Mixing Qualitative And Quantitative Methods In Sports Fan Research, Ian Jones
Mixing Qualitative And Quantitative Methods In Sports Fan Research, Ian Jones
The Qualitative Report
Sports fandom consists of cognitive and affective, as well as behavioural components. Existing sports fan research utilises either strong qualitative, or more often, strong quantitative methodologies. The strengths and weaknesses of each approach are outlined, developing the argument that the use of a single methodology often fails to explore all of these components. The use of a mixed methods approach is suggested to counteract this weakness and to enhance research into the sports fan.
Fundamentally Flawed: Extension Administrative Practice Part 1, Thomas F. Patterson Jr
Fundamentally Flawed: Extension Administrative Practice Part 1, Thomas F. Patterson Jr
Journal of Extension
The first of a two-part series addressing Extension administration, this commentary challenges traditional Extension administrative practice, arguing that current techniques are fundamentally flawed and inappropriate in the modern work place. The classical school of management is defined, and its underlying foundational assumptions are examined and ultimately rejected.
Integrating Extension In Natural Resources Graduate Education, Stephen B. Jones, James C. Finley
Integrating Extension In Natural Resources Graduate Education, Stephen B. Jones, James C. Finley
Journal of Extension
Traditionally graduate education is defined by a research project and is often complemented by classroom or laboratory teaching experience. Too infrequently, graduate educators do not capitalize on promising opportunities associated with the university's Extension mission. The nature of informal education often draws Extension faculty to contentious and timely issues that are characterized by either technology voids or awareness/knowledge shortfalls. Using case studies the article characterizes the research that is appropriate, describes the type of graduate students who may be attracted to this kind of project, and suggests a strategy for partnering and grantsmanship.

The Integration Of Educational Technology Into The Elementary School Curriculum, Pamela J. Carlson
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of a one school year educational technology staff development program for kindergarten through grade six classroom teachers in the Grand Forks Public School District. The research population included teachers from all 13 elementary schools in the district.
The pre-post survey instrument was cooperatively designed by Grand Forks Public School District technology personnel and the researcher. The pre-post survey results measured (a) statistical changes in teacher comfort level, perceptions, and teacher and student technology experiences; (b) problems encountered and technology implementation; (c) preferred technology staff development; (d) influences on teaching; (e) …

Academic Freedom, Promotion, Reappointment, Tenure And The Administrative Use Of Student Evaluation Of Faculty (Sef): (Part Iv) Analysis And Implications Of Views From The Court In Relation To Academic Freedom, Standards, And Quality Instruction, Robert E. Haskell
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
In three previous papers, it was noted that while a controversial history of research on the reliability and validity of student evaluation of faculty (SEF) exists, it has not been typically viewed as an infringement on academic freedom. As a consequence, legal aspects of SEF are neither readily apparent, nor available. Moreover, SEF has not been generally seen as an infringement on, and detriment to, academic standards and quality instruction. The article is a review of SEF legal rulings analyzed in terms of their implications for academic freedom and quality of instruction in higher education.

An Assessment Of Relationships Between Actual And Perceived Caregiving Demand And Negative Impact Measures, Michele L. Mandrich
An Assessment Of Relationships Between Actual And Perceived Caregiving Demand And Negative Impact Measures, Michele L. Mandrich
Theses and Graduate Projects
Previous research has focused on the time spent and the tasks involved in caregiving and on care recipient characteristics in measuring caregiving demand and predicting negative impacts (Aneshensel, Pearlin, & Schuler, 1993; McKinlay, Crawford, & Tennstedt, 1995; Stull, Bowman, & Smerglia, 1994). However, the nature of the relationship between objectively measured caregiving demand and negative impacts for caregivers remains unclear. Researchers now note that assessing caregivers' perceptions of demand may be key in understanding negative impacts (Coverman, 1989; Litvin, Albert, Brody, & Hoffman, 1995; Loomis & Booth, 1995). This study assessed relationships between objective and subjective reports of caregiving demand …

The Use And Abuse Of Socrates In Present Day Teaching, Anthony G. Rud Jr.
The Use And Abuse Of Socrates In Present Day Teaching, Anthony G. Rud Jr.
Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
The Greek philosopher Socrates is used as an example of a master teacher in in many contexts, from elementary school discussions, to college philosophy classes, to law school. I examine a number of current uses of Socratic teaching, and expose inconsistencies among them. I analyze critically recent practitioners of Socratic teaching, such as Mortimer Adler, and I consider how the celebrated primary teacher Vivian Gussin Paley enacts the Socratic legacy in a novel way. I argue that the misuse, or abuse, of the Socratic legacy occurs chiefly when his teaching is interpreted narrowly as a pedagogical technique devoid of context …
