Distribution And Environmental Fate Of Pesticides In Prairie Wetlands, L. Gordon Goldsborough, William G. Crumpton Apr 1998

Distribution And Environmental Fate Of Pesticides In Prairie Wetlands, L. Gordon Goldsborough, William G. Crumpton

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

There is abundant, albeit fragmentary, evidence that prairie wetlands are being contaminated extensively by agricultural pesticides (primarily herbicides and insecticides) and other anthropogenic contaminants. Such inputs can affect fundamental ecosystem properties such as primary production which, in turn, affects habitat and resource supply for wetland fauna. We review data on the use of pesticides, off-site transport of residues from treated land, and the frequency with which these residues are subsequently detected in receiving streams and wetlands on the prairies. As the environmental distribution of a pesticide is affected by its chemical and physical properties, and the abiotic and biotic characteristics …

Decision-Making For Prairie Wetland Restorations, Susan M. Galatowitsch, Arnold G. Van Der Valk, Rachel Budelsky Apr 1998

Decision-Making For Prairie Wetland Restorations, Susan M. Galatowitsch, Arnold G. Van Der Valk, Rachel Budelsky

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Assessments of wetland restorations in the prairie region are not done routinely and no accepted assessment framework exists. Wetland assessment protocols in the U.s. have varied over time from those emphasizing social significance to those attempting to quantify functions of wetlands from hydrogeomorphic considerations. A conceptual framework for restoration decision-making is presented that is based on optimizing wetland restoration success at both the landscape and site scales. This framework uses societal concerns, knowledge of factors that limit ecosystem recovery, and data on losses of different types of wetlands locally and regionally to establish restoration goals and guide site selection. These …

Review Of Mountains And Plains: The Ecology Of Wyoming Landscapes By Dennis H. Knight, David M. Armstrong Apr 1998

Review Of Mountains And Plains: The Ecology Of Wyoming Landscapes By Dennis H. Knight, David M. Armstrong

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Wyoming is a remarkable place, a showcase for ecological pattern and process; and this is an excellent book with an exceptional range of information, a book appropriate in vision to its magnificent subject. Dennis Knight has produced a wide-ranging general ecology, sure to be effective as a college-level textbook not only in Wyoming, but across the Great Plains, the Rockies, and even the Great Basin. Despite its title, it is not stubbornly or even preponderantly about landscape ecology. Read "landscape" in a panoramic, common sense way rather than as a technical term. The book treats ecology on many scales: bioregions, …

Gendered Landscapes Synergism Of Place And Person In Canadian Prairie Drama, Anne F. Nothof Apr 1998

Gendered Landscapes Synergism Of Place And Person In Canadian Prairie Drama, Anne F. Nothof

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

In an attempt to realize the relationship of character and landscape, recent Canadian Prairie drama has moved beyond the confines of theatrical space through a metaphysical evocation of place and time. The prairies are configured as an imaginative projection of the human psyche, expressed through images that are themselves a reflection of an interaction of human and elemental forces. In the works of three women playwrights in particular Gwen Pharis Ringwood's Mirage, Sharon Pollock's Generations, and Connie Gault's Sky and The Soft Eclipse, character has metonymic resonance: it is contiguous with place and time. The relationship with …

Review Of A Cowboy Writer In New Mexico: The Memoirs Of John L. Sinclair By John Sinclair, Ben E. Pingenot

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

John Sinclair was the author of four unique grassroots novels: In Time of Harvest; Death in the Claimshack; Cousin Drewey and the Holy Twister; and The Night the Bear Came off the Mountain. In addition he published numerous articles and short stories in the New Mexico Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, and other journals. Throughout all his writings runs the thread of his love of the land and the simple, earthy people native to it.

Sinclair was born in New York City in 1902. His father was the son of a wealthy and aristocratic family in northern Scotland. …

Review Of American Frontiers: Cultural Encounters And Continental Conquest By Gregory H. Nobles, Kirk Bane Apr 1998

Review Of American Frontiers: Cultural Encounters And Continental Conquest By Gregory H. Nobles, Kirk Bane

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

Gregory H. Nobles has produced a thoughtful, clearly written, thoroughly researched survey offering "an interpretive synthesis of recent [frontier] scholarship." Using the studies of such scholars as J ames Axtell, Alfred W. Crosby, John Mack Faragher, Julie Roy Jeffrey, Robert M. Utley, and Patricia Limerick, Nobles proposes "to summarize and synthesize this remarkable new research, to connect the frontier histories of the East and West ... and, above all, to put it all into a coherent, accessible narrative." The author admirably accomplishes his aim.

His introduction provides an excellent discussion of Frederick Jackson Turner and the frontier thesis. While the …

Women Writing About Farm Women, Becky Faber Apr 1998

Women Writing About Farm Women, Becky Faber

Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)

I spent the first sixteen years of my life on Iowa farms. We lived in rural Adair County, Iowa, in an area that was remote, quietly tucked about halfway between Des Moines and Omaha. All I knew was rural life. My parents were farmers, my grandparents were farmers, and most of my uncles and aunts were farmers. The farm determined many elements of my life. We raised much of our own food, butchered our own beef and pork, raised chickens for eggs and meat, milked cows and sold the cream, wore clothes that defined our tasks such as overalls and …

Review Of Common Flora Of The Playa Lakes By David A. Haukos And Loren M. Smith, Kelly W. Allred Apr 1998

Review Of Common Flora Of The Playa Lakes By David A. Haukos And Loren M. Smith, Kelly W. Allred

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Common Flora of the Playa Lakes is a photo-guide to the common plants of the playa wetlands of the Southern Great Plains (southeastern Colorado, southwestern Kansas, western Oklahoma, eastern New Mexico, and northwest Texas). The authors state their objectives are to provide "a quick, accurate, photographic guide to common plant species found in playa wetlands," as well as "a comprehensive list of plant species found in playas," and a "baseline dataset that researchers can use to evaluate future changes in playa floral communities." They have succeeded on all three counts.

Hydrologic Functions Of Prairie Wetlands, James W. Labaugh, Thomas C. Winter, Donald O. Rosenberry Apr 1998

Hydrologic Functions Of Prairie Wetlands, James W. Labaugh, Thomas C. Winter, Donald O. Rosenberry

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Wetlands in the prairie known as potholes or sloughs represent an ever-changing mosaic of surface waters interacting with the atmosphere, groundwater, and each other in a variety of ways. Studies of groups of adjacent wetlands in different parts of the glaciated North American prairie have enabled some connections to be made between hydrologic processes, biological communities, and use of these wetlands by wetland-dependent wildlife. Understanding controls on variability in water levels, water volume, and salinity in these wetlands sets the stage for understanding controls on biological communities utilizing these wetlands. The role that natural variability in water and salinity plays …

Review Of Paleoindian Geoarchaeology Of The Southern High Plains By Vance T. Holliday, Berkley Bailey Apr 1998

Review Of Paleoindian Geoarchaeology Of The Southern High Plains By Vance T. Holliday, Berkley Bailey

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Written in a clear, concise manner and profusely illustrated, Vance Holliday's book introduces the serious student of geoarchaeology to the variety and complexity of twenty Paleoindian archaeological sites on the Southern High Plains. A logical sequence of chapters begins with an engaging regional history of Paleoindian geoarchaeological research, followed by comprehensive discussions of the geomorphology, stratigraphy, soils, Late Pleistocene paleoenvironments, and geochronology, jointly presenting Paleoindian archaeological sites as much more than collections of stone tools and extinct animal bones. Holliday includes good summaries of lithic and faunal data for each archaeological site discussed in the text.

Following the presentation of …

Review Of Collecting The Natural World: Legal Requirements And Personal Liability For Collecting Plants, Animals, Rocks, Minerals And Fossils By Donald Wolberg And Patsy Reinard, Gregory Brown Apr 1998

Review Of Collecting The Natural World: Legal Requirements And Personal Liability For Collecting Plants, Animals, Rocks, Minerals And Fossils By Donald Wolberg And Patsy Reinard, Gregory Brown

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Collecting the Natural World is, in the authors' words, an attempt to "provide a practical guideline to the maze of regulations and possible liabilities which confront the collector" of natural objects in the United States. To achieve this lofty goal would require uncommon knowledge of multiple scientific disciplines, objectivity, and thorough research into myriad laws and regulations. Unfortunately, this work generally fails to meet its goal and suffers from a pervasive lack of objectivity.

Six paired chapters, the body of the book, review federal and state laws and agencies regulating collecting of three broad groups of natural objects: archeological; paleontological …

Effects Of Atmospheric Change And Agriculture On The Biogeochemistry And Microbial Ecology Of Prairie Wetlands, Richard D. Robarts, Marley J. Waiser Apr 1998

Effects Of Atmospheric Change And Agriculture On The Biogeochemistry And Microbial Ecology Of Prairie Wetlands, Richard D. Robarts, Marley J. Waiser

Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)

Relatively little is known about the factors which regulate in water biogeochemical processes and food chains in prairie wetlands. Climatic warming, increased UV-radiation and agricultural activities will have interacting effects on these wetlands. We examined the effects of these processes on prairie wetland functioning and productivity with particular emphasis on production and cycling of organic carbon, especially dissolved organic carbon (DOC). Autotrophic and heterotrophic production are temperature dependent and temperature increases or decreases could affect production under more extreme climate change scenarios. DOC concentrations could decrease with increasing bacterial production and photolysis, leading to increases in UV-radiation penetration. This is …
