Sensors Forph Based On Swelling And Reflectivity Of Derivatized Polystyrene Beads And Membranes, Li Zhang
Sensors Forph Based On Swelling And Reflectivity Of Derivatized Polystyrene Beads And Membranes, Li Zhang
Doctoral Dissertations
Kraton-modified amine-derivatized poly(vinylbenzyl chloride) beads prepared by suspension polymerization are sensitive to pH. They swell in acid due to protonation of amine groups and shrink in base. Polymer swelling generates a measurable swelling signal that is related to the concentration of hydrogen ions in solution. The sensor responded to pH in the range from 6.0 to 10.0. Bead size, level of porogenic solvents and Kraton G1652 affected the magnitude of sensor response and response time.
Diethanolamine derivatized poly(VBC) membranes formulated with a small amount of Kraton G1652 reflect light. At low pH membranes turn clear. The observed optical change is …
Fixation And Incubation Effects In Problem-Solving, Marie Theresa Hansberry
Fixation And Incubation Effects In Problem-Solving, Marie Theresa Hansberry
Doctoral Dissertations
In four experiments, the effects of fixation and suppression processes in problem solving ability were investigated. Previous research has shown that efficient suppression mechanisms are integral to verbal ability (e.g., Gernsbacher & Faust, 1991; Gernsbacher, Varner, & Faust, 1990; Hartman & Hasher, 1991). The present set of experiments demonstrated that such a mechanism is also a component of problem solving ability. The efficiency with which participants were able to suppress inappropriate meanings of ambiguous words was used as a measure of suppression skill. Experiment I established that participants who were able to make use of previously-presented information to solve difficult …
Skillful Women And Jurymen: Gender And Authority In Seventeenth-Century Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Edith Murphy
Skillful Women And Jurymen: Gender And Authority In Seventeenth-Century Middlesex County, Massachusetts, Edith Murphy
Doctoral Dissertations
Through analysis of about one thousand cases that appeared before the Middlesex County, Massachusetts, court between 1649 and 1679, this dissertation asks how authority, derived from patriarchal power, operated on the day-to-day level in colonial New England society. It argues that women were integral to colonial communities and to the effective maintenance of social order. While gender determined the roles people played in colonial society, and women were subordinate to their husbands and fathers, women and men shared agency in efforts to maintain social order.
The dissertation begins by tracing the process by which cases came to the county court, …

Foreword: The ‘Right To Marry’ In The Decisions Of The United States Supreme Court, Robert A. Destro
Scholarly Articles
Given the importance of Loving in American constitutional law, we were somewhat surprised to learn that no commemorative conferences or symposia had been planned to mark the thirtieth anniversary of the decision. We designed our conference, "Law and the Politics of Marriage: Loving v. Virginia After 30 Years," to fill that gap.
The conference was held at The Catholic University of America's Columbus School of Law, 19-21 November 1997, and was co-sponsored by three institutions, each having a unique and abiding interest in the subject matter: The Catholic University of America, the Howard University School of Law, and the J. …

The Effect Of Hippotherapy On Sitting Balance In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Theresa A. Jurgens
The Effect Of Hippotherapy On Sitting Balance In Children With Cerebral Palsy, Theresa A. Jurgens
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Hippotherapy programs have grown rapidly since 1969, when the first center opened in the United States. Despite the growing enthusiasm for hippotherapy in North America, research regarding the efficacy of hippotherapy is not well documented. Literature that pertains to the therapeutic benefits of hippotherapy consists primarily of descriptive articles containing subjective reports of riding instructors, riders, parents, and therapists. Hippotherapy is proposed to develop neuromuscular control, facilitate posture, elicit righting and equilibrium reactions, provide vestibular input, and improve psychological wellbeing. While these descriptive articles have identified variables to be empirically studied, few investigators have documented the therapeutic effects of hippotherapy. …
Exercise And Pregnancy: A Guide For Health Care Professionals, Stacy L. Ripplinger
Exercise And Pregnancy: A Guide For Health Care Professionals, Stacy L. Ripplinger
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Health and fitness has become nationwide trends resulting in people of all ages making wiser choices regarding nutrition and exercise. Pregnant women are also participating in this fitness revolution to help ease the discomforts of pregnancy, maintain fitness levels, and regain their shape after delivery. These women often turn to health care providers, including physical therapists, for guidance. The purpose of this independent study, accomplished by a review of the literature, is to provide physical therapists and general health care practitioners an overview of maternal body changes, nutritional requirements, and emotional changes that occur during pregnancy, and how these factors …

Video Of Adapted Techniques To Overcome The Physical Deficits Of Children With Visual Impairments, Amy Skalsky
Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects
Blindness is a disability with far reaching effects. Many of these effects are physical and can be seen clinically in children who have been blind for much, or all, of their lives. As physical therapists, we have the technical skills to assist in reducing the effects of the functional deficits that are associated with blindness. However, we are often unaware of these deficits, or have trouble adapting our treatment techniques to fit the needs of children who are blind or have visual impairments.
The purpose of this study is to provide a video that will demonstrate techniques that are specially …
"Save The Whales" V. "Save The Makah": The Makah And The Struggle For Native Whaling, Richard Kirk Eichstaedt
"Save The Whales" V. "Save The Makah": The Makah And The Struggle For Native Whaling, Richard Kirk Eichstaedt
Animal Law Review
In 1997 the International Whaling Commission approved a quota for the Makah Indian Tribe to hunt four gray whales per year, culminating years of legal wrangling and political maneuvering by all of the concerned parties. Mr. Eichstaedl examines the history of the Makah whaling rights from the Tribe's treaty with the United States in 1855 to the present-day battles with Congress and the IWC. This unfolding story pits a species of whale once on the brink of extinction, against Native Americans re-asserting a centuries-old custom.

Article 2b As Legal Software For Electronic Contracting-Operating System Or Trojan Horse?, A. Michael Froomkin
Article 2b As Legal Software For Electronic Contracting-Operating System Or Trojan Horse?, A. Michael Froomkin
Articles
The proposed draft of Article 2B of the Uniform Commercial Code can be thought of as akin to a complex computer software suite which seeks to dominate a market by offering all things to all people. The author suggests, however, that Article 2B's electronic contracting rules interoperate poorly with existing digital signature laws, and with some forms of electronic commerce. The author also questions whether Article 2B is the proper means to enact controversial rules that ordinarily would make consumers liable for fraudulent uses of their digital signatures by third parties. After considering Article 2B's potential interaction with existing digital …

Worrying About The Civil War, Edward L. Ayers
Worrying About The Civil War, Edward L. Ayers
History Faculty Publications
There is no animosity in any of these historical or practical interpretations of the Civil War. It is clear that the North fought for purposes entirely good--for Union and the end of slavery--but Confederate soldiers also win respect for their bravery, their devotion, and their struggle against long odds. They seem to have been playing historical roles for which they are not to blame. The reenactors, the books in stores, and the battlefield tours generally avoid talking about the cause of the war, focusing instead on the common bravery and hardships of soldiers North and South.
The Determination Of The Potential Of Australian Native Plants To Phytoremediate Lead, Desmond Dev Menon
The Determination Of The Potential Of Australian Native Plants To Phytoremediate Lead, Desmond Dev Menon
Theses : Honours
Industrial activities and natural occurrences of mineral ores can both result in the presence of high concentrations of heavy metals in the soil. These toxic metals have been shown to adversely affect human health and the environment. Currently, three main technologies are being used to solve this problem of soil contamination. These are incineration, landfill construction and physico-chemical treatments. The economic and environmental costs of each of these technologies tend to outweigh the merits of their application, especially where contaminated areas are small. These techniques do not necessarily remove the heavy metals from the soil, and can also inhibit biological …
Mathilde Blind, Graham Handley
Mathilde Blind, Graham Handley
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
The first titles in the Eminent Women Series published in 1883 by W. H. Allen included studies of Emily Bronte and George Sand (Margaret Fuller, Maria Edgeworth, Elizabeth Fry, and Harriet Martineau would be in the next wave) as well as Mathilde Blind's pioneering, sensitive, uneven and sympathetically feminist exposition of George Eliot's life and art. Blind herself deserves a full-length study, and at particular points her own life and works touch those of George Eliot. Born Mathilde Cohen in Mannheim in 1841, she took her stepfather's name when her mother remarried. Dr. Karl Blind was an ardent republican in …

'My Own Dear Heart's Ease': George Eliot's Coventry Friend, Caroline (Cara) Bray (1814-1905), Kathleen Adams
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
In September 1842 Mary Ann Evans wrote a short but illuminating letter to her Coventry friend Cara Bray:
My own dear Heart's Ease [it was not unusual for her to give her closest friends the name of a flower as she had done this on several occasions before], ... your looks and words of love are so precious to me. I am together ashamed of myself - do not tell anyone that I am so silly as I appear to her whom I love best ... '
We don't know why Mary Ann was so ashamed but we do see …
Carnival And Ceremony At Wright Morris's Lone Tree Hotel, Reginald Dyck
Carnival And Ceremony At Wright Morris's Lone Tree Hotel, Reginald Dyck
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Gordon Boyd, a central character in Morris's Ceremony in Lone Tree, is a self-fashioning failure at American dreaming. He presents himself this way: "In the middle of life, Morgenstern Boyd had everything to live for, everything worth living for having eluded him. He was that rare thing, a completely selfunmade man." Failed writer among other failures, Boyd in many ways contrasts with, and is defined by, his friend and nemesis Walter McKee, a man who "like Babbitt, keeps faith; he does not question anything, especially his own life. " Set in the 1950s Midwest culture of respectability, Ceremony in …
Review Of Journal Of An Expedition To The Grand Prairies Of The Missouri 1840 By William Fairholme, Jay H. Buckley
Review Of Journal Of An Expedition To The Grand Prairies Of The Missouri 1840 By William Fairholme, Jay H. Buckley
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
William Fairholme (1819-1868), a twenty-year-old Lieutenant of the British army, and six fellow officers shared a sporting expedition to hunt buffalo on the Kansas Plains in the summer and fall of 1840. They made one of only five parties to travel the Santa Fe Trail that year, its lowest incidence between 1822 and 1843. Fairholme's journal, therefore, provides an important record of the Great Plains for the year 1840 from a British officer's perspective, particularly in its vivid descriptions of cities and towns between lower Canada and the Missouri settlements.
Fairholme tells us a lot about traveling in the 1840s. …
Review Of The Buffalo Hunters By Charles M. Robinson Iii, Ken Zontek
Review Of The Buffalo Hunters By Charles M. Robinson Iii, Ken Zontek
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Bison history captures the American imagination. Robinson capitalizes on this interest here with an entertaining narrative about buffalo hunters. The book begins with a synopsis of Native American bison hunting practices both before and after the acquisition of the horse, an animal whose impact dramatically transformed and increased indigenous dependence on the buffalo. The author moves on to address the role Native Americans played in supplying bison beef to British-Canadian fur companies and buffalo robes to their American counterparts. The story then quickly moves on to Euro-American sport hunting which reached its heyday with the completion of the transcontinental railroad. …
Review Of My Remembers: A Black Sharecropper's Recollections Of The Depression By Eddie Stimpson Jr., Alwyn Barr
Review Of My Remembers: A Black Sharecropper's Recollections Of The Depression By Eddie Stimpson Jr., Alwyn Barr
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
This volume recalls experiences during the 1930s and 1940s on farms in the Plano, Texas, area north of Dallas. Frances Wells, a local Plano historian, helped Eddie Stimpson organize into a book his written memories, intended originally for descendants. In the introduction James W. Byrd, a literary scholar, suggests the influence of African American folk culture on the writing style and on some activities described in the volume, such as yard sweeping. Popular culture phrases also appear occasionally, and the author's phonetic spelling has been retained throughout.
After an opening summary of his life, Stimpson presents short chapters on a …
Chancellor Allen And The Fundamental Question, D. Gordon Smith
Chancellor Allen And The Fundamental Question, D. Gordon Smith
Seattle University Law Review
In this article, the author explains Chancellor Allen's expansive reputation by examining his ability to speak to what philosopher John Danley calls "the fundamental question": "What is the appropriate role of the modem corporation in a free society?" From the chartering of the first corporations in the United States to the present day, debate over the fundamental question has been rancorous. On one side of the debate stand those who believe that society is best served when corporations strive to maximize profits for the benefit of shareholders; on the other side stand those who believe that corporations should have some …
Divining The Future For Faculty Development: Five Hopeful Signs And One Caveat, Marilla D. Svinicki
Divining The Future For Faculty Development: Five Hopeful Signs And One Caveat, Marilla D. Svinicki
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
The fortunes of faculty development centers rise and fall on the waves of change that roll through postsecondary education on a regular basis. These waves can swamp us, or we can ride their crest. This article points out some of the waves the author sees now and in the immediate future and how we can benefit from them. She ends with a caution about improving our chances of survival through our own efforts rather than waiting for someone else to draw us along.
The Lubbock Chamber Of Commerce, The New Deal, And The Ropesville Resettlement Project, William Clayson
The Lubbock Chamber Of Commerce, The New Deal, And The Ropesville Resettlement Project, William Clayson
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
US Highway 62 crosses the town of Ropesville, population 480, between Lubbock and Brownfield on the South Plains of Texas. To the north and west of town, scattered among the suburban-style homes of contemporary farmers, stand several dozen small cottages of identical design. Some are still occupied, many nothing more than ruins, and a few have been added on to, stuccoed, or provided a screened porch. All are surrounded by cotton fields and most are accompanied by ramshackle outbuildings, rusted tractors, dormant windmills, and sealed irrigation wells. These farmsteads are the remains of a rural community project constructed by the …
Overdue Process: Why Denial Of Physician-Prescribed Marijuana To Terminally Ill Patients Violates The United States Constitution, Matthew Segal
Overdue Process: Why Denial Of Physician-Prescribed Marijuana To Terminally Ill Patients Violates The United States Constitution, Matthew Segal
Seattle University Law Review
This Comment will begin with a brief history of the medical use of marijuana in western culture and the United States. It will then examine the existing federal statutory scheme governing the use of marijuana and conclude with a look at current beliefs about the medical value of marijuana. Section III will analyze previous attempts to collaterally attack the scheduling of marijuana through the courts and show why those efforts have generally failed. Section IV will perform a substantive due process analysis of William Cohen's case and submit that Mr. Cohen has a fundamental right to consult with his physician …

Oral Performances As Ritual: Animating The Invisible In Mormon Women's Miscarriage Stories, Kristin Leifson Ballif
Oral Performances As Ritual: Animating The Invisible In Mormon Women's Miscarriage Stories, Kristin Leifson Ballif
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is comprised of ten Mormon women's miscarriage stories and it is their stories that are used as the text for my analysis. The purpose of the study is to provide a space for these women to share their experiences and to reveal their cultural values and beliefs. Because the women are all Mormon, there are some distinctive cultural and religious values that are shared within their stories and it is these aspects that are analyzed and discussed within the text.
Women need to be able to share their miscarriage stories so as to alleviate feelings of isolation and …
