Molecular Phylogenetics Of Arvicoline Rodents, Christopher John Conroy Apr 1998

Molecular Phylogenetics Of Arvicoline Rodents, Christopher John Conroy

Biological Sciences

The impetus for this dissertation was an interest in geographic variation in Microtus longicaudus with a particular focus on populations in the Alexander Archipelago of southeastern Alaska. To establish a framework for interpreting intraspecific variation in M. longicaudus, I examined the phylogenetics of 28 species of the genus Microtus, including all North American species (Chapters 2 and 4). That study, which corroborates a rapid pulse of diversification noted in the fossil record, necessitated a deeper phylogenetic perspective. Thus, a third objective of the dissertation was to investigate relationships among genera of arvicolines within the framework of other murid rodents. I …

Alaska Research Natural Areas. 4: Big Windy Hot Springs, Glenn Patrick Juday Apr 1998

Alaska Research Natural Areas. 4: Big Windy Hot Springs, Glenn Patrick Juday

Miscellaneous Publications

The 65 ha Big Windy Hot Springs Research Natural Area (RNA) in the Steese National Conservation Area of central Alaska is managed by the Bureau of Land Management. It contains a vent that issues hot water at about 61° C flowing at about 8 liters per minute from the largest of a system of small springs and seeps. Geothermal water seeping over the face of a cliff has intensely weathered the local granitic bedrock into gruss. The fracture of massive boulders from the possibly fault-related cliff is one of the most distinctive features of the RNA. Small boulders from the …

Twentieth Century Inupiaq Eskimo Reindeer Herding On Northern Seward Peninsula, Alaska, James Johnson Simon Apr 1998

Twentieth Century Inupiaq Eskimo Reindeer Herding On Northern Seward Peninsula, Alaska, James Johnson Simon

Anthropology

Domesticated reindeer were introduced to Alaska from the Russian Far East at the end of the nineteenth century as a project in social engineering designed to assist in the assimilation of Alaska Natives into Euroamerican society. Most previous discussions of Alaska Native reindeer herding have focused on reindeer introduction as an agent of culture change associated with culture contact and economic modernization. This diachronic study of more than a century of Bering Strait Inupiaq reindeer herding, however, demonstrates that reindeer herding was incorporated into traditional Inupiaq culture and society to the extent that it now helps to maintain and reproduce …

Boreal Forest Regeneration Dynamics: Modeling Early Forest Establishment Patterns In Interior Alaska, Terry Scott Rupp Apr 1998

Boreal Forest Regeneration Dynamics: Modeling Early Forest Establishment Patterns In Interior Alaska, Terry Scott Rupp

Forest Sciences

Ecological processes are responsible for vegetation trajectory within the boreal forest landscape of interior Alaska. The reproductive response of boreal forest to disturbance controls vegetation trajectory. Boreal forest reproduction dynamics are influenced by both biotic and abiotic factors, acting upon the spatio-temporal dynamics of the landscape. Understanding these factors and how the boreal forest responds, both spatially and temporally, is critical for the development of accurate models of regional and global vegetation dynamics. I developed a geographic model of the early post-disturbance seedling regeneration pattern of upland white spruce ecosystems in interior Alaska. The model was developed and runs within …

Mapping Impacts Of Education For Wilderness Management Planning, Frederick Anthony Foster Apr 1998

Mapping Impacts Of Education For Wilderness Management Planning, Frederick Anthony Foster

Theses (Unassigned)

Wilderness education is considered a key response to abate physical impacts caused by wilderness recreationists, but education's impacts upon the psychological values of wilderness are unknown. This investigation used a wilderness purism scale to measure how minimum impact instruction affects the intensity and quality of a student's wilderness experience and the relation of these expectations and preferences to appreciation, knowledge, and concern for the environment as a whole, i.e., environmental literacy. A wilderness purism scale, a spatial scale, and wilderness management scale measured how wilderness education affects recreationists' limits of unacceptability in wilderness conditions. Effects of wilderness education on multiple …

Evaluating Interpretive Programs, Donald Cameron Pendergrast Apr 1998

Evaluating Interpretive Programs, Donald Cameron Pendergrast

Theses (Unassigned)

In the face of budgetary shortfalls there needs to be more, not less interpretive program evaluation. Direct evaluation includes the visitor in the evaluation process. Focus groups were tested to achieve direct evaluation for three types of evaluation: front-end, formative, and summative. These tests led to a simplified focus group technique that combines the evaluation objectives, questioning schedule, data recording, analysis, and reporting into one working document resulting in a more efficient and effective method. The Synthesized Model for integrating evaluation and the program development process is presented. The model links the three types of evaluation to appropriate program development …

Biological Impacts And Recovery From Marine Disposal Of Metal Mining Waste, Edward R. Kline Apr 1998

Biological Impacts And Recovery From Marine Disposal Of Metal Mining Waste, Edward R. Kline

Marine Biology

Waste from coastal, metal mining operations may be disposed of in the ocean. Studies were conducted using tailings and wastewater (effluent) from a proposed gold mine that is located near Juneau, Alaska, USA. The ability of invertebrates to colonize tailings after obliteration by submarine tailings disposal (STD) was assessed through a field experiment. Trays of tailings and reference sediment were placed on the sea floor and retrieved over a 22 month period. The taxonomic composition, abundance, and biomass of invertebrates that colonized tailings and reference sediment were similar. Therefore, recolonization of invertebrates after obliteration by STD should not be inhibited …

An Overview Of Alaska's Natural Assets - Main Report And Research Summary, Eric Larson Apr 1998

An Overview Of Alaska's Natural Assets - Main Report And Research Summary, Eric Larson

ISER Reports

Alaska’s natural assets kept Native people alive for centuries, drew fortune-hunters here in the 1800s, and sustain the modern economy. But what are all these “natural assets,” how abundant are they, and what is their value? The Alaska Conservation Alliance contracted with ISER to sketch the big picture of Alaska’s natural assets—ranging from spectacular scenery to huge petroleum and coal deposits to habitat for a big share of the world’s migrating waterfowl. This report is a broad overview of the abundance, status, and value of Alaska’s primary natural assets. These assets include all aspects of nature that provide some benefits, …

Sustainability And Subsistence In Arctic Communities, Matthew Berman Apr 1998

Sustainability And Subsistence In Arctic Communities, Matthew Berman

ISER Reports

Thirty years ago, Chance (1966) wondered if hunting and fishing traditions of the people of the Arctic Slope of Alaska would survive the transition from nomadic to village life. The oil boom of the 1980s brought change to the region to an extent neither Chance nor Arctic dwellers themselves might have predicted (Knapp and Morehouse, 1991). Yet despite a vigorous wage economy fueled by two decades of oil revenues that yields a per-capita income exceeding the national average, subsistence traditions remain strong. Average per-capita harvest of subsistence foods in Alaska's North Slope Borough still exceeds a pound per day (Fuller …

A Systemic Plan To Improve The Writing Skills Of Students In A Secondary Computer Writing Laboratory, Cherie L. Hill Apr 1998

A Systemic Plan To Improve The Writing Skills Of Students In A Secondary Computer Writing Laboratory, Cherie L. Hill

Theses and Dissertations

This report describes the process used, for an urban high school with a student population of approximately 1,250 students, to investigate the existing writing programs offered to students. The preliminary research indicated a 10% decline in the number of students who pass the writing component of the New Jersey High School Proficiency Test.

Proposed preliminary investigation strategies include (a) interviews with writing teachers, regular English teachers, and teachers in other academic disciplines; (b) a review of documents such as district writing test results, courses of study, individual student writing reports, and grade point averages and English course grades; (c) observations …

Ecology Of A Reestablished Population Of Muskoxen In Northeastern Alaska, Patricia Claire Reynolds Apr 1998

Ecology Of A Reestablished Population Of Muskoxen In Northeastern Alaska, Patricia Claire Reynolds

Biological Sciences

The restoration of muskoxen (Ovibos moschatus) to regions of former range in northeastern Alaska presented an opportunity to study population dynamics, seasonal patterns, and dispersal in an expanding population of ungulates. Muskoxen were returned to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (Arctic NWR) in 1969-70 after an absence of $>$100 years. In 1982-97, I used annual censuses, counts by sex and age, radio and satellite telemetry, and data from Landsat-TM maps to determine rates of population growth, changes in production, survival, and group size over time, seasonal habitat use, activity patterns, and dispersal of mixed-sex groups. In 1982-86, mixed-sex groups …

Physiological Ecology Of The Arctic Ground Squirrel: Energy Metabolism, Torpor, And Behavioral Endocrinology, Charles Loren Buck Apr 1998

Physiological Ecology Of The Arctic Ground Squirrel: Energy Metabolism, Torpor, And Behavioral Endocrinology, Charles Loren Buck

Biological Sciences

I monitored seasonal changes in body condition and dates of immergence into and emergence from hibernation in a natural population of arctic ground squirrels (Sphermophilus parryii kennicottii) living on the North Slope of Alaska. Age and sex differences in changes of body condition and hibernation chronology are attributable to sex differences in energetic costs associated with preparation for reproduction and differences in reproductive status within males. While winters are long and environmental conditions faced by arctic ground squirrels in northern Alaska are extreme, the timing of hibernation did not differ appreciably from patterns observed in Sciurid populations living in temperate …
