Quality Of Surface And Ground Water And Best Management Practices, Kenneth F. Steele
Quality Of Surface And Ground Water And Best Management Practices, Kenneth F. Steele
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
Arkansas is fortunate to have outstanding water resources, especially in terms of water quality. However, this is not to say that there are no problems. The Arkansas Water Resources Center (AWRC) in cooperation with other state and federal agencies is characterizing our water resources and providing data important to the wise use of these resources. One wise use of our water resources is to mitigate the impact of non-point sources of pollution on water quality through the use of best management practices. These proceedings address not only the characterization of the quality of ground and surface water but also address …

Biological Sciences
The presence of Listeria monocytogenes as a dairy food contaminant is a lethal threat to dairy industrialists; therefore, products tainted with L. monocytogenes must be quickly detected and removed from production. This fluorogenic PCR-based assay was developed to rapidly detect L. monocytogenes contamination in dairy samples before a final product is distributed. The detection method employed uses a PCR primer pair and a fluorogenic TaqMan probe which bind to a region of a virulence determinant gene specific to L. monocytogenes. As the DNA target is amplified, the 5′ nuclease activity of Taq DNA polymerase hydrolyzes the internal fluorogenic probe …
How Nature Shapes Childhood, Will Nixon
How Nature Shapes Childhood, Will Nixon
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
Pyle 's intuitions have been borne out by psychological study. In Place Attachment, a collection of academic essays, Kentucky State University professor of psychology Louise Chawla writes that formal studies of environmental activists have found that "most respondents attributed their commitment to a combination of two sources: many hours spent outdoors in a keenly remembered wild or semi-wild place in childhood or adolescence, and an adult who taught respect for nature." In public interviews, environmental leaders may ascribe their motivations to such weighty matters as saving the planet for future generations, but at bottom they may owe their drive to …
Hybrid Force-Feedback Control For Virtual Environments, Carol Chesney
Hybrid Force-Feedback Control For Virtual Environments, Carol Chesney
Link Foundation Modeling, Simulation and Training Fellowship Reports
The scope of this project is the design and implementation of a force-feedback device that utilizes brakes as well as motors for hybrid force control.. The device is a pen-sized device for planar point force-feedback. The design and software are implemented with consideration towards extending the force-feedback technology to three dimensions. The benefits of such a hybrid device include increased safety and realism. Larger forces can be reflected safely in the form of impenetrable constraints and instabilities can reduced or eliminated. The passive force component is the only way to accommodate the model of static friction. Delay in force measurement …

A Half-Century Of Winter Bird Surveys At Lincoln And Scottsbluff, Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard
Papers in Ornithology
Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has sponsored annual "Christmas bird counts" during the two-week period encompassing Christmas; and as a result, long-term data on winter bird populations have accumulated, especially for some locations. The first two such counts in Nebraska were made in 1909 and in 1912 in Lincoln. Beginning in 1947 and continuing to the present, an unbroken series of counts were made in Lincoln, usually by members of the Uni¬versity Place Bird Club, the Audubon Naturalist's Club, or the Wachiska chapter of the National Audubon Society. For Scottsbluff, an unbroken set of counts extends from 1949 to …

Moral Education And Outdoor Education, Coalition For Education In The Outdoors
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
Character development and moral education have always been integral parts of outdoor education. Currently, there's been a resurgence of interest in teaching children ethical values that build good character. Taproot Associate Editor Carol Skawinski interviewed one of the leading proponents of character education in the world: Dr. Thomas Lickona, Director of the Center for the 4th and 5th Rs (Respect and Responsibility), at the State University of New York, Cortland. Dr. Lickona is the author of Educating/or Character: How Our Schools Can Teach Respect and Responsibility and Raising Good Children. He discusses the urgent need for character education and the …

Education In Blossom, Marcia Eames-Sheavly
Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education
Gardening is an exciting, approachable way to teach kids about plants. A good gardening program doesn't need to be one more thing thrown on your plate; by integrating it into the curriculum, gardening can be easy and interdisciplinary. Interdisciplinary projects enhance young peoples' ability to make connections among isolated facts, and to find meaning among those arbitrary facts. A U.S. News and World Report article (January 1993) pointed out that some interdisciplinary pilot projects in New York and Los Angeles schools even improved school attendance, and decreased drop-out rates.

Evolution And Animal Welfare, Marian Stamp Dawkins
Assessment of Animal Welfare Collection
Animal welfare is a topic often thought to reside outside mainstream biology. The complexity of the methods used to assess welfare (such as health, physiology, immunological state, and behavior) require an understanding of a wide range of biological phenomena. Furthermore, the "welfare" of an animal provides a framework in which a diversity of its responses can be understood as fitness-enhancing mechanisms. Different methods for assessing animal welfare are discussed, with particular emphasis on the role of an animal's own choices and reinforcement mechanisms. No part of biology is as yet able to explain consciousness, but by confronting the possibility that …

Positive Behavioral Support: Strategies For Teachers, Michael B. Ruef, Cindy Higgins, Barbara J.C. Glaeser, Marianne Patnode
Graduate Studies in Education
Positive behavioral support (PBS) is a comprehensive, research-based proactive approach to behavioral support that endeavors to generate comprehensive change for students with challenging behavior. It involves identifying the purpose of challenging behavior, teaching appropriate alternative responses that serve the same purpose as the challenging behavior, consistently rewarding positive behaviors and minimizing the rewards for challenging behavior, and minimizing the physiological, environmental, and curricular elements that trigger challenging behavior. Proven PBS strategies include altering the classroom environment, increasing predictability and scheduling, increasing choice making, adapting the curriculum, appreciating positive behaviors, and teaching replacement skills. Relevant sources for those interested in implementing …

Whey Protein Edible Film Structures Determined By Atomic Force Microscope, L.E. Lent, L. S. Vanasupa, P. S. Tong
Dairy Science
Atomic force microscopy was used to study edible films produced from whey proteins. The films were imaged under ambient conditions with no special sample preparation. Low resolution imaging of areas from 10 μm to 150 μm on a side was performed in the contact mode. Higher resolution scans of 350 nm to 2,700 nm required use of the noncontact imaging mode. Features about the same size as the primary protein in whey, beta-lactoglobulin (7 nm), were identified in the film samples. Molecular aggregates in the range of 1 μm, reported in other studies using transmission electron microscopy of whey protein …

Directory Of Water Related Courses Offered At Colleges And Universities In Arkansas As Of November 1998, Kenneth F. Steele
Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports
This publication lists the water and water-related courses at several universities and colleges in Arkansas as reported during the Fall of 1 998. It is anticipated that users of this directory will extend beyond college students, and will include professionals seeking continuing education, and professors desiring to exchange Information on courses. This directory is not an "absolute" source of water and water-related courses because all of the higher learning Institutions In Arkansas are not listed, and, secondly, because the definition of "water and water-related" varies from institution to institution. None-the-less this directory provides a very valuable and impressive reference on …
