survival And Infiltration Through A Shallow Agricultural Soil: Timing And Tillage Effects, C. S. Stoddard, Mark S. Coyne, John H. Grove

Plant and Soil Sciences Faculty Publications

Human and livestock exposure to fecal pathogens via contaminated surface or groundwater is an important water quality concern for soils receiving animal wastes. The effects of manure application timing (spring or fall application) and soil management (no-tillage or conservation tillage) on fecal bacteria infiltration through shallow karst soils in central Kentucky (the Bluegrass region) have not been evaluated. We performed a field experiment to measure fecal coliforms and fecal streptococci in leachate from dairy manure-amended no-tillage and conservation tillage soils. Manure significantly increased fecal bacteria in leachate compared with unmanured treatments. After manure application, the leachate that collected in zero-tension …
