Morphological Development Of 2 Warm-Season Grasses In The Nebraska Sandhills, J. R. Hendrickson, Lowell E. Moser, K. J. Moore, Steven S. Waller
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Morphological development of grasses has numerous implications to rangeland management including the timing and amount of herbivory. The objective of this study was to quantify the developmental morphology of prairie sandreed [Calamovilfa longifolia (Hook.) Scrihn.] and sand bluestem [Andropogon gerardii var. paucipilus (Nash) Fem.] tiller populations. Tier populations of these 2 grasses were studied for 2 years in the Nebraska Sandhills. Plant development was evaluated using a growth staging system which quantifies the development of tiller populations. A morphological growth index for each species was calculated from either the weighted average of tiller numbers reported as mean stage …

Managing Granite Outcrops. Revegetation On Farms Information Kit, David Bicknell, Department Of Conservation And Land Management (Calm), The Royal Society Of Western Australia
Natural resources published reports
In Western Australia, granite outcrops rise from the surrounding countryside like an extensive island chain, stretching from the high rainfall south-west to the arid interior. They are extremely rich in biodiversity, which can change dramatically from outcrop to outcrop. They may contain relics of unique plant and animal populations and are very significant for nature conservation.
Granite outcrops can also be a major source of groundwater recharge within catchments, especially where the surrounding fringe and woodland vegetation has been cleared.
What is granite?
*Granite is an igneous rock consisting of large crystals of quartz, feldspar and mica or hornblende.

Status Processes And Mental Ability Test Scores, Michael J. Lovaglia, Jeffrey W. Lucas, Jeffrey A. Houser, Shane R. Thye, Barry N. Markovsky
Status Processes And Mental Ability Test Scores, Michael J. Lovaglia, Jeffrey W. Lucas, Jeffrey A. Houser, Shane R. Thye, Barry N. Markovsky
Faculty Publications
The expected consequences of a score on an ability test can constrain individual performance. The authors predict that status processes, including status differences and the differences in rewards and costs that result, will produce differences in ability test scores between high-status and low-status individuals. In three controlled experi- ments, participants randomly assigned low status scored lower on a standard test of mental ability (the Raven Progressive Matrices) than did participants assigned high status. For both men and women, the difference in ability test score between low-status and high-status participants was about half a standard deviation. The results suggest the need …

Optimization Of Variable Area Transect Sampling Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Richard M. Engeman, Robert T. Sugihara
Optimization Of Variable Area Transect Sampling Using Monte Carlo Simulation, Richard M. Engeman, Robert T. Sugihara
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
An extensive simulation study was conducted to optimize the number, r, of population members to be encountered from each random starting point in variable area transect (VAT) sampling. The quality of estimation provided by the original calculation formula presented by K. R. Parker in 1979 was compared to another formula that was a Morisita analog intended to reduce bias when sampling aggregated populations. Monte Carlo simulations covered 64 combinations of four spatial patterns, four sample sizes, and four densities. Values of r from 3 through 10 were considered in each case. Relative root mean squared error was used as …

Prediction Of Leaf:Stem Ratio In Grasses Using Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy, Alexander J. Smart, Walter H. Schacht, Jeffrey F. Pedersen, Daniel J. Undersander, Lowell E. Moser
Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications
Leaf:stem ratio of grass stands is an important factor affecting diet selection, quality, and forage intake. Estimates of leaf:stem ratios commonly are based on a labor intensive process of hand separating leaf and stem fractions. Near infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used successfully to predict forage quality and botanical composition of vegetation samples. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of NIRS to predict leaf:stem ratios in big bluestem (Andropogon gerardii Vitman), switchgrass (Punicum virgatum L.), and smooth bromegrass (Bromus inermis Leyss.). A total of 72 hand-clipped samples of each species was taken …
Runoff And Erosion Following Field Application Of Beef Cattle Manure And Compost, John E. Gilley, Bahman Eghball
Runoff And Erosion Following Field Application Of Beef Cattle Manure And Compost, John E. Gilley, Bahman Eghball
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Manure or compost from beef cattle feedlots can be excellent sources of nutrients and organic matter when added to soils. This study was conducted to determine the effect of a single application of manure and compost on runoff and erosion under no-till and tillage conditions. Tillage consisted of a single disking operation up and down the slope on a Sharpsburg soil which was cropped to grain sorghum or wheat the previous season. Manure and compost were applied at rates required to meet corn fertility requirements. Additional experimental treatments included the application of inorganic fertilizer and an untreated check. The addition …
Review Of A Guide To The Nests, Eggs, And Nestlings Of North American Birds, Paul A. Johnsgard
Review Of A Guide To The Nests, Eggs, And Nestlings Of North American Birds, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
In 1978, during a visit to England, I purchased a copy of the first edition of this book, then called a field guide. It was written by Colin Harrison, published by Collins, and produced in standard field guide size. It never was effectively distributed in North America, which was unfortunate, because it was far better than the guide to bird nests by Hal Harrison in the well-known Peterson field guide series. Not only did it illustrate the eggs of about 550 species, in color and life size, but it also offered nestling paintings of nearly 150 species, plus numerous line …
Infectivity And Pathogenicity Of Baculovirus Penaei (Bp) In Cultured Larval And Postlarval Pacific White Shrimp, Penaeus Vannamei, Related To The Stage Of Viral Development, Hugh S. Hammer, Kenneth C. Stuck, Robin M. Overstreet
Infectivity And Pathogenicity Of Baculovirus Penaei (Bp) In Cultured Larval And Postlarval Pacific White Shrimp, Penaeus Vannamei, Related To The Stage Of Viral Development, Hugh S. Hammer, Kenneth C. Stuck, Robin M. Overstreet
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
The infectivity and pathogenicity of the penaeid shrimp virus, Baculovirus penaei (BP), is influenced by the stage of viral development. This study consisted of a preliminary experiment which showed that nonoccluded virus administered per os is infective, followed by two infectivity experiments. In the first phase of each infectivity experiment, mysis stage larvae of Penaeus vannamei were inoculated with BP and samples of infected tissue were collected at various times postinoculation (p.i.). These samples were then used to inoculate either mysis or postlarval stage P. vannamei in the second phase of each experiment. Viral inocula prepared from patently infected tissues …
Aboriginal Rights, Aboriginal Culture, And Protection, Gordon Christie
Aboriginal Rights, Aboriginal Culture, And Protection, Gordon Christie
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
There is a common perception that elements of mainstream society are disrespectful of Aboriginal culture. This article argues that developments in the law offer promise for the protection of Aboriginal "intellectual products," manifestations of Aboriginal culture reflecting their world-view. What Aboriginal peoples would like to see protected, however, are not so much words, pictures, or acts but rather the values, beliefs, and principles that give these meaning. Such, the author argues, are best protected by mechanisms internal to Aboriginal communities. Furthermore, the lack of such mechanisms would not justify the intrusion of Canadian law, but rather raises a call within …
