Rhetoric And The Aids Virus Hunt, Carol Reeves Jan 1998

Rhetoric And The Aids Virus Hunt, Carol Reeves

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

By comparing the papers produced by the laboratory teams of Robert Gallo and Jean Luc Montagnier during the AIDS virus hunt, we have an opportunity to discern the fine line between a bold, explicit rhetoric that may convince as well as offend and a bald, reserved rhetoric that may actually conceal important implications. Going too far in either direction may create misunderstandings and ethical dilemmas as will be demonstrated in a textual analysis deepened by an exploration of historical context and interviews with key participants. Since a public health crisis calls upon communication that thwarts misunderstandings, scientists should understand the …

Norway Rat Exclusion In Alberta, John B. Bourne Jan 1998

Norway Rat Exclusion In Alberta, John B. Bourne

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Since 1950, Alberta Agriculture has supervised and coordinated a rural-based Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) control program that has essentially kept the province rat-free. Success is achieved by eliminating invading rats within a control zone 600 km long and 30 km wide along the eastern border of the province. A systematic detection and eradication system is used throughout the zone to keep rat infestations to a minimum. Strong public support and citizen participation was developed through public education and a sound awareness effort. Although rat infestations within the interior are minor, a rat response plan is in place to …

Potential Risks Associated With The Legalization Of Exotic Predators Such As The Ferret (Mustela Putorius Furo) In California, Thomas G. Moore, Desley A. Whisson Jan 1998

Potential Risks Associated With The Legalization Of Exotic Predators Such As The Ferret (Mustela Putorius Furo) In California, Thomas G. Moore, Desley A. Whisson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

The interest in possessing ferrets as pets has given rise to controversy between the "rights" of the individual to own the pet of their choice and the concerns for protection of wildlife in California. An overview of the legislative history in California illustrates the state's attempts at protecting native wildlife species from exotic wild birds and animals. Concerns as to the potential threats associated with the legalization of ferrets in California are warranted in light of the wildlife damage resulting from the deliberate introduction of ferrets in New Zealand and the non-native red fox in California. A framework to assess …

Laboratory Efficacy Study With A Warfarin Bait To Control The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog, Jeff J. Mach Jan 1998

Laboratory Efficacy Study With A Warfarin Bait To Control The Black-Tailed Prairie Dog, Jeff J. Mach

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

Control of the black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) is important for the reclamation of pasture ground for domestic cattle and limiting the spread of disease to humans and other wildlife. Six different concentrations of warfarin bait were fed to prairie dogs to determine mortality. Without the access to dietary vitamin K, the prairie dogs were susceptible to the warfarin bait. However, some of the prairie dogs recovered and survived the test after bait exposure was terminated. This could be due to physiological differences and the availability of fat-soluble vitamin K. The six different concentrations of warfarin consumed by …

Modified Bait Stations For California Ground Squirrel Control In Endangered Kangaroo Rat Habitat, Desley A. Whisson Jan 1998

Modified Bait Stations For California Ground Squirrel Control In Endangered Kangaroo Rat Habitat, Desley A. Whisson

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 18th (1998)

California ground squirrels are a major problem in areas that also support populations of endangered kangaroo rats. Traditional bait stations can be easily modified to exclude kangaroo rats, thereby providing landowners with a method of controlling ground squirrels that mitigates hazards to endangered kangaroo rats. Specifications for the design and use of modified bait stations are discussed.

Western Writers Series Digital Editions

Caught up in the current cultural ferment involving race, sex, and ethnic identity, people tend to forget. The all-time best-selling novel in the nineteenth-century United States was an antislavery book written by a woman, and in the 1920s black writer W. E. B. Du Bois was widely celebrated by a large number of critics. Periodically over the course of the nation’s history, both as concerns the general culture and our literature specifically, what we today call minorities, and how we perceive them, have exerted huge influences, shaping much of our lives, from what we wear and eat to what we …

Environmental Assessment Caribou Timber Sale, United States Forest Service Jan 1998

Environmental Assessment Caribou Timber Sale, United States Forest Service

All U.S. Government Documents (Utah Regional Depository)

One of the decisions made in the 1985 Bighorn National Forest Land and Resource Management Plan (Forest Plan) was that timber sale offerings would be made. The Caribou timber sale was proposed in order to implement that Forest Plan allocation decision. The selection of this sale area was based upon several factors, including: Past forest management decisions and silvicultural prescriptions; the existence of a road system, which will minimize impacts upon wildlife habitat and water quality; the opportunity to change the forested vegetation to improve, or at least maintain within the Forest Plan standard and guidelines and other legal requirements, …

Contemporary Appalachian Picture Books, Judy A. Teaford

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Modern children’s literature stresses individualism and multiculturalism. The first concerns the push in children’s literature to place more emphasis on developing a child’s individuality, to celebrate individual triumph rather than communal action. This trend seems to have succeeded in its goal. As Perry Nodelman states in The Pleasures of Children’s Literature, “Surprisingly few texts for children celebrate the value of groups of people working together as equals as opposed to the power of individuals controlling groups” (121- 122). The second, and more recent trend, concerns what Ron Jobe and many other critics of children’s literature believe to be the goal …

Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Patented Monkey: Patentability Of Cloned Organisms, 16 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 971 (1998), Timothy G. Hofmeyer

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The advent of patent protection for genetically engineered inventions occurred in 1980 with the landmark Supreme Court decision in Diamond v. Chakrabarty. Following the lead of the Supreme Court, the Patent and Trademark Office ("PTO"), in 1987, issued a new regulatory ruling that expanded the PTO's statutory interpretation of 35 U.S.C. § 101 patentable subject matter to include devices based upon nonnatural occurring manufacture or composition of matter resulting from some level of human intervention in the modification of nonhuman organisms. One year following the PTO proclamation, the first patent for a transgenic animal issue to Professors Leder and Stewart …

Recombinant Human Bone Morphogenetic Protein-2 And Collagen For Bone Regeneration, Jeffrey O. Hollinger, John M. Schmitt, David C. Buck, Robert Shannon, Seong-Pil Joh, H Daniel Zegzula, John Wozney

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

The study reported describes a combination of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) and collagen (C) to regenerate bone. Unilateral critical-sized defects (CSDs) were prepared in radii of 32 skeletally mature New Zealand white rabbits. Rabbits were divided evenly among four treatments: autograft, absorbable C (Helistatt), 35 mg of rhBMP-2 combined with absorbable C (rhBMP-2/C), and untreated CSDs. The two euthanasia periods were 4 and 8 weeks. Radiographs were taken the day of surgery, every 2 weeks, and at term and the percent of radiopacity was measured. Data analysis revealed a time-dependent increase in the percent radiopacity with rhBMP-2/C. Histological …

Self-Organization Of Foraging Behaviour: From Simplicity To Complexity Without Goals, Frederick D. Provenza, Juan J. Villalba, Carl D. Cheney, Scott J. Werner Jan 1998

Self-Organization Of Foraging Behaviour: From Simplicity To Complexity Without Goals, Frederick D. Provenza, Juan J. Villalba, Carl D. Cheney, Scott J. Werner

Behavioral Education for Human, Animal, Vegetation, and Ecosystem Management (BEHAVE)

A herbivore faces challenges while foraging--ongoing changes in its physiological condition along with variation in the nutrient and toxin concentrations of foods, spatially and temporally--that make selecting a nutritious diet a vital affair. Foraging behaviours arise from simple rules that operate across levels of resolution from cells and organs to individuals and their interactions with social and physical environments. At all these levels, behaviour is a function of its consequences: a behaviour operating on the environment to induce changes is itself changed by those events. Thus, behaviour emerges from its own functioningbehaviour self-organizes-not from that of its surroundings. This ostensible …

Private Enforcement Of The Social Contract: Deshaney And The Second Amendment Right To Own Firearms, David E. Murley

Duquesne Law Review

What is the meaning of the phrase "the right to bear arms"? The United States Supreme Court has not granted certiorari to a Second Amendment case since 1939. The author suggests that the Court's ruling in DeShaney v. Winnebago County Dep't of Social Svcs. provides an important insight into Second Amendment issues that should be considered by citizens, legislators, and the Court in resolving the gun control controversy.
