Adenovirus Preterminal Protein Binds To The Cad Enzyme At Active Sites Of Viral Dna Replication On The Nuclear Matrix, Peter C. Angeletti, Jeffrey A. Engler Apr 1998

Adenovirus Preterminal Protein Binds To The Cad Enzyme At Active Sites Of Viral Dna Replication On The Nuclear Matrix, Peter C. Angeletti, Jeffrey A. Engler

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

Adenovirus (Ad) replicative complexes form at discrete sites on the nuclear matrix (NM) via an interaction mediated by the precursor of the terminal protein (pTP). The identities of cellular proteins involved in these complexes have remained obscure. We present evidence that pTP binds to a multifunctional pyrimidine biosynthesis enzyme found at replication domains on the NM. Far-Western blotting identified proteins of 150 and 240 kDa that had pTP binding activity. Amino acid sequencing of the 150-kDa band revealed sequence identity to carbamyl phosphate synthetase I (CPS I) and a high degree of homology to the related trifunctional enzyme known as …

Characterization Of Swinepox Virus Secretory Polypeptides, Takeshi Shimamura Apr 1998

Characterization Of Swinepox Virus Secretory Polypeptides, Takeshi Shimamura

Masters Theses

Swinepox virus (SPV) is the only known member of the genus Suispoxvirus. SPV causes a mild disease in swine characterized by slight fever, and weight loss, associated with lesions restricted to the skin. There have been few studies on SPV. Other poxviruses, such as vaccinia virus, have been well characterized and the biological activities of their secretory polypeptides have been analyzed. This study describes a major SPV secretory polypeptide with an apparent molecular mass of 35kDa. Poxvirus encoded polypeptides secreted during infection are known to exhibit immunomodulatory activities. The 35kDa SPV secretory polypeptide was tested.for its ability to inhibit …

Perceptions About The Environment From The Cayo District Of Belize, Jeanie Vincent Apr 1998

Perceptions About The Environment From The Cayo District Of Belize, Jeanie Vincent

Student Work

Land use from associated exponential human population growth is causing dynamic and destructive changes on the Earth's surface. Before land use management can be modified to conserve our remaining global resources, however, a better understanding is needed of how physical and social land use aspects interact. This social science research was conducted to answer the research question of 'what variations in perception exist among three categories of the social construct; Local Workers, Land Owners/Managers, and Tourists in the Cayo District of Belize. Also examined were pertinent background factors and individual characteristics involved in perception and relationship formation such as social …

Promoting Economic Development Of An Urban Area Using A Web-Based Gis, Clifford J. Todd Apr 1998

Promoting Economic Development Of An Urban Area Using A Web-Based Gis, Clifford J. Todd

Student Work

A GIS (geographic information system) is an excellent tool for spatial data analysis and associated database functions. However, a GIS has long been viewed as being practiced “behind closed doors” and only by those with extensive training. Currently, there are a number of ways to work with GIS data, but very few ways to present the data to large groups of people. Providing information from a GIS to people outside of a group or organization is difficult but essential. For example, urban or regional areas can promote economic development by making this information available to investors or prospective residents from …

Service Learning On The Information Superhighway, Bonnie Bracey

Service Learning, General

The Information Superhighway is more than the Internet. It is a series of components, including the collection of...high-speed, interactive...networks that exist today and will emerge tomorrow. It is the satellite, terrestrial, and wireless technologies....It is the information and content that flow over the infrastructure....It is the computers, televisions, telephones, radios, and other products....It is the people who will provide, manage, and generate new information....And it is the individual Americans who will use and benefit from the Information Superhighway. The Information Superhighway...encompasses all these components and captures the vision of a nationwide, invisible, seamless, dynamic web of transmission mechanisms, information, appliances, …

Coping With "Loss": A Re-Examination Of Sentencing Federal Economic Crimes Under The Guidelines, Frank O. Bowman, Iii Apr 1998

Coping With "Loss": A Re-Examination Of Sentencing Federal Economic Crimes Under The Guidelines, Frank O. Bowman, Iii

Vanderbilt Law Review

The primary determinant of sentence length for federal economic criminals is the amount of "loss" resulting from an offender's conduct.' The idea of basing sentences for economic crimes primarily on "loss" has become the source of ongoing, complex, and proliferating disputes about what the term "loss" really means and how it should be interpreted in particular cases. The "loss" calculation is one of the most frequently litigated issues in federal sentencing law. There are at present splits of opinion between the federal circuits on at least eleven analytically distinct issues concerning the meaning and application of the "loss" concept. Even …

Exile On Campus, Barbara Stark Apr 1998

Exile On Campus, Barbara Stark

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Almost ten years ago at the AALS Faculty Recruitment Conference Marina Angel gave a heartening talk to those of us seeking law teaching jobs. She opened the floor for questions, and one aspiring law teacher dared to ask aloud what we were all wondering: "How many of us will actually getjobs in law teaching?" We waited for the number, the percentage, the cutoff. Instead, cryptically, Angel replied, "For many of you, that will depend on how flexible you're willing to be. Some people are limited to a particular area, but many of us are very happy in places we never …

Is Tobacco A Drug? Administrative Agencies As Common Law Courts, Cass R. Sunstein Apr 1998

Is Tobacco A Drug? Administrative Agencies As Common Law Courts, Cass R. Sunstein

Duke Law Journal

Professor Cass Sunstein argues that the FDA has the authority to regulate tobacco products. He considers the text of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, which supports the FDA assertion, and the context of its enactment, which argues against the FDA. He resolves the tension between text and context in favor of FDA jurisdiction by turning to the emerging role of administrative agencies. In modern government, he contends, administrative agencies have become America's common law courts, with the power to adapt statutory regimes to new facts and new values when the underlying statute is ambiguous. Professor Sunstein's Article, like …

The Destruction Of The Brazilian Amazon: An International Problem, Jacqueline Klosek Apr 1998

The Destruction Of The Brazilian Amazon: An International Problem, Jacqueline Klosek

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The destruction of the Brazilian Amazon is a global environmental crisis necessitating international cooperation and responsibility, particularly from developed nations, due to its far-reaching consequences for biodiversity, climate change, and human rights. The note argues that while Brazil bears primary responsibility, the international community, especially developed countries, must assist in addressing the issue due to their historical and ongoing contributions to the problem.

Thin-Layer Prestressed Composite Ferroelectric Driver And Sensor Characterization With Application To Separation Flow Control, Karla M. Mossi Apr 1998

Thin-Layer Prestressed Composite Ferroelectric Driver And Sensor Characterization With Application To Separation Flow Control, Karla M. Mossi

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Experiments were conducted in two different stages--general piezoelectric actuator characterization and flow separation control applications. The characterization of the piezoelectric devices was performed in several stages, due to the many variables that affect performance. The first stage of the characterization consisted of tests conducted on 13 different THUNDERTM (thin-layer composite unimorph ferroelectric driver and sensor) configurations. These configurations consisted of a combination of 1, 3, 5, 7, and 9 layers of 25μ thick aluminum as backing material, with and without a top layer of 25μ aluminum. All of these configurations used the same piezoelectric ceramic wafer (PZT-5A) with dimensions …
