Monitoring And Banding The Henslow's Sparrow In Garrett County, Maryland, Connie S. Skipper Dec 1998

Monitoring And Banding The Henslow's Sparrow In Garrett County, Maryland, Connie S. Skipper

Maryland Birdlife

The Henslow's Sparrow (Ammodramus henslowii) is a Maryland threatened species. It has gradually disappeared from Maryland except for the westernmost counties, where it uses the newly formed habitat of reclaimed strip mines. In 19891 discovered a small colony of these sparrows. I began to monitor that site, two other colonies, and to actively search for new colonies. From these observations I hypothesized that Henslow's Sparrows return to previous nesting sites, or nearby suitable sites, until vegetation becomes unfit for nesting purposes. To test this hypothesis I began a study with two objectives: (1) field visits to monitor known breeding populations …

A 4,000 Year Pollen Record Of Vegetation Changes, Sea Level Rise, And Hurricane Disturbance In Atchafalaya March Of Southern Louisiana, Xinyu Zhou

LSU Historical Dissertations and Theses

Sediment cores from the Atchafalaya Marsh in southern Louisiana were intensively studied by means of pollen and loss-on-ignition analyses to reconstruct the history of late-Holocene environmental changes and hurricane strikes in the area. The data indicate that the coring site was occupied by a fresh marsh about 4000 years ago. Afterwards, the fresh marsh was replaced by a brackish marsh in the following 400 years. The marsh became a salt marsh in response to sea level rise beginning 3250 yr BP. During 2800-1200 yr BP, the study site became an estuarine environment inundated by sea water as a result of …

The Molecular Basis Of Cancer, Frank Gorga Dec 1998

The Molecular Basis Of Cancer, Frank Gorga

Bridgewater Review

After cardiovascular diseases, cancer is the second leading cause of death in America. Since 1990 over half a million Americans have died each year of some form of cance1; and the number and rate is still increasing. In 1970 approximately 17 percent of all deaths were attributed to cancer, while by 1995 the figure had risen to 24 percent. In her chilling book on the meaning of illness in America, Illness as Metaphor, Susan Sontag described cancer as the sickness of the American 20th century. Learning about cancer has become more than a useful chore for those who suffer from …

Ecological Effects Of Major Storms On Coastal Watersheds And Coastal Waters: Hurricane Bob On Cape Cod, I. Valiela, P. Peckol, C. D'Avanzo, J. Kremer, D. Hersh, K. Foreman, K. Lajtha, B. Seely, W. R. Geyer, T. Isaji, R. Crawford Dec 1998

Ecological Effects Of Major Storms On Coastal Watersheds And Coastal Waters: Hurricane Bob On Cape Cod, I. Valiela, P. Peckol, C. D'Avanzo, J. Kremer, D. Hersh, K. Foreman, K. Lajtha, B. Seely, W. R. Geyer, T. Isaji, R. Crawford

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Hurricane Bob, a category 3 storm, made landfall on Cape Cod in August 1991, and its effects on watersheds and adjoining estuaries were detected in the ongoing studies being caried out as part of the Waquoit Bay Land Margin Ecosystems Research project. On land, Bob had only minor overall effects on forests; localized wind bursts did snap and break trees in small and widely scattered forest parcels. Wind stripped up to half the leaves of deciduous trees and many herbaceous plants on the watershed, and most remaining leaves were damaged by salt, so that by the end of Aug, Cape …

Powergraf: An Educational Software Package For Power Systems Analysis And Design, Tian Yane, Max Darwin Anderson Dec 1998

Powergraf: An Educational Software Package For Power Systems Analysis And Design, Tian Yane, Max Darwin Anderson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The purpose of PowerGraf is to present a graphical user interface (GUI) and a convenient tool for building one-line diagrams displaying data. The GUI is open and friendly for power systems design, analysis and control, because a picture provides a better illustration of cause-and-effect relationships than a tabular printout does. Basic elements such as buses, lines and transformers are given such that the power system topology is easily drawn with this tool, and the system parameters are entered on the picture and checked visually. This enables the power system topology and the system data to be shown on one picture …

Optimal Methods For Evoking Long-Term Depression (Ltd) In The Superior Cervical Ganglion Of The Rat And The Involvement Of Carbon Monoxide In Long-Term Potentiation (Ltp), Reem Saud Al-Hijailan Saud Al-Hijailan

Theses (Pre-2016)

Activity-dependent changes in synaptic efficacy of neurons seems to be important for the development of neuronal circuitry and for many forms of synaptic plasticity including memory and learning. Long-term depression (LTD) of synaptic transmission has been recognized in the brain as a mechanism for decreasing synaptic efficacy to modulate activity. In sympathetic ganglia, which is known to have a robust long-term potentiation (LTP), very little experimental work has been performed to explore the possibility of the presence of LTD. Preliminary experiments show that LTD can, in fact, be demonstrated in the superior cervical ganglia (SCG) of rat. Characterizing LTD in …

Three-Dimensional Calculation Of Contaminant Transport In Groundwater At A Dover Afb Site, Tariq O. Hashim Dec 1998

Three-Dimensional Calculation Of Contaminant Transport In Groundwater At A Dover Afb Site, Tariq O. Hashim

Theses and Dissertations

Macroscale rate-limited sorption modeling was tested using a production transport code, the GMS/FEMWATER ground-water modeling package. The code (Version 1.1 of FEMWATER. dated 1 August 1995) was applied to a 3D conceptual model developed from a field site at Dover AFB, DE. A simulation was performed of a 200 hour contaminant injection pulse followed by clean water flushing. A moment analysis performed on the resulting breakthrough curve validated code self-consistency. Another injection pulse simulation showed that retardation temporally delays the breakthrough peak. Transport simulations of pulsed clean water pumping of the test cell with a prescribed initial contaminant distribution demonstrated …

Genuflect, Gentlemen And Other Stories, Matt B. Mullins

Dissertations

Genuflect, Gentlemen is a novella-Iength work of fiction in which Dan Mooney, a recovering drug-addict and former rock star, has a religious awakening that inspires him to write a journal as an attempt to find meaning in his past. This journal, a soapbox for Dan’s newly realized philosophies, focuses primarily in his troublesome experiences as a student at an all-boys Catholic boarding high school; it is essentially Dan’s version of the “story” of those years just before his fame when music was replacing religion as the center of his spirituality. The ultimate conclusion Dan reaches through the reconsideration of that …

Factors Influencing Venom Expenditure During Defensive Bites By Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon Piscivorus) And Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Viridis, Crotalus Atrox), Shelton Scott Herbert Dec 1998

Factors Influencing Venom Expenditure During Defensive Bites By Cottonmouths (Agkistrodon Piscivorus) And Rattlesnakes (Crotalus Viridis, Crotalus Atrox), Shelton Scott Herbert

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although the quantity of venom expended when biting is an important aspect of the natural history of snakes, little is known regarding the quantities of venom expended during bites. Recent studies have shown that rattlesnakes appear capable of selectively allocating their venom reserves during predatory strikes, metering more venom into certain prey types and less into others. Despite much speculation, the quantities of venom expended during defensive bites are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to examine the factors that influence venom expenditure during defensive bites by cottonmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus), western rattlesnakes (Crotalus viridis) and western diamondbacks …

Narrative Analysis Of Sexual Etiquette In Teenage Magazines, Ana C. Garner, Helen M. Sterk, Shawn Adams Dec 1998

Narrative Analysis Of Sexual Etiquette In Teenage Magazines, Ana C. Garner, Helen M. Sterk, Shawn Adams

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

Expanding on existing research on women's magazines, this essay examines the sexual etiquette developed in advice columns in magazines popular among teenage women. Over a span of 20 years, the advice has changed very little. Serving the rhetorical function of field guides and training manuals, teen magazines limit women's sociality and sexuality within narrowly defined heterosexual norms and practices. The rhetoric of sexual etiquette encourages young women to be sex objects and teachers of interpersonal communication rather than lovers, friends, and partners. Young women are being taught to subordinate self for others and to be contained.

De-Emphasizing Grade-Level Identities: A Case Study Of Mathematics Instruction In An Intermediate Elementary Multiage Classroom, Kevin Oconnor Dec 1998

De-Emphasizing Grade-Level Identities: A Case Study Of Mathematics Instruction In An Intermediate Elementary Multiage Classroom, Kevin Oconnor

Dissertations

This is an interpretive study that investigates the nature of the issues, dilemmas, and successes of planning and implementing a mathematics program with minimal reference to grade-level designations in a multiage classroom setting of fourth—and fifth-grade students.

The study focused on how one teacher conceptualized, designed, and structured a mathematics curriculum. An analysis of over 60 hours of interviews conducted over six months revealed a teacher who integrated her knowledge of elementary mathematics with her knowledge and practice of teaching and learning theories, mathematical understanding, curriculum perspectives, and classroom management. This integration is explained through a conceptual framework of the …

Institutional Arrangements For Watershed Management: A Case Study Of Arenal, Costa Rica, December 1998, Bruce Aylward, Alvaro Fernández González Dec 1998

Institutional Arrangements For Watershed Management: A Case Study Of Arenal, Costa Rica, December 1998, Bruce Aylward, Alvaro Fernández González

Monteverde Institute: Economy and Resource Management

The CREED Costa Rica project conducted an exhaustive quantitative inquiry into the economic factors that determine land use in the Río Chiquito watershed of Lake Arenal, Costa Rica, and found that livestock production is likely to produce positive hydrological externalities. This paper integrates these results into an application of the Institutional Analysis and Development Framework that is informed by a participatory process conducted with watershed stakeholders. The paper identifies physical measures, institutional arrangements and incentive mechanisms to stimulate improved watershed management in Río Chiquito by expanding the analysis beyond just the internalisation of hydrological externalities, to consideration of the larger …
