The Catholic University In Modern Academe: Challenge And Dilemma, James Turner Mar 1998

The Catholic University In Modern Academe: Challenge And Dilemma, James Turner

Journal of Catholic Education

How can the Catholic university reconstruct itself to bring the resources of Catholic tradition to bear on our common task of rebuilding the house of learning? The Catholic university needs to inhabit the domain of secular learning and Christian knowledge. The participation of Catholic intellectual and universities in the postmodern dialogue will benefit the entire intellectual community.

Outrageous Fortune And The Criminalization Of Mass Torts, Richard A. Nagareda Mar 1998

Outrageous Fortune And The Criminalization Of Mass Torts, Richard A. Nagareda

Michigan Law Review

The case of the blameworthy-but-fortunate defendant has emerged as one of the most perplexing scenarios in mass tort litigation today. One need look no further than the front page of the newspaper to find examples of mass tort defendants said to have engaged in irresponsible conduct - even conduct that one might regard as morally outrageous in character - but that nonetheless advance eminently plausible contentions that they have not caused harm to others. This issue is not merely a matter for abstract speculation. A now-familiar mass tort scenario involves a defendant that markets a product without informing consumers about …

Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art, Alan D. Manning Mar 1998

Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art, Alan D. Manning

Faculty Publications

INSIGHTS about professional communication may come from odd and unexpected places. McCloud's Understanding Comics (hereafter UC) is a case in point. Despite the juvenile connotations evoked by any discussion of comic books, the theory of visual communication presented in UC arguably rivals the best of contemporary semiotics (that is, the study of how we make meaning out of gestures, words, paragraphs, pictures, and so on).

Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection In The Female Reproductive Tract Of The Rat: Influence Of Progesterone On Infectivity And Immune Response, Charu Kaushic, Andrew D. Murdin, Brian J. Underdown, Charles R. Wira Mar 1998

Chlamydia Trachomatis Infection In The Female Reproductive Tract Of The Rat: Influence Of Progesterone On Infectivity And Immune Response, Charu Kaushic, Andrew D. Murdin, Brian J. Underdown, Charles R. Wira

Dartmouth Scholarship

As the most common cause of sexually transmitted disease in women, chlamydial infections can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy. To better understand the role played by sex hormones in modulating the immune response of the genital tract to microbial infections, we have developed a rat model to study Chlamydia trachomatis infection. Inbred female Lewis rats were primed with progesterone and inoculated by intrauterine instillation of C. trachomatis (mouse pneumonitis strain MoPn) into each uterine horn. When infected animals were examined for the presence of chlamydial antigens 14 days postinfection, both the uterus and vagina were found …

Overexpression Of Glyoxalase-I In Bovine Endothelial Cells Inhibits Intracellular Advanced Glycation Endproduct Formation And Prevents Hyperglycemia-Induced Increases In Macromolecular Endocytosis., Moritsugu Shinohara, P J. Overexpression Of Glyoxalase-I In Bovine Endothelial Cells Inhibits Intracellular Advanced Glycation Endproduct Formation And Prevents Hyperglycemia-Induced Increases In Macromolecular Endocytosis., Moritsugu Shinohara, P J. Thornalley, Ida Giardino, Paul Beisswenger, Suzanne R. Thorpe, Joelle Onorato, Michael Brownlee

Dartmouth Scholarship

Methylglyoxal (MG), a dicarbonyl compound produced by the fragmentation of triose phosphates, forms advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) in vitro. Glyoxalase-I catalyzes the conversion of MG to S-D-lactoylglutathione, which in turn is converted to D-lactate by glyoxalase-II. To evaluate directly the effect of glyoxalase-I activity on intracellular AGE formation, GM7373 endothelial cells that stably express human glyoxalase-I were generated. Glyoxalase-I activity in these cells was increased 28-fold compared to neo-transfected control cells (21.80+/-0.1 vs. 0. 76+/-0.02 micromol/min/mg protein, n = 3, P < 0.001). In neo-transfected cells, 30 mM glucose incubation increased MG and D-lactate concentration approximately twofold above 5 MM (35.5+/-5.8 vs. 19.6+/-1.6, P < 0.02, n = 3, and 21.0+/-1.3 vs. 10.0+/-1.2 pmol/ 10(6) cells, n = 3, P < 0.001, respectively). In contrast, in glyoxalase-I-transfected cells, 30 mM glucose incubation did not increase MG concentration at all, while increasing the enzymatic product D-lactate by > 10-fold (18.9+/-3.2 vs. 18.4+/- 5.8, n = 3, P = NS, and 107.1+/-9.0 vs. 9.4+/-0 pmol/10(6) cells, n = …

Justifying Public Decisions In Arctic Oil And Gas Development: American And Russian Approaches, Nicholas E. Flanders, Rex V. Brown, Yelena Andre'eva, Oleg Larichev Feb 1998

Justifying Public Decisions In Arctic Oil And Gas Development: American And Russian Approaches, Nicholas E. Flanders, Rex V. Brown, Yelena Andre'eva, Oleg Larichev

Dartmouth Scholarship

Government resource decisions in the Arctic typically involve complex issues; multiple criteria are used to choose among alternatives. This complexity is even greater with petroleum development because of concerns about national energy security, environmental impacts, and economic development. Two decision-aiding techniques may help decision makers clarify their decisions to themselves, the stakeholders, and the general public. The Russian qualitative technique seeks to reduce the number of criteria and find alternative options that may be better than the initial ones. The Western quantitative technique seeks to measure the decision maker* s judgement about the utility and certainty of each option. These …

Development, Reproductive Capacity And Survival Of Amblyomma Variegatum And Boophilus Decoloratus In Relation To Host Resistance And Climatic Factors Under Field Conditions, G. Solomon, G. P. Kaaya Feb 1998

Development, Reproductive Capacity And Survival Of Amblyomma Variegatum And Boophilus Decoloratus In Relation To Host Resistance And Climatic Factors Under Field Conditions, G. Solomon, G. P. Kaaya

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

To determine the developmental periods, fecundity and survival of Amblyomma variegatum and Boophilus decoloratus and the effect of host resistance, a study was carried out in the field at Abemossa ranch in Ethiopia using three breeds of cattle: Arssi, Baran and Baran X Friesian crossbreed. The investigation took place between October 1991 and September 1992. The developmental periods of both tick species were recorded. The hatching periods of larvae, engorgement, larvo-nymphal and nympho-adult moulting periods during various climatic seasons in shaded and dry areas were also recorded. While the engorgement periods recorded on the animal were relatively constant for each …
