Inventory And Characterization Of The Riparian Zone Of The Current And Jacks Fork Rivers, Jonathan Lyon, Cynthia L. Sagers Mar 1998

Inventory And Characterization Of The Riparian Zone Of The Current And Jacks Fork Rivers, Jonathan Lyon, Cynthia L. Sagers

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The ecological, recreational, and economic value of the 134 mile (216 km) riparian corridor within the Ozark National Scenic Riverways (ONSR) is of great interest to land managers and conservationists. Recent interest in applying ecosystem management to forest systems has necessitated a fresh look at the tools and methods in use to assess existing patterns of plant community structure and diversity. The purpose and objective of the study described in this report was to initiate a series of vegetation studies that could be integrated with existing research and management infonnation on the riparian vegetation in the ONSR. Defining the compositional …

Extracellular Signal-Regulated Kinase And P38 Subgroups Of Mitogen-Activated Protein Kinases Regulate Inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase And Tumor Necrosis Factor-Α Gene Expression In Endotoxin-Stimulated Primary Glial Cultures, Narayan R. Bhat, Pelsheng Zhang, John C. Lee, Edward L. Hogan

MUSC Faculty Journal Articles

Tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) and nitric oxide (NO), the product of inducible NO synthase (iNOS), mediate inflammatory and immune responses in the CNS under a variety of neuropathological situations. They are produced mainly by “activated” astrocytes and microglia, the two immune regulatory cells of the CNS. In this study we have examined the regulation of TNFα and iNOS gene expression in endotoxin-stimulated primary glial cultures, focusing on the role of mitogen-activated protein (MAP) kinase cascades. The bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was able to activate extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and p38 kinase subgroups of MAP kinases in microglia and astrocytes. ERK activation …

Protecting Our Vital Organs: The Case For Fetal Homicide Laws In Texas, Annissa R. Obasi Mar 1998

Protecting Our Vital Organs: The Case For Fetal Homicide Laws In Texas, Annissa R. Obasi

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

This Comment argues that Texas should provide protection for viable fetuses by recognizing criminal liability of a third party for fetal injury resulting in death. Part I explores the development of fetal rights in the common law and examines modern trends in the recognition of fetal homicide. Part II analyzes fetal rights in Texas and highlights the inconsistencies in various areas of Texas law with respect to rights granted to the unborn. Finally, Part III proposes changes to the law in Texas to incorporate criminal liability of a third party for fetal homicide into the Texas penal system. This Comment …

Utah's Iosepa, Polynesian Beauty In The Desert, Dennis Atkin Mar 1998

Utah's Iosepa, Polynesian Beauty In The Desert, Dennis Atkin

Mormon Pacific Historical Society

Many of the articles in newspapers, journals and magazines which have been published during the past forty or forty five years about the Polynesian Colony of Iosepa, Skull Valley, Tooele County, Utah, have emphasized extreme sympathy for the colonists. These writers have deplored the bleakness of the location of this town and its immediate surroundings as contrasted with the beautiful green farming lands and towns in other areas of northern Utah. In Skull Valley the farming areas were smaller and the desolate areas were larger than in other places they have seen. In some of the nearby areas of lower …

Vocal Response To Pain In Piglets, Daniel M. Weary, Leah A. Braithwaite, David Fraser Mar 1998

Vocal Response To Pain In Piglets, Daniel M. Weary, Leah A. Braithwaite, David Fraser

Farm Animal Welfare Collection

Three experiments were performed attempting to establish the validity of vocal measures as an indicator of the immediate response to pain in domestic piglets. Vocalisations were measured while piglets were subjected to the routine farm practice of castration without anaesthetic, or restrained identically but not castrated (i.e., sham-castrated). In Experiment 1 we measured how calling changed during the different stages of the procedure, and in Experiments 2 and 3 we measured the effect of different restraint techniques. Piglets that were castrated produced significantly more high frequency calls ( >1000 Hz) than sham castrates in all three experiments. In Experiment 1, …
