Molecular Cloning, Expression, And Characterization Of Novel Human Sultic Sulfotransferases That Catalyze The Sulfonation Of N-Hydroxy-2- Acetylaminofluorene, Yoichi Sakakibara, Ken Yanagisawa, Junko Katafuchi, David P. Molecular Cloning, Expression, And Characterization Of Novel Human Sultic Sulfotransferases That Catalyze The Sulfonation Of N-Hydroxy-2- Acetylaminofluorene, Yoichi Sakakibara, Ken Yanagisawa, Junko Katafuchi, David P. Ringers, Yasunari Takami, Tatsuo Nakayama, Masahito Suiko, Ming-Cheh Liu

School of Medical and Biological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Upon sulfonation, carcinogenic hydroxyarylamines such as N-hydroxy-2-acetylaminofluorene (N-OH-2AAF) can be further activated to form ultimate carcinogens in vivo. Previous studies have shown that a SULT1C1 sulfotransferase is primarily responsible for the sulfonation of N-OH-2AAF in rat liver. In the present study, two novel human sulfotransferases shown to be members of the SULT1C sulfotransferase subfamily based on sequence analysis have been cloned, expressed, and characterized. Comparisons of the deduced amino acid sequence encoded by the human SULT1C sulfotransferase cDNA 1 reveal 63.7, 61.6, and 85.1% identity to the amino acid sequences of rat SULT1C1 sulfotransferase, mouse SULT1C1 sulfotransferase, and rabbit SULT1C …

Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Predation On Sediment- And Stem-Dwelling Meiofauna: Field And Laboratory Experiments, Christopher S. Gregg, John W. Fleeger Dec 1998

Grass Shrimp Palaemonetes Pugio Predation On Sediment- And Stem-Dwelling Meiofauna: Field And Laboratory Experiments, Christopher S. Gregg, John W. Fleeger

Faculty Publications

Field and laboratory experiments were conducted to clarify the predatory role of Palaemonetes pugio Holthius in salt-marsh benthic communities. Field experiments (cage enclosures using P. pugio as a predator) were conducted on unvegetated mudflat and vegetated-marsh sites. Neither sediment- or stem-dwelling meiofaunal abundances were significantly impacted. Laboratory experiments measured the functional response of P. pugio feeding on suspended harpacticoid copepods, tested the efficiency of P. pugio feeding on harpacticoids in sediments, and measured the predation rate of P. pugio on stem-dwelling meiofauna. Grass shrimp feeding rate on suspended copepods followed a type II functional response, increasing with increasing prey density …

Heterogeneity And Bias In Abundance Estimates Of Outmigrating Chinook Salmon In The Chena River, Alaska, Ted M. Lambert Dec 1998

Heterogeneity And Bias In Abundance Estimates Of Outmigrating Chinook Salmon In The Chena River, Alaska, Ted M. Lambert

Fisheries

The objective was to examine bias due to heterogeneity in capture probability (p) in an abundance estimate for chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tschawytscha) outmigrants in the Chena River, Alaska. A higher proportion of day-marked fish (21 / 636 = 0.0330) compared to night-marked fish (17 / 1724 = 0.0098; p<0.0001, α=0.05) was recaptured at the lower site in a Cormack-Jolly-Seber experiment with upper, middle and lower sites. Heterogeneity was also likely at the middle site between upper site-marked and unmarked fish. Simulations with heterogeneity confined to the middle and lower sites (i.e., due to inadequate mixing) caused small bias (<2.5%) in the upper site abundance estimate. With heterogeneity at all three sites (a subpopulation effect), the upper site estimate had 22.9% to 29.3% negative bias. Because heterogeneity observed in the Chena was probably due to inadequate mixing (related to daytime trap evasion), bias in the upper site estimate was probably small.

Endangered And Threatened Wildlife And Plants: Final Rule To List The Topeka Shiner As Endangered

Endangered Species Bulletin

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service determines the Topeka shiner (Notropis topeka) to be an endangered species under the authority of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended (16 U.S.C. 1531 et seq.). The Topeka shiner is a small fish presently known from small tributary streams in the Kansas and Cottonwood river basins in Kansas; the Missouri, Grand, Lamine, Chariton, and Des Moines river basins in Missouri; the North Raccoon and Rock river basins in Iowa; the James, Big Sioux and Vermillion river watersheds in South Dakota; and, the Rock and Big Sioux river watersheds in Minnesota. …

Recent Northern Records Of The Nine-Banded Armadillo (Dasypodidae) In Nebraska, Patricia W. Freeman, Hugh H. Genoways Dec 1998

Recent Northern Records Of The Nine-Banded Armadillo (Dasypodidae) In Nebraska, Patricia W. Freeman, Hugh H. Genoways

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Examination of the distribution of nine-banded armadillo in Nebraska reveals that these animals may be entering the state from two directions. The animals in Chase, Dundy, and Furnas counties appear to be closely associated with the Republican River and its tributaries and probably reached the state along these riparian habitats from northwestern Kansas and northeastern Colorado. Records in the central and eastern part of Nebraska are not closely tied to one river system. For the specimen from Ord to have followed watercourses, it would have needed to follow the Big or Little Blue rivers, crossed to the Platte River, and …

How Pigs' Blood Could Save Lives: Canadian Study Could End Need For Human Donations, Allison Hanes, Randy Boswell Dec 1998

How Pigs' Blood Could Save Lives: Canadian Study Could End Need For Human Donations, Allison Hanes, Randy Boswell

Data and Test Instruments

Dr. [Vivian McAlister] agrees that the risk of inter-species infection remains a key obstacle to producing safe pigblood products for people: "The most important thing is that the safety of this sort of thing has to be thoroughly assessed before any implementation. We're dealing more with the immunological barriers, not the infectious disease," he says of his research. "However, if the infectious risks were overcome, or they were understood, an animal source for blood donation" could revolutionize blood-supply services around the world, he says. Currently mired in a depressed pork market that is threatening to put many producers out of …
